Yes—Siri can open, close, and report the status of a garage door, but only when the door is connected through a compatible Apple Home (HomeKit) controller or another supported Siri integration. A Wi-Fi connection or myQ logo alone does not make an opener Siri-compatible.
For most homeowners, the practical solution is a retrofit smart garage controller. It connects to the existing opener, uses a position sensor to determine whether the door is open or closed, and exposes the door in the Apple Home app. Replacing the entire opener is usually unnecessary.

What Siri Can Do
After a compatible controller has been added to Apple Home, you can use Siri to control or check the door from an iPhone, Apple Watch, HomePod, or supported in-car interface. Try commands such as:

Garage doors are security-sensitive accessories, so Siri may request confirmation or apply other restrictions depending on the device, location, language, and Apple software version. Voice control should not be treated as automatically safer than a remote or keypad.
What You Need Before Siri Will Work
- A garage-door controller that supports Apple Home/HomeKit, or a manufacturer-supported Siri Shortcut.
- An opener that is electrically and digitally compatible with the controller.
- A correctly installed door-position sensor.
- Wi-Fi or another supported network connection in the garage.
- The manufacturer’s app, if required for setup.
- The Apple Home app and Siri enabled on your Apple device.
- A HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV configured as a home hub for reliable control while you are away from home. Apple describes the home-hub requirement for remote Home control in its Apple Home and Siri guidance.
The position sensor is essential. The controller needs it to distinguish an open door from a closed one. Without dependable sensing, the app might send an opening or closing signal without being able to confirm the actual state.
Wi-Fi, myQ, HomeKit, and Siri Shortcuts Are Not the Same
Wi-Fi-enabled opener
Wi-Fi generally means the opener can communicate with its manufacturer’s app. It does not automatically mean the opener appears in Apple Home or responds to Siri.

myQ
myQ is Chamberlain Group’s connected-garage system. A myQ opener may work well in the myQ app, but Chamberlain’s current integration documentation lists direct Apple HomeKit and Siri voice control as unsupported. An opener being myQ-compatible therefore does not, by itself, make it Siri-compatible.
Chamberlain’s older or separate Home Bridge hardware has been associated with Apple Home support, but availability, compatibility, and support should be checked for the exact product before relying on it.

Apple Home/HomeKit
A HomeKit-compatible controller appears as a garage-door accessory in Apple Home. This is the cleanest route to Siri status queries, scenes, and Apple’s remote-home features.
Siri Shortcuts
Some manufacturers expose app actions through Apple Shortcuts without providing a native HomeKit accessory. That can be useful, but it is not equivalent to Apple Home support. Shortcut behavior, permissions, cloud access, and automation reliability depend on the manufacturer’s app and Apple’s current restrictions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Usually not. Retrofit controllers commonly connect to the existing opener’s wall-button terminals and add their own door sensor. However, compatibility is model-specific. Some openers use proprietary digital wall controls, require an adapter, or reject particular controller generations.
Before buying or wiring anything, record:
- Opener brand and exact model number.
- Learn-button color, where the manufacturer uses it to identify a protocol.
- Whether the opener uses ordinary low-voltage wall-button wiring or a proprietary system.
- Whether the photo-eye safety sensors are present and working.
- Wi-Fi strength at the garage.
- Number of doors to control.
- Whether a wired or wireless position sensor better suits the installation.
Run the controller manufacturer’s compatibility checker. For example, Meross provides a garage-opener compatibility tool. Tailwind’s product information says its iQ3 2.1 does not support Chamberlain/LiftMaster openers with a white learn button, identified as Security+ 3.0. iSmartGate says some Chamberlain, LiftMaster, and Craftsman Security+ 2.0 installations may require a Switch Adaptor.
How to Add Siri Control to an Existing Door
- Identify the opener. Find the brand and model before selecting a controller.
- Check compatibility. Confirm the protocol, learn-button type, adapter requirements, number of doors, and regional availability.
- Install the controller. Disconnect power before changing wiring, and follow the controller’s instructions for the opener terminals. Do not bypass photo-eye sensors or other safety circuits.
- Install the position sensor. Mount and orient it exactly as specified, then verify that the manufacturer’s app reports open and closed states correctly.
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Some products require 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi during setup; check the chosen model rather than assuming this is universal.
- Add the controller to its manufacturer app. Test the wall button, original remote, and app independently.
- Add it to Apple Home. Use the supplied HomeKit code or the manufacturer’s “Add to Apple Home” workflow.
- Assign a unique name and room. Avoid names that could be confused with other accessories.
- Configure a home hub. Add a HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV if you need remote access while away.
- Test Siri and status reporting. Operate the door manually and confirm that Apple Home updates from open to closed and back again.
If the door, sensor, or opener behaves unexpectedly, stop using voice automation until the physical installation and status reporting have been corrected. A qualified garage-door technician is the safer choice when terminals, wiring, or the opener’s operation are unclear.

Retrofit Options to Consider
| Situation | Direction to investigate | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest-cost HomeKit-oriented retrofit | Meross MSG100/MSG100HK/MSG200HK | Check the exact opener; some models require an additional accessory. Meross lists the MSG100 at $49.99 and the MSG200HK at a $67.99 sale price on its store pages checked for this article; prices can change. |
| Vehicle detection or richer automation | Tailwind iQ3 | Tailwind lists iQ3 2.0 from $89.99 and iQ3 2.1 at $99.99. Confirm the correct generation and opener compatibility, including the white-learn-button limitation. |
| Several garage doors or gates | iSmartGate PRO or a multi-door Tailwind setup | iSmartGate describes LITE as a one-door product and PRO as supporting up to three doors. Verify sensors, wiring, and any required adapter. |
| Manufacturer app is sufficient | Keep a working myQ installation | Current myQ documentation does not support direct Apple HomeKit or Siri control. |
Meross
Meross markets several garage controllers with Apple Home and Siri support and advertises no subscription fee for the relevant products. Its lower hardware cost can suit a compatible single-door installation, but the compatibility check is essential.
Tailwind
Tailwind’s iQ3 line is aimed at users who value vehicle-aware arrival and departure automation, multi-platform support, or multiple doors. It costs more and requires careful model selection. Automatic arrival-based opening deserves particular caution: it can create a security risk if a vehicle, phone, sensor, or location rule behaves unexpectedly.
iSmartGate
iSmartGate markets LITE and PRO controllers with Apple Home and Siri support, wired two-wire connections, and support for garage doors and gates. The manufacturer’s current information says IFTTT integration is scheduled to end after October 1, 2025, so do not choose it for that integration without checking its current status. No dependable current iSmartGate retail price is included here.

“Siri can’t find the garage”
- Open Apple Home and confirm that the garage tile exists.
- Tap the tile to test it manually.
- Rename the accessory to a short, unique name.
- Try “Is [accessory name] open?”
- Check the manufacturer app and the controller’s Wi-Fi status.
- Check that the Home hub is online and that Siri is using the correct Apple Home and account.
- Only re-add the accessory after locating the required HomeKit code and recording the existing configuration.
The manufacturer app works, but Siri does not
This commonly means the controller is connected to the manufacturer’s service but has not been added to Apple Home, or that the model supports only a manufacturer app or Shortcut. App control and HomeKit control are separate layers.
Siri reports the wrong state
Inspect the sensor for incorrect orientation, poor alignment, detachment, or incomplete door travel. Recalibrate it if the manufacturer provides that procedure. Do not rely on Siri’s status until you have opened and closed the door manually and confirmed that Apple Home updates correctly.

Remote control fails while away
Test local control first. Then check the home hub, internet connection, controller Wi-Fi, Apple Home permissions, and household account configuration. Remote Apple Home/Siri access requires a functioning home hub, as explained in Apple’s support documentation.
The opener works with myQ but not Apple Home
Under current myQ documentation, this is expected for direct integration. myQ app compatibility and Apple Home compatibility are different questions. A separate compatible HomeKit controller may be required.
Safety and Security Considerations
A voice command can open a large access point to the home. Consider who can use your Apple devices, whether shared household permissions are appropriate, whether a HomePod can reliably distinguish household voices for your needs, and whether commands could be overheard.
- Protect iPhones and Apple Watches with device passcodes.
- Use clear household permissions and remove former residents or guests.
- Prefer status checks, reminders, and controlled closing scenes over unattended opening automations.
- Be cautious with vehicle-based arrival rules and automatic opening.
- Enable notifications or reminders when the door remains open, if supported.
- Never disable photo-eye sensors or modify opener safety circuits to force compatibility.
Which Approach Should You Choose?
- Already have HomeKit-compatible hardware: Add it to Apple Home, configure a home hub if needed, and test the sensor before using Siri.
- Have a myQ-only opener but require Siri: Investigate a separate, compatible HomeKit retrofit controller rather than assuming myQ can be added directly to Apple Home.
- Want the lowest hardware cost: Investigate Meross after passing its compatibility check.
- Want vehicle automation: Investigate Tailwind, while accepting its higher cost and additional safety considerations.
- Have multiple doors or gates: Investigate iSmartGate PRO or a compatible multi-door Tailwind configuration.
- Do not need Apple Home: The manufacturer’s app may be simpler and may avoid the cost of another controller.
The important distinction is that Siri compatibility belongs to the complete system—the opener, controller, sensor, network, Apple Home pairing, and home hub—not merely to the garage-door brand.
