How to Drill Evenly Spaced Shelf-Support Holes

Choose a layout to match your pins and cabinet, then use a clamped, indexed guide and a depth stop to drill consistent shelf-support holes.

For evenly spaced shelf-support holes, choose the shelf-pin diameter and layout first, then use a shelf-pin jig or indexed guide to repeat the hole positions. Set both cabinet sides from the same reference edge, clamp the panel and jig securely, and control drilling depth with a stop collar. Hole diameter, spacing, setback, and depth depend on your pins, jig, and cabinet plan—there is no single layout that suits every project.

Choose the pins and layout before drilling

Confirm the pin diameter and how the pin will support the shelf edge. Then decide the vertical spacing and the distance of each row from the cabinet’s front or back. Treat the jig’s dimensions as specifications for that jig, not as universal cabinet dimensions.

For example, Kreg’s 1/4-inch Shelf Pin Jig, model KMA3225, uses 1-1/4-inch (32 mm) increments and includes a 1/4-inch brad-point bit. Those measurements may not match another pin system or your cabinet plan.

Check the model’s edge setback as well as its hole spacing. Kreg’s Medicine Cabinet plan notes that first- and second-generation versions of its jig have different setback spacing. Do not copy a layout without confirming which jig generation and reference edge it applies to.

Choose a guide that fits the job

Method Useful when Check before drilling
Commercial shelf-pin jig You need to drill repeated rows with a guided bit and indexing system. Pin-hole diameter, spacing, edge setback, depth-stop setup, and usable row length. The Kreg KMA3225 has hardened-steel guides and can connect to a second jig for longer rows, according to its product listing.
Shop-made indexed jig You have suitable tools and want a fixture made for your chosen spacing. Guide holes are perpendicular, the reference edge is stable, and the index pin fits the holes. WOOD Magazine’s 2018 design uses 1/4-inch guide holes on 2-inch centers; that describes the specific jig, not a universal spacing standard. See WOOD Magazine’s drill-guide jig.
Shelf standard as a spacing guide You have a drill press and want to index repeated positions along a fence. The fence is secure and the index pin registers consistently. This is a drill-press spacing method, not a purpose-built shelf-pin jig. See WOOD Magazine’s shelf-standard guide.

A commercial jig’s specific features are not proof that its dimensions suit your project. Compare the pin fit, setback, spacing, indexing method, and length of the row you need.

Drill the row in a controlled sequence

  1. Set a common datum. Choose a consistent bottom or top reference on both cabinet sides. Mark the row setback from the same front or back edge on each panel, and check the jig’s edge offsets.
  2. Test uncertain dimensions on scrap. Use scrap of the same thickness and material to check that the pin fits and the hole is deep enough without breaking through. There is no universal depth specification in the cited instructions; choose depth for your pin and panel.
  3. Clamp the workpiece and jig. Secure the panel to a stable surface and clamp the jig in position. Kreg’s KMA3225 instructions warn: “When drilling, always ensure that the workpiece is clamped securely. It is dangerous to hold the workpiece in place by hand.” If anything shifts, stop and secure it again.
  4. Set the drill depth. Fit the correct bit and set its stop collar or drill stop for the tested depth. The Kreg instructions direct users to stop when the collar contacts the drill guide. The appropriate depth depends on the pin and panel.
  5. Drill and index the jig. Drill through the guide. For a longer row, place the manufacturer’s indexing pin through an existing hole to reposition the jig, then clamp it again before drilling. Kreg cautions that its extension component has no drill guide; do not use the extension itself as a guide for the bit.
  6. Repeat from the same reference. Keep the jig aligned to the chosen edge and use the same indexing procedure at each position. If the panel or jig moves, stop rather than continuing with a shifted setup.

Keep opposing rows aligned and inspect the fit

Both cabinet sides need matching vertical positions so each shelf rests level. Reference the two rows from the same datum and use the jig’s alignment features. For corner rows, Kreg’s Safety Guidelines recommend using a spacer to help align the jig.

VASTHOME 9 Holes Shelf Pin Jig and Hinge Jig 2-in-1, 1/4 Inch & 5mm
  • Thicker Jig for Straighter Drilling: The VASTHOME 9 Holes Shelf Pin Jig addresses a common problem with thin shelf hole jigs: limited drill-bit support can allow the bit to tilt. We increased the jig thickness to provide steadier guidance and help keep shelf-pin holes straight and aligned
  • Upgraded Brad-Point Bits for Cleaner Holes: Standard twist bits may wander when starting a hole or leave rough, uneven edges. We upgraded both included bits to sharp brad-point wood drill bits that center quickly and produce cleaner, more consistent 1/4 Inch (6mm) and 5mm shelf-pin holes
  • Efficient 9-Hole Layout with Two Sizes: This shelf pin drilling jig has two dedicated guide rows for 1/4 Inch (6mm) and 5mm shelf-pin holes. Drill up to 9 evenly aligned holes per setup to reduce repeated measuring and repositioning when building adjustable shelves
  • 32mm 9-Hole Layout with Two Sizes: This shelf pin drilling jig features dedicated guide rows with standard 32mm center-to-center spacing for 1/4 Inch (6mm) and 5mm shelf-pin holes. Drill up to 9 evenly aligned holes per setup to reduce repeated measuring and repositioning
  • Shelf-Pin and Hinge Positioning in One Jig: In addition to straight shelf-pin drill guides, this cabinet hole jig includes a 35mm concealed-hinge positioning template, providing a convenient solution for adjustable shelving and cabinet-door projects

Before assembly or loading, compare opposing hole positions, seat the pins, and check that a shelf sits level. Do not treat hole spacing or a successful fit check as a load rating: the cited sources do not establish a shelf capacity for these methods.

Work safely and account for the limits

  • Clamp the workpiece; do not hold it by hand while drilling.
  • Stop if the panel or jig shifts, and resecure the setup before continuing.
  • Use a depth stop to avoid drilling through the panel. A bit can become hot after repeated use, according to the Kreg instructions.
  • Confirm the jig’s actual drill-guide location before drilling; an extension component without a guide is not a substitute.

The cited sources provide product specifications and jig-making methods, but not independent comparative accuracy tests, hole-tolerance figures, or load ratings. Choose dimensions for your own pin system and cabinet, and avoid assuming a particular jig guarantees a quantified level of precision or shelf strength.
