To engrave a photo, prepare a sharp, high-contrast image, convert it to grayscale or a dithered dot pattern, and test the settings on the same material before running the final piece. A laser cannot reproduce continuous photographic tones directly: its software represents them through power changes or patterns of burned dots. The right conversion, resolution, and laser settings depend on the machine and material.
1. Choose a suitable material
For a first project, start with a flat, smooth, light-colored plywood sheet. xTool describes 1–6 mm plywood as a practical example and notes that resin content, grain, knots, color, and tone affect how the image burns. Sand rough wood with 400–600 grit to even the surface, and flatten warped stock before engraving. See xTool’s wood photo engraving guide.
Wood is accessible and creates contrast through burning, but other materials—including slate, acrylic, glass, leather, stone, and aluminum—can also be used. Each reacts differently to heat and may require different image treatment, focus, speed, and power. Do not assume a setting or image conversion that works on one material will work on another. xTool’s material processing guide and Epilog’s photo engraving guidance discuss material-specific considerations.
2. Prepare the photo
Choose an image with useful tonal detail
Start with a sharp image that has a range of visible light-to-dark shading. Portraits and pets often benefit from removing a distracting background. Large areas of flat color or simple backgrounds tend to engrave poorly, according to Epilog Laser.

Crop, size, and adjust
Crop the image to the shape and physical dimensions of the workpiece. Adjust brightness, contrast, and sharpness conservatively: extreme edits can erase subtle facial features or turn midtones into dark patches. For scanned prints, Epilog recommends scanning in color at about 200–300 DPI. xTool recommends at least 300 DPI in its photo preparation guide to help avoid pixelation. Treat these as starting recommendations, not guarantees; the useful detail also depends on the machine, material, and final engraving size.

- Grayscale: the software maps tones to varying laser power. It can work well when the machine and material can reproduce meaningful power variation.
- Dithering: the software converts tones into a pattern of black and white dots. It can suit a machine or surface where dot patterns produce a clearer image than continuous power changes.
There is no universally best option. Test the available choices in your machine software on a small piece of the same material. xTool lists options including Stucki, Newsprint, Jarvis, Floyd, Bayer, Atkinson, and Sierra, alongside grayscale, in its material processing guidance and wood workflow.
3. Set up the engraving job
Focus and resolution
Secure the material flat and set focus as specified by the laser manufacturer. Engraving resolution may be expressed as DPI or LPI/line interval. Higher resolution can reveal more detail, but it increases processing time and can make a mark overly dense if it exceeds what the photo or material can resolve. Choose a setting your machine supports, then compare small tests rather than assuming the highest available resolution is best.

Scan direction and image orientation
Wood grain can affect how a photo appears. One practical xTool starting approach is to orient the grain vertically and scan horizontally. Results still depend on the particular wood and machine, so treat this as a testable starting point rather than a fixed rule; see xTool’s wood workflow.
Speed and power
Use the machine’s material profile as a starting point: faster motion generally produces a lighter mark, while more power generally produces a darker or deeper one. Focus, resolution, scan angle, line interval, and number of passes also affect the result. No single preset applies to every laser and wood.

xTool gives one example for untreated wood of a first pass at 6000 mm/min and 40% power, followed by a second pass at a different angle and power. That is an example from its specific workflow, not a universal recommendation for your machine. Always make a small test on matching material before engraving the finished piece. See the full xTool example.

Wood is flammable, and smoke and heat can cause charring or blur fine details. Use the machine’s smoke extraction and appropriate ventilation, and use air assist if your system supports it. Stay alert to fire risk while the laser is operating; follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions. xTool covers these precautions in its material processing guide.

If the surface is too dark or has scorch marks, light sanding may remove the top layer. xTool’s finishing guidance also suggests a light clear spray to help hold loose ash in place; use a finish only if it is compatible with your material and intended use.
