To estimate cement for concrete, first calculate the volume of concrete your project needs, then multiply that volume by the cement or total cementitious-material content in the project’s approved mix design. The volume alone cannot tell you how much cement to buy: proportions vary with the required strength, exposure conditions, materials, and mix design.
Concrete volume is not cement quantity
Cement is a binding ingredient in concrete, not another name for the finished material. Concrete combines cement and water with fine and coarse aggregates; some mixes also include supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), fibers, or chemical admixtures. The Federal Highway Administration’s mix-proportioning training identifies water, cement, SCMs, aggregates, air content, and admixtures as mixture constituents: FHWA, Concrete Mix Proportioning.

The American Cement Association gives typical composition ranges of 7% to 15% cement, 60% to 75% aggregate, and 14% to 21% water, and says entrained air in many mixes may add up to 8%. Its FAQ separately says cement typically makes up 10% to 15% of a concrete mix by volume. These are broad typical figures—not project instructions or a universal cement-to-concrete ratio. See the American Cement Association’s Applications of Cement and its Cement & Concrete FAQ.
Step 1: Calculate the concrete volume
Measure the dimensions of each part of the pour and calculate its finished concrete volume. Use one consistent unit system throughout. For a rectangular slab, multiply length by width by thickness after converting all three measurements to the same unit. For other shapes, use the appropriate geometry or divide the work into simpler shapes and add their volumes.

This gives the amount of concrete the project requires; it does not yet give the cement quantity. The required dimensions and shape come from the project, while ingredient proportions come from the mix design.
Step 2: Identify how the concrete will be supplied
| Supply approach | What to estimate and obtain |
|---|---|
| Ready-mixed concrete | Estimate finished concrete volume and give the supplier the project’s required mix or specification. The supplier’s mix design determines ingredient proportions. |
| Site-batched concrete | Estimate finished concrete volume, then use the specified mix design’s cement or cementitious-material content per unit volume to calculate ingredient quantities. |
Step 3: Calculate cement for a site-batched mix
When the mix design gives cementitious content as a mass per unit volume, use:
Required cementitious mass = mix-design cementitious mass per unit volume × required concrete volume

- QUICK SETTING: Sets in 20 minutes
- VERSATILE: Indoor, and outdoor use
- EASY TO USE: Ready to use! Just add water, mix, and use!
- MULTIPLE SURFACES: Handrails, bolts, poles, fixtures, and more
- PRACTICAL SIZE: 10 pound bag saves your back while providing plenty of cover
Keep units consistent. For example, if the mix design states a mass for each cubic metre, use the required volume in cubic metres; if it uses another unit, convert the project volume accordingly. Use the actual mix-design value rather than substituting a general percentage or recipe.

Separate portland cement from SCMs
If the mix design lists portland cement and SCMs separately, keep those quantities separate. “Total cementitious material” can include both; it is not necessarily the mass of portland cement to buy. The FHWA training describes mix proportioning in terms of these distinct constituents: FHWA, Concrete Mix Proportioning.
Use a project-specific mix, not a universal ratio
Concrete proportions are selected to achieve the required fresh and hardened properties. The American Cement Association explains that water, cement, and aggregate proportions vary, and admixtures may be used for different applications. It also notes that water-cement ratio is an important factor in paste strength and that mixture proportioning must balance workability with strength and durability. A properly designed mixture is workable when fresh and durable and strong when hardened, according to the Association’s Applications of Cement page.

For work where strength, durability, exposure, or structural performance matters, follow the project specifications and applicable local requirements, and obtain the specified mixture from the supplier or responsible designer. The American Cement Association’s Design and Control of Concrete Mixtures, 17th edition reference page describes the book’s coverage of concrete specification, design, and proportioning.

A calculator can help with arithmetic, but its output is only useful if its assumptions match the project. Check the specified standard and project requirements, the units and batch volume, whether it reports portland cement separately from SCMs, and whether its assumptions for water, aggregates, air, and admixtures are visible. A third-party mixture-proportioning calculator page advises users to check project specifications and the adopted ACI 318 edition before entering limits; it should not be treated as a substitute for an approved project mix or qualified technical advice.
