Yes—you can make a timed kibble feeder from water pipe by using the pipe as a vertical hopper and chute, then metering food with a motor-driven rotor. The documented DIY Oracle Hackster design, published July 25, 2017, uses a 45-degree joiner, rubber fins, acrylic discs, a geared DC motor and a NodeMCU for phone-triggered or scheduled feeding.
It is a useful build pattern, not a validated appliance. Pipe dimensions must be matched to your kibble and bowl, portions must be measured by repeated tests, food-contact materials must be suitable and cleanable, and the original remote version depends on continuous internet access. Treat its cloud service as historical documentation and verify that any current firmware and server dependencies still work.
How the water-pipe feeder works
The reservoir is a length of vertical pipe. Food falls toward a 45-degree joiner and reaches a dispensing chamber. Inside that chamber, a motor turns rubber fins between acrylic discs; each rotation captures and releases a quantity of kibble into the bowl. Pipe holders secure the hopper to a support panel, while the motor and electronics sit in a separate acrylic enclosure.
The documented connected controller is a NodeMCU. A phone can set a timer or request a feed, with a public server relaying the command to the controller. Because that arrangement expects an internet connection continuously, it should not be treated as a stand-alone offline timer without redesigning the control system.

Choose the pipe before cutting anything
Diameter and kibble fit
The project documents 30 mm, 60 mm and 90 mm diameter options. A narrow pipe uses less space but may bridge more easily with large or irregular kibble; a larger pipe accepts more food but can deliver a deeper, heavier load to the rotor. Measure the longest dimension of the actual food and test a short section before committing to a diameter.
Length and capacity
Pipe length can be extended to increase reservoir capacity. There is no universal portion chart in the project, so do not infer daily servings from diameter or length. The only dependable setting is the mass or volume delivered by your finished feeder with your own kibble.

Bowl height and outlet position
Set the support-panel height so the 45-degree outlet discharges cleanly into the bowl without a steep drop that scatters food. Leave enough clearance to remove the bowl and inspect the outlet. Avoid a layout that leaves a low pocket where damp food can remain.

Build the mechanical dispenser
- Prepare the hopper. Cut the selected pipe to length, deburr every edge and check that kibble can travel through it without catching. Do not leave cutting dust or shavings in the food path.
- Mount the vertical section. Attach two holders to the support panel so the pipe cannot rotate or pull away when full. Position the lower end over the 45-degree joiner.
- Fit the joiner and outlet. Dry-assemble the lower section first. Confirm that the outlet points at the bowl and that the dispensing chamber can be removed without dismantling the whole frame.
- Make the rotor. Assemble the rubber fins between the acrylic discs as shown by the project design. Check that the fins do not scrape the housing and that there is no exposed fastener or edge where food can lodge.
- Couple the motor. Use the 6 mm coupling to join the rotor shaft to the geared motor. Rotate the assembly by hand before applying power; binding at this stage will become a jam under load.
- Separate food and electronics. Put the motor, relay, NodeMCU, adapter connection and wiring in the acrylic enclosure or another sealed, serviceable enclosure. The enclosure should prevent spilled food and cleaning moisture from reaching electrical parts while still allowing inspection.
Wire and configure the controller
Electrical checks
Use the 1N4007 diode across the motor circuit as a flyback path where appropriate to your relay and wiring arrangement. Confirm relay contact ratings, polarity, grounding and the motor’s startup current. The documented parts list combines a 12 V motor with a 9 V, 1 A adapter, so measure or recalculate the requirements rather than copying that pairing blindly.

NodeMCU and remote scheduling
Install the project firmware only after checking which server endpoint, libraries and app path are still available. The July 2017 documentation describes a public server, but it does not guarantee that service remains online. Configure the feeder on a reliable Wi-Fi network, then test a manual command before creating schedules.
Test behavior without the network
Disconnect Wi-Fi and power-cycle the feeder before relying on it. Determine whether a missed command is ignored, queued or retried by the current firmware. If the feeder cannot make a local decision, arrange a manual feeding fallback for outages.

Calibrate a portion with your own kibble
Motor speed, fin geometry, kibble shape and hopper fill level all affect the amount released. No cited source provides a validated accuracy result for this exact feeder, so calibration is part of the build rather than an optional finishing step.
- Fill the hopper to a marked, repeatable level with the food your pet actually eats.
- Trigger one dispense cycle and collect everything from the outlet.
- Weigh the output with a kitchen scale, or measure it by volume if mass measurement is unavailable; mass is easier to reproduce.
- Repeat the cycle many times, recording every result rather than relying on one sample.
- Check the first, middle and last cycles of a partly emptied hopper. A feeder that changes output as the head pressure changes needs a different schedule or mechanical adjustment.
- Record the tested cycle count needed for the desired meal, then repeat the test after cleaning and after changing kibble brands or sizes.
Mark the tested hopper fill line and keep the calibration record with the feeder. Do not use the result for a different food until that food has been tested separately.

Food-contact safety and cleaning
FDA guidance says food-contact substances must be authorized for their intended use. For animal-food equipment, 21 CFR §507.22 requires equipment to be adequately cleanable, made of nontoxic materials and maintained to prevent contamination. “Water pipe” or “plumbing grade” alone is not proof that a product is approved for contact with pet food.
- Select pipe, acrylic, rubber and any sealant with manufacturer documentation covering the intended contact and cleaning conditions.
- Keep PVC cement, primer, lubricants, solder flux and uncured adhesives out of the food path unless their documentation specifically permits that use and the stated cure conditions are met.
- Prefer smooth, reachable surfaces. Avoid exposed threads, sharp edges, ledges and dead legs where damp kibble can sit.
- Design the rotor, joiner and outlet to come apart for inspection. Empty and dry the reservoir between cleaning cycles.
- Wash and dry the bowl and outlet area, then check for residue before refilling. FDA also advises that pet food be safe to eat, produced under sanitary conditions and free of harmful substances.
Jams, bridging and outage planning
A related PVC auger guide warns that augers can jam and recommends testing with real pet food while adjusting motor speed and auger geometry. That supports a testing requirement, not a measured failure rate for this fin-based Hackster design.
What to inspect during testing
- Bridge formation above the rotor when the hopper is partly full.
- Fins dragging on the housing or acrylic discs rubbing out of alignment.
- Kibble fragments accumulating in the 45-degree joiner or outlet.
- Different output when the hopper is full versus nearly empty.
- Motor stalling, relay chatter or a controller reset when the rotor starts.
Run repeated cycles with the actual food, clear and inspect the mechanism after a jam, and change only one mechanical or software variable at a time so you can identify the cause. Keep a manually portioned feeding method available: the documented remote design cannot receive scheduled data when its continuous internet connection is unavailable.

When this project is a good fit
Build it if you enjoy mechanical prototyping, can verify material suitability and electrical ratings, and are willing to calibrate and monitor it. It is less suitable as the sole food source for a pet when an internet outage, jam or unverified food-contact material could go unnoticed. A supervised trial with a manual backup is the prudent way to put the feeder into service.
