Before fertilizing blueberry bushes, check the soil pH. Blueberries need acidic soil, and an unsuitable pH can keep roots from accessing nutrients even when fertilizer is present. If a soil test indicates fertilizer is needed, choose an ammonium-form nitrogen source and follow recommendations for your region and the plant’s age.
Test soil pH before choosing a fertilizer
Blueberries grow best in acidic soil, but recommendations vary somewhat by region and source: the University of Minnesota Extension gives a range of pH 4.0–5.5, Oregon State University Extension gives 4.5–5.5, and Penn State Extension describes 4.5–5.0 as optimal. Use your local extension service’s guidance for your soil and climate rather than treating one range as universal.
A home pH kit can provide a screening result; a soil-testing laboratory can offer a more complete recommendation. If pH is too high, fertilizer alone is unlikely to fix the underlying problem. Minnesota Extension cautions that “Blueberry plants in soil with a pH above 5.5 will struggle to absorb the nutrients they need from the soil.” Minnesota Extension’s home-garden guide explains its recommendations, while Oregon State’s soil-acidification guide is specifically for west of the Cascades in Oregon and Washington.
Choose a nitrogen source suited to blueberries
Blueberries favor ammonium-form nitrogen. The right product depends on the soil test, the plant’s needs, and whether the soil needs to become more acidic.

- Ammonium sulfate (21-0-0): An ammonium-form nitrogen source that also acidifies soil. Use it only when appropriate to the soil test and local guidance. Oregon State warns against fertilizers containing ammonium sulfate when soil pH is below 5.0 in its regional nutrient guidance.
- Urea (46-0-0): Another ammonium-form nitrogen option identified by extension guidance. Depending on local recommendations, it may be preferable when further acidification is not wanted.
- Acid-loving plant fertilizer: Some products labeled for azaleas or rhododendrons may be suitable. Check the fertilizer analysis and label; formulations vary, and the product should fit the soil-test recommendation.
For details on nitrogen sources and regional cautions, see Oregon State’s nutrient-management guidance for blueberries and Penn State’s blueberry planting guidance.
Correct low acidity with a soil amendment, not extra fertilizer
If soil pH needs to be lowered, elemental sulfur is a common amendment. Apply it according to a soil test and the product label. It takes months to change pH and may take longer, so it is not a quick fix. Do not apply extra nitrogen just to acidify soil: that can exceed the plant’s nitrogen needs. Minnesota Extension discusses pH management and sulfur in its blueberry home-garden guidance.

- This fertilizer is blended especially for acid lovers such as rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, hydrangeas, evergreens, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, potatoes and other plants that need a low pH
- To encourage lush flowers and fruit, apply Acid Mix in early spring for vegetative growth and again when blooms appear.
- Fall Applications can help promote root growth and boost resistance to extreme winter temperatures
- Slow-Release Formula: The slow-release nature ensures a steady supply of nutrients, promoting long-lasting plant health and reducing the need for frequent applications.
- Supports Soil pH Adjustment: Helps lower soil pH to create an ideal acidic environment for your plants, enhancing nutrient uptake and overall plant health.
Do not rely on coffee grounds to lower pH. Minnesota Extension says, “Do not use coffee grounds as a pH amendment.” Their acidity is not consistent, and the amount needed would be large and unreliable.
Apply fertilizer at the right time and place
Timing depends on your region and whether guidance is intended for home gardens or commercial production. Follow local extension recommendations and the fertilizer label. Oregon State’s Oregon Coast guidance splits granular nitrogen into three applications: late April, late May, and late June. It advises spreading fertilizer over an area about the size of the bush’s spread, not against the canes or crown.

Those dates are regional, not a universal calendar. Oregon State’s Oregon Coast guidance generally advises against granular fertilizer after July 1, while its home-garden guide says to avoid granular products after August 1 in most regions. Late feeding can encourage growth vulnerable to frost and may reduce the next year’s fruit-bud set. Ask your local extension service for the appropriate schedule, especially if the plants are newly established.

Pale or yellow leaves do not automatically mean a blueberry needs more fertilizer. High pH can make iron and other nutrients unavailable to the plant. Check soil pH first and address the cause rather than applying fertilizer blindly.

A foliar iron spray may temporarily green new leaves, but it will not resolve unsuitable soil pH or improve long-term plant health if the underlying soil problem remains. Alkaline irrigation water can also cause soil pH to rise over time; repeated testing may help identify that trend.
