Design the pavilion around the views and the sun, not around a standard roof shape. Map where people will sit or stand, what they need to see, when they will use the space, and how sunlight and wind move across the site. Then use the roof to intercept overhead sun while keeping the sides open; add carefully placed screens or fins only where low-angle sun causes a problem.
Start with the site, the view and the hours of use
A pavilion that feels open from one seat can block the view from another. Before choosing a roof or drawing posts, identify the people who will use the structure and the sight lines that matter to them. Views from a seated position may pass beneath a roof edge or between supports, while a standing view may be interrupted by a beam, screen or planting. Mark both, and include the principal routes through the space.

Next, note when the pavilion is likely to be occupied. A space used mainly at midday has a different shading problem from one used for breakfast or late-afternoon events. Record the seasons of use as well as the hours: the sun’s height and direction change through the year, and nearby buildings, terrain and trees can cast moving shadows. Look at the site at relevant times if possible; a single midday observation will not show every glare or shade condition.

Make a simple site plan that includes the pavilion footprint, view corridors, adjacent obstructions, existing shade, and likely locations for seating or standing. Add the sun’s direction and height for the relevant seasons and hours, using a site-specific solar study where the project warrants it. Also assess prevailing breezes and exposure. The New Zealand Ministry for the Environment’s 3: Guidance on Passive Solar Design recommends examining solar access, overshadowing and windflow before settling on a passive-design strategy. Its advice comes from a New Zealand context, so its orientation examples should not be copied as universal compass rules.

For a real project, interpret compass direction in light of the site’s latitude and hemisphere, the intended season of use, surrounding obstructions and local wind conditions. The useful question is not simply “Which direction should the pavilion face?” It is “From which angles does unwanted sun reach the occupied area, and which views and breezes must remain available?”
Use the roof as the main shade plane
When the sides need to stay visually open, put the first effort into overhead shade. A canopy, overhang or open slatted plane can block higher-angle sun without adding an opaque wall at eye level. Its footprint and position should be tested against the actual hours of use: a roof that looks generous in plan may leave a table exposed when the sun is low, or cast shade where it is not needed.
For a fixed roof, assess its shade footprint at more than one time of day and season. Consider the occupied area rather than the pavilion outline alone: a shaded roof edge does not help a seat that remains in direct sun. The Ministry for the Environment notes that permanent overhangs, when positioned in relation to the opening they protect, can have little or no effect on views while blocking high-angle summer radiation and admitting lower-angle winter sun in the orientation context described by the guide. That is a design principle, not a promise that any overhang will achieve the same result at every latitude or on every side of a structure.
Keep the roof edge and supporting structure out of the primary sight lines where the layout permits. A simple plan and section can reveal conflicts early: draw the roof, beams, posts and likely screen locations, then check the view from typical eye positions. Consider whether a support can move to the edge of a view corridor or align with an existing visual boundary. Structural requirements may constrain those moves, so coordinate the view study with the person responsible for engineering rather than treating a slender or widely spaced structure as automatically feasible.
A broad, solid canopy is not the only overhead option. Slats or louvres can filter direct sun while admitting some sky light, and adjustable systems can change their angle as conditions change. But blade depth, spacing, orientation and angle affect both solar control and what occupants see through the roof. The New Zealand guide advises optimizing those properties to eliminate unwanted sunlight and cautions that exterior louvres can obscure outside views. Assess the view upward as well as outward if the sky, tree canopy or surrounding skyline is part of the experience.

Control low-angle sun without closing the sides
Overhead cover is often effective against higher-angle sun but may not prevent glare or direct sun from reaching people from the east or west during morning and afternoon. Do not respond automatically by enclosing the pavilion. First identify the affected times, seats and view directions; then shade only the edge or zone that needs protection.
Possible measures include a narrow sidefin, an adjustable louvre, a mesh or translucent screen, or seasonal planting. Their success depends on geometry and placement. A sidefin can intercept sun arriving from a particular direction while leaving a forward view open, but an overly deep or poorly positioned fin can become a visual barrier. An adjustable screen offers flexibility, but it only helps if someone can operate and maintain it. Planting can soften an edge and provide changing shade, though its density and view impact evolve as it grows.

A denser screen may offer more shade while reducing visibility. The Ministry guide specifically distinguishes the view effects of louvres and mesh: exterior louvres may obscure views, while mesh retains some connection depending on its transparency. Review candidate materials from both sides and at the relevant eye heights rather than relying on a product description alone.
Where one edge receives troublesome sun but also carries an important view, consider whether the seating can be shifted, rotated or grouped in a shaded zone instead of screening the whole side. A smaller intervention can preserve more openness. If the pavilion serves several uses, identify which use takes priority at the affected times; a layout optimized for one fixed seating arrangement may not suit an event that requires clear sight lines across the space.

| Approach | Shade behavior | Views and airflow | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed overhang or canopy | Reliable against the sun angles it is designed to intercept. | Can leave the sides open; a well-positioned overhang can preserve views. | Less responsive to changing low-angle sun; dimensions and placement are site-specific. |
| Slatted or louvred roof | Filters overhead sun; adjustable systems can respond to changing conditions. | Blade angle, depth, spacing and orientation affect sky exposure and views. | Moving parts add operation and maintenance; exterior louvres can obscure views. |
| Pergola with shade cloth | Can provide adjustable or seasonal overhead shade. | Open sides can retain airflow; cloth opacity and coverage affect light and the view through the roof. | Fabric choice, attachment, wind exposure and seasonal operation need consideration. |
| External mesh screen | Can provide more even shade across the screened area. | Transparency determines how much visual connection remains; the screen changes the character of the open edge. | More shade can mean less visibility, and the screen and supports are exposed to weather. |
| Planting or green screen | Shade changes with plant growth and density. | Can soften an edge, but vegetation can narrow a view as it matures. | Requires irrigation and relatively high maintenance; the result changes over time. |
For a smaller open-sided structure, pergola shade cloth is one possible way to tune coverage. Choose its opacity and dimensions to suit the needed shade and view through the roof, and design its attachment for the site’s wind exposure. The Australian Government’s YourHome guidance discusses pergolas with adjustable shade cloth as a shading approach; it does not establish a universal fabric specification or performance figure for every project.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Keep the shade strategy compatible with airflow
An outdoor pavilion needs to provide shelter without unintentionally becoming a wind barrier or a stagnant enclosure. A design that blocks low sun with a solid wall may also redirect or suppress breezes. That is why airflow belongs in the initial site assessment, not as a late adjustment after the shade elements have been fixed.
YourHome describes a “fly roof” approach in which an elevated roof shields a building from radiant heat while allowing breezes to move beneath it. The concept illustrates how overhead protection and ventilation can coexist, but it does not prescribe a particular roof height or shape for a pavilion. Those depend on the project’s wind conditions and structural design. A roof that is raised or opened to improve airflow still needs analysis for wind loads, connections and stability.
When comparing a roof and any side treatment, ask whether the proposed element creates a continuous barrier across a prevailing breeze, whether it changes the wind at seated height, and whether a screen can be limited to the hours or edge that need it. Do not assume that an open-sided form is automatically wind-safe: roof panels and screens can still be exposed to significant forces. Have the design checked by the relevant building professional for the site rather than selecting dimensions by rule of thumb.
Decide whether the pavilion also needs rain cover
Shade and rain protection are related but not identical design goals. A roof adjusted or shaped to preserve a view may leave openings that admit rain, while a more continuous roof can add weight, wind exposure or visual bulk. Establish whether the structure is intended for sun relief only, light rain, or more dependable weather shelter before settling on the roof form and drainage strategy.

A 2017 preliminary concept report for Spokane Riverfront Park describes a project-specific trade-off: rain shelter was limited by elevated shade panels selected to preserve event sight lines and views. It also discusses gaps between layered panels and mesh in relation to wind load. This example shows why shade, rain cover, event visibility and wind behavior can pull the design in different directions; it should not be treated as a general engineering solution or as evidence of a standard panel arrangement.
If rainfall protection is part of the brief, include roof drainage and the path of runoff in the site plan. Directing water toward a walking route, accessible approach or seating area can undermine an otherwise successful layout. The roof and its drainage details should be coordinated with local requirements and project-specific structural advice.

A useful concept test is a small set of drawings that makes the competing goals visible. It need not pretend to provide engineering calculations. It should be detailed enough for the project team to see which views, sun angles and breezes the design protects, and which trade-offs remain.
- Mark the occupied zones. On a site plan, locate typical seats, standing areas and circulation routes. Draw the important views from seated and standing eye positions.
- Map the sun at use times. Show the sun’s direction and height for relevant seasons and hours. Include shade from existing trees, nearby buildings and terrain.
- Draw the roof in plan and section. Check where its shadow falls over the occupied zones, and whether beams, posts or the roof edge cross a primary view.
- Add only targeted edge controls. Where low-angle sun remains a problem, test a fin, adjustable louvre, mesh screen or planting in the smallest area that can reasonably address it.
- Review openness from inside and outside. Check the view through and around each proposed element from both seated and standing positions. For screens, account for how transparency changes with viewing angle and lighting.
- Review wind, rain and upkeep. Identify whether the roof and edge elements allow the intended airflow, how runoff will be handled, and what operation or maintenance adjustable parts, fabric or planting require.
- Resolve local constraints. Check planning rules, height limits, setbacks, accessibility, drainage and structural loads with the relevant local authorities and qualified professionals before the design is finalized.
Where visual judgment is difficult, compare alternatives with drawings or a physical mock-up viewed from the actual approach and seating positions. A sun study can help show when a roof or fin casts shade, but it does not by itself establish structural adequacy, wind comfort, material durability or compliance. Keep those checks separate and assign them to the appropriate project professionals.

Pavilion rules vary by jurisdiction and by the type and location of a development. Confirm applicable planning permissions, height limits, setbacks, area limits, enclosure conditions and any planting requirements before investing in a detailed concept. Also identify accessibility, drainage and structural requirements that may affect the footprint, support locations or roof form.

Singapore’s Urban Redevelopment Authority publishes conditions for qualifying pavilion developments, including requirements concerning open-sided form, height, area, enclosure and planting. Those conditions illustrate how specific pavilion controls can be; they are not general design limits and should not be applied outside their relevant planning context. For a project elsewhere, check the rules of the authority responsible for that site.
Structural review matters even when a pavilion appears simple. The roof, louvres, cloth, mesh and planting supports interact with wind and other loads, and changing the openness or height of a design can affect that analysis. Coordinate the desired view corridors and shade performance with the structural design instead of assuming that visual goals can be met by reducing supports or increasing spans without consequence.
Make the trade-off explicit
There is no single roof or screen that guarantees shade at every hour while preserving every view and admitting every breeze. A sound design identifies which views are essential, when shade is most needed, what level of rain protection is expected and how much ongoing adjustment or care the owner will accept. Then it places the most permanent intervention overhead and reserves more visually intrusive measures for the specific edges and times that need them.
The passive-design guidance from New Zealand and Australia offers useful strategies, but its orientation language reflects its own climate and hemisphere contexts. Translate the principles to the actual latitude, seasons of use, surrounding obstructions and site wind data. The resulting design may be a fixed canopy, a filtered roof, adjustable cloth, a limited screen, carefully managed planting, or a combination; the evidence does not support a universal performance percentage for shade, cooling or view preservation.
