The pattern is also called jeweling or perlage. It decorates a surface; it does not hide scratches or other defects.
What engine turning means
Here, engine turning means a field of repeated, overlapping circular abrasive marks. The terms “jeweling” and “perlage” are also used for this finish. “Guilloché” can instead refer to geometric curved-line patterns made with a single-point tool, so it is not always an exact synonym. CRATEX describes the distinction.
What you need
- A drill press secured to a stable surface.
- An engine-turning abrasive stick that fits securely in the chuck. CRATEX lists stick diameters from 3/16 inch to 1 inch; the diameter determines the approximate circle size. Choose based on the look you want, then refine the spacing on scrap.
- For aluminum, CRATEX recommends medium grit, which it says cuts enough to avoid ghosting from the previous swirl. Treat that as the manufacturer’s guidance, not a universal specification for every alloy or abrasive.
- A ruler or measuring tool and pencil or tape for laying out the grid. Avoid scribing the visible area or using permanent marker.
- Scrap aluminum, preferably the same material as the finished panel, for practice.
- Eye protection; use a mask if particles may be thrown into the air. Watch for sharp sheet edges, and follow the machine and abrasive manufacturers’ safety directions.
How to engine turn aluminum with a drill press
1. Prepare the panel
Start with a clean, flat surface. Smooth visible imperfections with suitable fine abrasives and remove residue before decorating. The circular marks will not reliably conceal defects, and uneven preparation can remain apparent through the pattern.
2. Measure and mark the layout
Measure the abrasive stick’s diameter, then mark an even grid using pencil or tape. The grid determines where each circle will land, so take time to make rows and columns consistent. Keep marks off the visible work area if they could remain in the finished surface.

3. Set up the press and stick
Cut a short section of abrasive stick and secure it in the chuck, leaving only a short length exposed to limit flex. Make sure the drill press itself is firmly mounted. CRATEX and Eastwood both give 900–1400 rpm as a starting range and advise beginning slower. These are source-specific recommendations, not a universal setting for every machine, abrasive, or job; follow the makers’ instructions for your setup.
4. Test on scrap
Use scrap to settle on the speed, spacing, pressure, and contact time before touching the finished panel. Keep pressure light and dwell time consistent. Too much pressure can mushroom the abrasive stick and make the circles uneven. Adjust the overlap and appearance on the test piece until you can repeat the result.

- Versatile Applications - The Flywheel Turner tool is suitable for various repair scenarios, including automotive transmission replacement, engine maintenance, outboard motor servicing, torque converter and flexplate replacement, as well as timing chain and cover replacement. It can also be used to position the flywheel for inspection and installation
- Ergonomic Design - The user-friendly design ensures a secure grip on the flywheel without slipping, making it especially valuable for tasks like clutch replacements or engine rebuilds. Its adjustable feature accommodates various flywheel sizes, while the rubber-coated handle enhances grip and comfort during use. Additionally, the compact size allows for easy storage and transport, contributing to its overall ease of use
- Adjusting Engine Position - This tool aids in accurately positioning the engine, which is crucial for various tasks such as timing adjustments, checking cylinder pressure, or disassembling specific engine components. Proper alignment ensures optimal performance and reduces the risk of errors during repairs
- Rotating the Flywheel or Flexplate - The Flywheel Turner tool is specifically designed to engage with the teeth of the flywheel or flexplate, allowing you to manually rotate the component to the desired position. This facilitates precise installation or thorough inspection
- Assisting with Bolt Tightening or Loosening - The Flywheel Turner securely holds the flywheel or flexplate in place, preventing any unwanted rotation. This stability simplifies the process of removing or tightening bolts, making it significantly easier and safer for you to perform your work
5. Work methodically across the grid
Place the stick at each mark, bring it into contact, hold for the chosen dwell, then move to the next point. A roughly half-diameter overlap is a common layout, but it is only one option; different spacing changes the pattern. Keep the rows aligned and avoid changing pressure or dwell as you work.
One practitioner example reproduced in CRATEX’s tutorial describes using a rubberized abrasive stick in a Bridgeport drill chuck, touching down to the surface, letting it dwell, then stepping over about .400 inch. That figure belongs to that practitioner’s setup; it is not a general spacing rule.

6. Clean and protect the finish
Remove abrasive residue after finishing. CRATEX and Eastwood suggest applying a clear coat to improve abrasion resistance, but neither specifies a coating chemistry suitable for every aluminum alloy or application. Choose a coating compatible with the part’s material and use, and follow its manufacturer’s preparation and application directions.

| Setup | How spacing is controlled | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drill press | The operator positions the work using the marked grid. | A straightforward manual approach for a one-off panel or a beginner learning the finish. | Regularity depends on careful layout and consistent hand movement. |
| Milling machine | An X-Y table can help track movement between marks. | Work where table movement makes measured spacing easier to manage. | Requires access to and setup of a mill. |
| CNC | Programmed movement can provide precise layout and repeatability. | Work where a highly consistent repeated pattern is the priority. | Requires CNC setup and programming. |
These are qualitative differences described by the manufacturers, not results of a controlled comparison. The sources do not establish measured differences in time, cost, or finish quality. Other approaches mentioned include sanding discs, brushes, hardwood dowels, abrasive bits, and hand rotary tools; their wear, contact consistency, and setup can differ, so test any alternative on scrap.
