How to Draw a Circle in Revit: Model, Detail, and Sketch Workflows

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Revit, the Circle tool appears after you start a compatible drawing or sketch command. For a general 3D circle, choose Model Line, select Circle on the contextual Draw panel, click the center, and set the radius. Use Detail Line instead when the circle belongs only in one drafting or detail view.

Fastest method: draw a 3D model circle

Use a model line when the circle represents geometry in the building model, construction layout, or reference information that may need to exist beyond one view.

  1. Open a suitable plan, elevation, section, 3D, or other view.
  2. Start Architecture > Model > Model Line. The exact ribbon location can vary slightly by Revit release and workspace.
  3. Check the active work plane or Placement Plane. Select the required level or reference plane, or choose Pick to select a face or reference plane.
  4. On the contextual Modify | Place Lines tab, choose Draw > Circle.
  5. Click the circle’s center.
  6. Move the cursor outward and click to define the radius, or enter an exact radius.
  7. Press Esc to stop placing circles, then press it again if necessary to exit the command.

Revit creates true circular geometry defined by a center point and radius; it does not approximate the shape with a collection of straight line segments. See Autodesk’s Circle documentation.

How to draw a circle with an exact radius

Revit’s circle workflow is radius-based. If you know the diameter instead, divide it by two before entering the value.

Method 1: enter the radius before placing the circle

  1. Activate the Circle tool.
  2. On the Options Bar, select Radius.
  3. Enter the required radius.
  4. Click once to place the center.

With a preset radius, Revit can place the circle with one center-point click. The available options can vary by the active tool and Revit version.

Method 2: use the temporary dimension

  1. Click the center point.
  2. Move the cursor outward to establish the approximate radius.
  3. Type the required value.
  4. Press Enter.

Enter units that your project accepts. For example, you might type 5' or 1500 mm; do not assume Revit always expects inches, millimetres, or feet. The displayed and interpreted units follow the project’s unit settings.

Example: for a desired diameter of 1000 mm, enter a radius of 500 mm.

  6. Press Esc to finish.

A detail line is drawn in the view’s sketch plane and exists only in the view where it was created. Autodesk describes detail lines in its Detail Lines documentation.

Model line or detail line?

What you need Use Result
A circle in 3D space or on a specific work plane Model Line > Circle A work-plane-based model line
A drafting mark in one view Detail Line > Circle A view-specific 2D line
A circular wall, floor, roof, opening, or extrusion Start that element’s tool, then choose Circle Actual model geometry governed by the element’s properties
Reusable annotation or family graphics Use the appropriate family line or sketch tool Family geometry or view-specific family graphics

The practical rule is simple: use a model line for model-related geometry, a detail line for view-only documentation, and the actual building-element tool when the circle must behave as part of the BIM model.

A model line is not guaranteed to appear in every view. Its visibility can depend on the work plane, view direction, category visibility, discipline, detail level, phase, design option, and other view settings. Autodesk’s overview of model and detail lines explains the fundamental distinction.

This creates a circular wall with wall thickness, height, location-line behaviour, joins, and other wall properties. It is not merely a visible circular line.

How to use a circle in a floor, roof, opening, or extrusion sketch

Many Revit elements use a similar sketch-based workflow:

  1. Start the relevant element command, such as a floor, roof, opening, extrusion, or void.
  2. Enter sketch or edit mode when prompted.
  3. Choose Circle from the contextual Draw panel.
  4. Place the center and radius.
  5. Check that the sketch satisfies the active tool’s boundary rules.
  6. Choose Finish Edit Mode.

The circle can serve as an outer boundary, an opening, an interior loop, or a profile for solid or void geometry. A circle is geometrically closed, but the active element may impose additional requirements. Gaps, self-intersections, unsuitable interior loops, or unsupported geometry can prevent the sketch from completing. Autodesk’s current sketching guidance lists Circle among the available drawing options for supported sketches.

Why the circle is not visible in another view

It is a detail line

This is the most common explanation. Detail lines are view-specific by design. Redraw the circle as a model line if it needs to exist in model space, or add the detail line separately in each required view.

It is on the wrong work plane

A model circle may have been placed on an unexpected level, reference plane, or face. Start Model Line again and review Placement Plane. Choose the correct level or plane, or use Pick to select the required face. Autodesk’s work-plane guidance applies to current releases, although labels may vary slightly by version.

It is edge-on

A circle drawn horizontally on a plan-level work plane may look like a line, or seem absent, in an elevation. A circle drawn on a vertical plane may behave the opposite way. Check the view orientation and the plane on which the circle was created.

View settings are hiding it

Check whether the relevant category is hidden, whether the view’s discipline or detail level affects line visibility, and whether phase, design option, crop region, or other view controls exclude the element.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is family-specific geometry

Symbolic lines in a family can be limited to selected family views or orientations. Confirm whether the family circle is model geometry, symbolic geometry, or reference geometry.

Editing the radius and showing the center

Select the circle and edit its temporary dimension when one is available. Sketch boundaries may require you to re-enter sketch mode. Depending on the element category, you may instead use constraints or instance controls. There is no single universal Radius property exposed identically for model lines, detail lines, wall sketches, floor boundaries, and family geometry. If the circle does not provide a convenient editable control, deleting and redrawing it with the required radius may be the clearest solution.

For applicable model-line circles and arcs, the instance properties can include Center mark visible. Select the circle and inspect its properties. This setting should not be assumed to exist for every circle type, sketch boundary, detail line, or annotation. See Autodesk’s center-mark documentation.

What to do when the Circle button is missing

The Circle command is contextual; it is not necessarily visible when no drawing command is active. If it is unavailable:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Exit the current command and start Model Line, Detail Line, or the appropriate model-element tool.
  • Enter the required sketch mode before looking for the contextual Draw panel.
  • Confirm that the active element supports circular geometry. Some tools expose only a restricted set of sketch options.
  • Check that the contextual ribbon is active and that you are editing the intended geometry.

If the tool still does not appear, the active command may not support circles. Autodesk’s 2026 sketch documentation confirms that Circle is available for supported walls, lines, and other applicable sketches.

Circle alternatives

  • Arc: If you need less than a full 360-degree curve, use an arc method such as Start-End-Radius Arc, Center-Ends Arc, Tangent End Arc, or Fillet Arc. See Autodesk’s arc tools.
  • Reference geometry: Use a reference plane or reference line when the shape is construction geometry intended to control or align other elements.
  • Family: Use model lines, symbolic lines, or the family’s sketch tools when the circle belongs to a reusable loadable or in-place family.
  • Circular model element: Use the wall, floor, roof, opening, extrusion, void, or other appropriate tool when the circle must participate in BIM behaviour, constraints, hosting, quantities, or element properties.

Import or trace CAD geometry only when the circle originates in an external DWG/DXF or survey workflow. For a simple circle, Revit’s native Circle command is usually more direct.

Final decision guide

Use Model Line > Circle for a work-plane-based 3D circle, Detail Line > Circle for view-only drafting, and the relevant element’s sketch mode for a circular wall, floor, roof, opening, extrusion, or family form. If the circle seems to disappear, check whether it is view-specific, on the wrong work plane, or edge-on before redrawing it.
