To fertilize with fish emulsion, dilute the concentrate at the rate on its own label and apply it around plants as directed. There is no universal mix: extension examples range from 1–2 tablespoons per gallon for container vegetables to 6 tablespoons per gallon in a Colorado State University Extension table. The right rate and timing depend on the product, crop and growing setup.
How to apply fish emulsion
- Check the product label. Read its dilution rate, application method, interval and any crop-specific directions. Oregon State University Extension likewise advises gardeners to use the label for dilution and application rates.
- Agitate the concentrate if directed. UConn Extension advises agitating fish fertilizer before mixing.
- Measure and dilute accurately. Add the label-directed amount to the stated volume of water. Do not substitute an extension example for the instructions on your bottle.
- Apply around the plants as directed. UF/IFAS describes mixing fish emulsion with water and sprinkling it around plants. Use any different method only if the product label permits it.
- Make only what you can use promptly. Diluted solution can spoil and develop unpleasant odors during storage, according to UConn Extension. Follow the label’s storage directions.
How much fish emulsion to use
Published rates are examples for particular contexts, not interchangeable recipes. UNH Extension gives a dilute feeding example of 1–2 tablespoons per gallon for container vegetables once plants have grown for three to four weeks. Colorado State University Extension lists 6 tablespoons per gallon in an organic-fertilizer table. The sources do not establish either rate as right for every product or plant.
| Source and context | Published example | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| UNH Extension, container vegetables | 1–2 tablespoons per gallon of water; weekly dilute feeding after three to four weeks of plant growth | A context-specific example, not a default for other crops or products. |
| Colorado State University Extension, organic-fertilizer table | 6 tablespoons per gallon of water | A separate table recommendation; do not combine it with the UNH rate. |
| UF/IFAS Extension, general guidance | Mix with water and apply around plants every two to three weeks or as needed | A frequency example, not a substitute for the product label. |
Because these examples differ, start with the label for your specific concentrate and intended plants. Do not increase the dose or apply more often just because a plant looks weak; excess fertilizer can harm plants.
How often to apply it
Follow the interval on the product label. Published guidance varies: UF/IFAS describes application every two to three weeks or as needed, while UNH’s container-vegetable example uses weekly dilute feeding after three to four weeks of growth. These are different recommendations for different contexts, not a single schedule. Consider the crop and whether it is growing in a container or in the ground.

What the N-P-K numbers mean
Check the guaranteed nutrient analysis on the product label before deciding whether fish emulsion suits your plants. N-P-K figures give the product’s nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium analysis; products do not all have the same ratio. UF/IFAS reports 5-1-1 as a typical analysis and describes fish emulsion as nitrogen-forward and relatively low in phosphorus. Colorado State University Extension and the 2026 Southeastern U.S. Vegetable Crop Handbook list 5-2-2 as typical. These reported typical analyses are not guarantees for an individual bottle.
The 2026 Southeastern U.S. Vegetable Crop Handbook also lists a one-to-four-month release range for fish emulsion. That handbook figure is not a universal feeding interval: use the specific product directions and the needs of the crop.

Prevent overapplication
More fertilizer is not necessarily better. NC State Extension notes that fertilizer amounts depend on nutrient content, and that natural nutrient sources can still be overapplied and damage plants. A soil nutrient analysis can help determine whether additional nutrients are needed and inform fertilizer choices. Do not treat fish emulsion as a complete fertilizer for every crop.
Plan for odor and handling
Fish emulsion may have a strong or unpleasant smell; Colorado State University Extension notes that some products have a foul odor. UConn Extension advises agitating fish fertilizer before mixing and warns that diluted solution can spoil and become unpleasant-smelling if stored. Mix an amount you can use promptly, and follow the bottle’s handling and storage instructions.

What fish emulsion does not establish
A product’s nutrient analysis and label directions are the practical basis for using it; they do not establish that every plant needs it or that it will suit every crop. Illinois Extension notes that some commonly repeated claims about fish emulsion are unverified. Do not assume that foliar feeding or soaking seeds in fish emulsion guarantees better results, or that one brand’s directions apply to another.
