Decorative wood banding is made by assembling small wood segments into a patterned log, then slicing the log into thin strips for inlay. With a planned segment layout, careful glue-up and a suitable saw setup, the strips can add contrast to furniture or create a transition between veneered plywood and solid-stock edging.

Plan the pattern, materials and run

Choose the pattern and wood before cutting. Strongly contrasting species make the banding stand out; using one species with different grain orientations creates a quieter effect. For square and triangular patterns, consider adding outer banding to reinforce the fragile end-grain-to-end-grain joints. Thin black-dyed veneer can serve as that border and conceal glue lines.

Work out the segment dimensions from the design. For squares, make each segment’s length equal to its thickness. For 45-degree triangles, make the length twice the thickness. Measure the full run and divide it by the segment length to find the number of whole segments. If the measurement does not divide evenly, either distribute the remainder among the segments or adjust the layout or run to achieve the corner treatment you want. Use separate logs for runs that require different segment lengths.

Make the log longer than the finished run so you do not have to splice banding midway. WOOD Magazine’s 2020 feature recommends making it three to four inches longer than the longest run. It also gives an illustrative yield: a 5-inch by 2-foot log produces about 40 feet of 1/16-inch inlay; actual yield depends on the log, saw kerf and trimming.

Cut consistent segments

Choose stock with straight, consistent grain. Keep blanks about five inches wide or less; wider segments are more prone to cupping and twisting. Cut extra pieces to allow for defects, and keep them in sequence so the grain pattern remains continuous during assembly.

The method described in WOOD Magazine’s 2020 banding feature uses a crosscut sled with a scrapwood zero-clearance insert, auxiliary fence, stop and an 80-tooth blade. Make a test cut and measure it before producing the full set. Set the stop narrower than the blank so an offcut cannot become trapped between the stop and blade. Use a setup appropriate to your saw and follow its safety guidance.

Assemble a straight, stable log

  1. Set a temporary reference fence and stretch masking tape adhesive-side up across the assembly bed. Align the first segment square to the reference, then place the remaining pieces in order.

  2. Dry-fit the segments and check alignment periodically. A small error at the start can compound along the log, so correct gaps or drift before applying glue.

  3. After glue-up, clean the face of the log before adding any outer veneer. The feature describes removing the tape after the glue has set for 20–30 minutes, then reclamping for another 24 hours. These are that article’s instructions, not universal adhesive cure times; follow the glue maker’s directions for your product and conditions.

  4. Flatten and clean the log face with a hand plane, cabinet scraper or sanding block as needed before adding the outer veneer.

Choose a pattern and account for its joints

Squares and checkerboards

Keep square segments in sequence to preserve the intended grain direction. To make a checkerboard, rip the assembled log in half, shift one half by one segment length, and glue the halves back together.

Triangles, diamonds and zigzags

Triangle tips are vulnerable to tear-out; leaving a very small flat at each tip can help. Plan to cut about 50% more segments than the final design requires to allow for defects. Because these patterns create end-grain joints, careful clamping and an outer veneer are especially useful. For a zigzag, offset flipped halves by half a segment length. For a diamond variation, nest square segments between layers of triangles.

Herringbone

Herringbone joins face grain to face grain, so the outer reinforcing band is optional. Use blanks with straight, consistent edge grain. In the described setup, the stop is moved to the other side of the blade to reduce the likelihood of kickback; adapt the arrangement to your machine and safe-work practices.

Slice the log into inlay

For the final rip, the 2020 feature describes using a thin-kerf hollow-ground planer blade, a zero-clearance insert and an auxiliary fence that ends just short of the blade center. That clearance lets the strip move without binding. Use a sacrificial push shoe, and set the saw and workholding according to the equipment maker’s instructions; this source-specific setup is not a universal safety recommendation.

The feature cuts strips about 1/16 inch thick. The first 1/4–1/2 inch of the log may need to be removed to get beyond uneven segment ends and glue squeeze-out. Check the log for defects and keep hands clear of the blade throughout the cut.

Match the design to the project

Before making the full log, consider how the pattern will look at corners, what grain direction should carry through the run, and whether the joints need reinforcement. A simple square pattern is comparatively direct to lay out; triangles and checkerboards require more deliberate offsetting and careful assembly. Herringbone’s face-grain joints make an outer border less essential. For a banding run that crosses corners, test the planned segment count and corner alignment with a dry layout first.
