How to Fertilize Pear Trees: Timing, Soil Tests, and How Much to Use

Use a soil test and last year’s shoot growth to decide whether a pear tree needs fertilizer. Spring is common, but timing and rates vary by region and tree condition.

Fertilize a pear tree only when its soil test and growth show a need. Pears can become overly vigorous when given excess nitrogen, and vigorous growth is associated with greater fire blight susceptibility. Start by checking soil and measuring last season’s shoot growth, then follow recommendations for your region and the fertilizer label.

What to check before fertilizing a pear tree

Get a soil test

Contact your local Cooperative Extension office for soil-testing instructions. A test can show whether pH needs adjustment and whether phosphorus or potassium are needed. Virginia Cooperative Extension says later-year pear fertilization usually focuses on nitrogen; add phosphorus or potassium when test results indicate a need, rather than applying them routinely.

Record the tree’s age and estimate how much its shoots grew last year. These details help distinguish a tree that may benefit from nitrogen from one that is already growing vigorously.

Use shoot growth as a nitrogen check

Extension recommendations use different growth thresholds, so treat them as regional guidance, not one universal rule. University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension advises against nitrogen for pear trees older than three years that grew more than 12 inches in a year. Utah State University Extension says not to apply nitrogen when shoot growth exceeds 24 inches. Follow the recommendation for your area rather than averaging these thresholds.

When to fertilize

Spring is a common timing when a tree needs fertilizer, but the right date depends on local climate and the specific recommendation. Virginia Cooperative Extension’s guidance places application about a month before bloom. UNH recommends spring application for its low-growth case. Utah State recommends early spring, before leaves form, for underperforming young trees and advises against fertilizing after mid-July. UNH guidance and Utah State guidance are regional examples; use your local Extension office for a calendar suited to your location.

How much fertilizer to use

There is no single rate for every pear tree. Rates depend on location, tree age, soil test, growth, and fertilizer formulation. The following figures are examples from different extension publications; they are not interchangeable prescriptions.

Source and conditions Published recommendation
Virginia Cooperative Extension, 2020; spring example About 0.10 pounds of actual nitrogen per tree. Its equivalent examples are 1.0 pound of 10-10-10, 2.0 pounds of 5-10-10, or 1.25 pounds of 8-8-8 per tree.
University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension, 2019; pear with less than six inches of growth in the previous year One pound of calcium nitrate in spring.
University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension, 2017; young pear trees Up to one pound of general garden fertilizer such as 10-10-10.
Utah State University Extension, 2018 Do not apply nitrogen when shoot growth is more than 24 inches.

These examples reflect recommendations for their stated conditions and regions. Do not use a rate simply because a product has the named analysis: confirm the need with a soil test and local guidance, and follow the product label.

How to apply fertilizer

  1. Confirm the need and rate. Use the soil-test results, tree age, and prior-season shoot growth with your local Extension recommendation and the fertilizer label.
  2. Measure the product carefully. If a local recommendation gives actual nitrogen, check the fertilizer analysis and calculate or select a product rate only as directed by that guidance.
  3. Spread it across the root zone. Virginia Cooperative Extension describes even application under the drip line for its recommendation. Apply according to the local instructions and label, not against the trunk.

Why excess fertilizer can hurt

More fertilizer does not necessarily mean more fruit. Virginia Cooperative Extension notes that pears use less nitrogen than apples and that vigorous pear trees are more susceptible to fire blight. Avoid adding nitrogen to a tree that is already growing strongly unless local advice and evidence support it.

Choosing the right local recommendation

Published rates differ because they address different regions, tree ages, growth patterns, and nutrient needs. For example, the Virginia and New Hampshire examples specify different conditions and formulations, while Utah’s guidance sets a shoot-growth threshold. Use a locally appropriate recommendation, not a blend of figures from multiple states.
