To get rid of a musty closet smell, remove the contents, find and correct any moisture source, then clean and dry the closet before putting anything back. A musty odor can be a warning sign of dampness or mold, so masking it with fragrance alone will not solve the cause.

How do I get rid of a musty smell in my closet?

Work in this order: empty the closet, check belongings and nearby surfaces for dampness or mold, correct the moisture problem, clean suitable hard surfaces, dry everything thoroughly, and return only clean, dry items. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that mold can have a musty smell and grows where moisture is present. The odor is a reason to investigate, not a reliable way to tell how much mold there is or where it is growing.

Start by taking out clothes, shoes, bags, boxes, and other stored items. Separate anything damp, visibly moldy, or musty from clean belongings so the odor does not simply travel back into the closet. Check items that may have been put away before they were completely dry, as well as dirty laundry, wet shoes, and anything affected by a spill. Clean washable items according to their care instructions and let them dry fully before storing them again.

As you empty the closet, keep the categories separate: items that are clean and dry, items that need washing or cleaning, and items that are damp or visibly moldy. This makes it easier to keep clean belongings away from the source while you investigate. Do not shake or brush moldy items in the closet, since that can spread dust or debris around the space. For delicate or valuable belongings, get advice from a suitable cleaning specialist rather than trying an untested method.

  • Keep clean items out of the closet while you inspect and clean it.
  • If the odor is persistent, check the closet and the adjoining room or wall, not only the clothes and shelves.

Find the moisture source before cleaning

Look for leaks, condensation, damp or soft flooring, water stains, peeling finishes, and visible mold. Inspect the closet floor, corners, wall surfaces, ceiling, baseboards, and the wall or room on the other side. If plumbing runs nearby, check for signs of a leak around it. A musty smell can come from wet belongings, but it can also point to moisture in building materials or a concealed area.

Check the closet systematically rather than stopping at the first suspicious item. Look behind boxes and along the edges where walls meet the floor, as well as on shelves and the back of stored items. If there is a stain, note whether the surrounding material feels damp or appears to be changing. Also look at the adjoining room and nearby plumbing: water can affect a closet from outside its immediate footprint. These checks do not identify every hidden source, but they can show when the odor is more than a laundry or shoe issue.

Where you find water or dampness, work out whether it is ongoing. A plumbing leak, water entry, or recurring condensation needs to be addressed; wiping the surface without correcting the cause may leave conditions for the odor or mold to return. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states, “The key to mold control is moisture control.” Its mold cleanup guidance, updated September 8, 2026, likewise warns that if mold is cleaned up but the water problem is not fixed, the mold problem is likely to come back.

What to do with what you find

  • Damp belongings, with no sign of a building leak: Remove them, clean them as appropriate, and dry them completely. Check for spills or other sources that made them wet.
  • Condensation or a generally damp closet: Improve airflow where practical and monitor indoor humidity. If moisture continues to collect, investigate why rather than relying on fragrance or an odor absorber.
  • Staining, wet flooring, or damp building materials: Look for and correct the source of the water. If the source or extent is unclear, consider getting help from a qualified professional.
  • Visible mold: Decide whether the affected material can be cleaned safely and completely. Guidance on cleaning follows below; mold on absorbent materials may not be removable.

Do not treat a dry-looking surface as proof that the underlying problem has ended if the odor or dampness persists. A musty smell can prompt a closer inspection, but it cannot tell you whether growth is on a garment, behind a shelf, or within a building material. If you cannot locate the source, or the closet repeatedly becomes damp, prioritize finding the cause over trying another odor product.

Clean hard surfaces and dry them completely

For suitable hard surfaces, EPA recommends cleaning mold with detergent and water, then drying the surfaces completely. Clean the closet surfaces affected by the odor or visible growth, including shelves and other hard items, without spreading moisture into adjoining materials. Do not put contents back while the cleaned area is still damp.

Use only a cleaning approach appropriate for the surface, and avoid saturating materials that may be damaged by water. The goal is not just to make the surface look clean; it is to remove contamination from cleanable hard surfaces and leave them dry. If an area remains damp after cleaning, allow it to dry before returning belongings. Ventilation can help when conditions permit, and any products used should be handled according to their labels.

Some porous or absorbent materials can be difficult or impossible to clean completely once moldy. EPA says such materials may need to be discarded. This can apply to affected items or materials that cannot be cleaned and dried thoroughly; do not assume that a surface looks clean if it remains damp or continues to smell. For valuable, delicate, or difficult-to-clean belongings, consult an appropriate specialist rather than risking damage with an unsuitable cleaning method.

This distinction matters in a closet because hard shelves and some other surfaces are different from absorbent contents such as fabric, paper, or other porous materials. A detergent-and-water wipe may be appropriate for a cleanable hard surface, but it does not establish that mold has been removed from a porous item. If a moldy absorbent item cannot be cleaned and dried completely, replacement may be needed. The right decision depends on the material and whether it can be cleaned safely, not on adding a stronger fragrance.

Use cleaning products safely

CDC recommends gloves and eye protection when cleaning mold and fresh-air ventilation when using cleaning products. Follow the product label and ventilate the area when practical. Never mix bleach with ammonia or with any other cleaner: CDC warns that mixing bleach with other cleaners can produce poisonous gas. Do not combine products to make a stronger cleaner.

If the affected area is extensive, appears to involve building materials, or cannot be cleaned and dried safely, stop and seek guidance from EPA or CDC mold-cleanup information or a qualified professional. The available federal guidance does not establish a closet-specific area threshold for when professional remediation is required, so avoid treating an arbitrary closet measurement as a definitive safety rule.

Control humidity and airflow so the odor does not return

Once the source has been corrected and the closet is clean and dry, reduce the chance of renewed dampness. Leave the closet door open when practical to improve airflow, and avoid packing belongings so tightly that air cannot move around them. Do not put damp laundry, wet shoes, or incompletely dried items back inside.

Humidity recommendations differ slightly across EPA guidance. The agency’s indoor-air guide recommends keeping indoor relative humidity between 30 and 50 percent and suggests using a humidity gauge. Its mold information gives a range of 30 to 60 percent to reduce mold growth, while CDC recommends keeping humidity no higher than 50 percent. A practical target is at or below 50 percent where feasible; use the source’s range in context rather than treating one number as a guarantee that mold cannot grow.

A hygrometer or humidity gauge helps show whether indoor humidity is staying high. If a reading remains elevated, an appropriately sized dehumidifier may provide supplemental humidity control, and ventilation can help where conditions allow. Neither a device nor an odor absorber repairs a leak, removes mold, or substitutes for cleaning. EPA also advises drying wet building materials and furnishings within 24 to 48 hours to help prevent mold growth; treat that as a prompt response window, not permission to leave wet materials unattended until the deadline.

Use a humidity reading as a way to monitor conditions, not as a diagnosis of the closet. If the reading is persistently high, look for why and consider what humidity-control options suit the space. EPA’s figures are recommendations for indoor humidity and reducing mold growth; they do not guarantee that mold cannot grow when a room is within a stated range. A leak or damp material still needs attention even if a gauge reading seems acceptable.

Choose an optional product by the job it can do

Option What it helps with What it does not do
Hygrometer or humidity gauge Measures relative humidity so you can monitor conditions; EPA explicitly recommends using a gauge. Does not remove water, correct a leak, or clean mold.
Dehumidifier or closet moisture absorber May provide supplemental help if humidity remains high; check the product label for its intended space or capacity and maintenance needs. Does not establish or fix the moisture source, and does not remove existing mold.
Activated charcoal or baking soda odor product May help with residual odor as a secondary measure. A Connecticut Department of Public Health household-odor handout mentions ventilation and charcoal among general approaches; a lifestyle article discusses baking soda products. Neither source establishes these products as a substitute for cleaning, drying, or correcting dampness. No closet-specific efficacy figure is established.

For any optional product, check the label for intended use, capacity, replacement or maintenance requirements, and any ventilation or safety directions. Choose based on the problem you are trying to address: measuring humidity, reducing humidity, or managing residual odor are different tasks.

There is no need to choose between cleaning and humidity control, because they address different parts of the problem. A gauge gives information; a dehumidifier or absorber may help manage humidity; an odor product may address residual smell. None is a substitute for repairing a water source or cleaning and drying affected materials. Product labels are the place to check capacity, intended space, and maintenance needs; do not assume that an item marketed for a closet can handle a leak or mold.

Keep the closet fresh with a simple routine

After the cleanup, occasional checks can help catch a returning moisture problem before it affects more belongings. Focus on changes that give you useful information rather than adding fragrance to the routine.

  • Put away only clean, fully dry clothes and shoes.
  • Leave some space around stored belongings so air can move, and open the closet door periodically when practical.
  • Use a humidity gauge if indoor humidity is a concern; investigate persistently high readings instead of relying on a scented product.
  • Check for new stains, condensation, damp flooring, or a recurring musty odor, especially after a leak or water event.
  • Dry wet furnishings and building materials promptly. EPA recommends drying them within 24 to 48 hours to help prevent mold growth.

If the smell returns, do not repeat surface cleaning indefinitely without checking for renewed dampness or a hidden source. Reinspect nearby surfaces and belongings, and seek qualified help if you cannot locate the source or the affected materials cannot be cleaned and dried safely.

A useful routine is simple: before storing a load of laundry or shoes, make sure they are fully dry; leave enough room for air to move between stored items; and check the closet and adjoining area if a musty odor reappears. After a water event, dry wet materials promptly and keep an eye out for dampness or staining. The aim is to catch moisture early, not to keep adding odor-control products after the smell has returned.

Why masking the smell is not enough

Closet fragrance, scented sachets, and odor absorbers address how the air smells, not why it smells that way. A musty odor can be associated with moisture and mold, and mold control depends on controlling moisture. Cleaning and drying the affected area, handling moldy porous materials appropriately, and correcting leaks or other water sources are complementary parts of the remedy—not competing options.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes a musty smell in a closet?

A musty smell can come from damp belongings, such as wet shoes or clothes stored before they were fully dry, or from moisture and mold in the closet or nearby building materials. CDC notes that mold can smell musty and grows where moisture is present. Empty the closet and inspect both its contents and adjoining surfaces to look for the source.

What humidity should I keep my home at to help prevent mold?

EPA’s indoor-air guide recommends indoor relative humidity of 30 to 50 percent, its mold information gives 30 to 60 percent to reduce mold growth, and CDC recommends no higher than 50 percent. A practical target is at or below 50 percent where feasible. A hygrometer can help you monitor humidity, but no reading replaces fixing a leak or drying damp materials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will baking soda, charcoal, or an air freshener remove a musty closet smell?

They may help with residual odor, but they do not fix a leak, remove mold, or replace cleaning and drying. A Connecticut Department of Public Health household-odor handout mentions ventilation and charcoal among general approaches; a lifestyle article discusses baking soda products. Use an odor-control product only as a secondary measure after addressing moisture and cleaning the affected area.

How quickly should wet items or building materials be dried?

EPA advises drying wet building materials and furnishings within 24 to 48 hours to help prevent mold growth. Start drying promptly rather than waiting for the end of that window. Clean and dry wet clothes, shoes, or other belongings before returning them to the closet.

Can I clean mold from closet shelves or belongings with bleach?

EPA recommends detergent and water for cleaning mold from suitable hard surfaces, followed by thorough drying. Some porous or absorbent materials may need to be discarded if they are moldy and cannot be cleaned completely. CDC advises gloves and eye protection when cleaning mold and warns never to mix bleach with ammonia or any other cleaner, because mixing products can produce poisonous gas. Follow product labels and seek appropriate help if the cleanup cannot be done safely.

When should I get professional help for a moldy closet?

Consider a qualified professional if the moisture source is unresolved or unclear, the affected area appears to involve building materials, or materials cannot be cleaned and dried safely. EPA and CDC provide mold-cleanup guidance, but the cited federal advice does not establish a closet-specific area threshold for professional remediation.

The Bottom Line

To deodorize a closet for good, find and correct the moisture source, clean suitable hard surfaces, and dry the space and belongings completely before putting anything back. Keep humidity at or below 50 percent where feasible, improve airflow when practical, and treat absorbers or fragrance as optional secondary measures—not fixes for leaks or mold.
