To measure an office chair for fit, record the chair’s usable seat-height range, seat depth, seat width, armrest position and relevant backrest adjustments, then compare them with the seated user’s measurements and the desk’s height and clearance. Overall chair height or depth alone does not tell you whether the seat will fit a person or work at a particular desk.
What to measure before comparing office chairs
A tape measure is enough for a practical comparison. Record the measurements for the person, workstation and chair separately; they answer different questions. ISO 24496:2021 provides standardized definitions for chair dimensions, while personal measurements help determine whether a chair can be adjusted to suit the user.
- Person: lower-leg height, supported seat depth, hip width and seated elbow height.
- Workstation: desk working height, underside clearance, usable width and depth, and room to pull the chair in and out.
- Chair: seat-height range, usable seat depth or its adjustment range, seat width, armrest adjustment and relevant backrest or lumbar adjustment.

How to measure an office chair step by step
1. Measure the seated user
Have the user sit in a firm chair in their normal working posture. Measure lower-leg height, the seat depth that allows the back to be supported, hip width and seated elbow height. Keep posture consistent, and repeat any measurement that changes materially when the user settles into position.

2. Measure the desk and available space
Measure the desk’s working height and the clearance beneath it, along with the usable width and depth of the work area. Check the space required to pull the chair in and out. If the user needs to sit close to the desk, note whether the armrests can fit beneath it.
3. Measure the chair’s usable dimensions
Record the chair’s seat-height adjustment range, usable seat depth and any seat-depth adjustment, seat width, armrest adjustments, and backrest or lumbar adjustments relevant to the user. Check the manufacturer’s measurement convention: a product’s overall dimensions and its usable seat dimensions are not interchangeable.

4. Compare adjustments with the person and desk
Check whether the seat-height range allows the user to sit with feet supported; a footrest or footring may be needed if the chair cannot be lowered enough. Compare seat depth with the user’s seated leg dimensions while keeping the back supported. Check seat width against hip width and freedom of movement, and compare armrest position with elbow height and desk clearance. Consider body size, shape and work tasks rather than relying on overall chair height.
5. Try the chair in the actual setup
Where possible, test the chair at the intended desk and over an extended period. OSHA’s purchasing guide recommends that users try a chair for comfort and fit before purchase. A checklist can help narrow options, but it cannot guarantee a suitable fit for every body type.

How standard chair measurements are defined
ISO 24496:2021, Office chairs — Methods for the determination of dimensions — Office furniture, was developed to establish a common method for measuring office chairs. Its definitions help when comparing product specifications, but the standard’s formal method uses a chair-measuring device; a household tape-measure check is a practical fit assessment, not an ISO measurement.
- Seat height: the vertical distance from the loaded seat to the floor, measured at the front of the seat.
- Seat depth: the distance from the backrest line to the front of the seat, measured parallel to the specified buttocks pad.
- Seat-surface width: the smallest seat-surface dimension within the standard’s marked width zone.
These standardized dimensions describe the chair. They do not replace measuring the user or the workstation. Confirm how each manufacturer defines its listed measurements before comparing models.

Are there standard office chair dimensions?
There is no single universally correct chair size established by these sources. OSHA’s purchasing checklist lists a suggested adjustable seat-height range of 15 to 22 inches, a seat-pan length of 15 to 17 inches, and a seat-pan width of at least 18 inches. These are checklist suggestions, not universal ergonomic requirements or a guarantee of fit; OSHA notes that its criteria may not accommodate all individual body types and recommends trying the chair. Compare multiple chairs with a fit checklist
For each model, compare its usable measurements and adjustments against the same person and workstation measurements:
- Seat-height range against the user’s lower-leg measurement and ability to keep feet supported.
- Usable seat depth and its adjustment against the user’s seated leg dimensions and supported back position.
- Seat width against hip width and room to move comfortably.
- Armrest position and width against seated elbow height and desk clearance.
- Backrest or lumbar adjustment against the user’s torso and work tasks.
- Overall width and base clearance against room access and space beneath or around the desk.
Keep a simple record of these figures for each chair. A chair’s headline size or overall dimensions may not reveal whether its adjustment range suits the user or whether it fits beneath the desk.
