If your mantel includes dried flowers, choose battery-operated flameless candles rather than lit candles. Dried botanicals are combustible, and an open flame can ignite nearby décor. Keep flowers and other combustible decorations away from fireplace heat as well as candle flames; use the clearance instructions for your specific fireplace, not a universal mantel measurement.
Why dried flowers and candles need separation
Dried flowers may look delicate, but they are combustible material. The same basic concern applies to other dried botanicals and decorations that can burn: a candle flame can ignite them if they are too close, and heat from an operating fireplace can make nearby décor unsafe. A mantel arrangement should therefore be planned around both possible heat sources—the fireplace and any candle—not just around how the objects look when the fireplace is off.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that, in the United States from 2020 through 2024, more than half of candle fires started when flammable décor was too close to a lit candle. That finding concerns flammable décor broadly; it is not a separate incident rate for dried flowers on mantels. The NFPA estimated an annual average of 5,894 U.S. home structure fires in which candles were the heat source during those years. Those fires were associated with annual averages of 63 civilian deaths, 532 civilian injuries and $286 million in property damage.
These figures are a reason to treat nearby decoration seriously, not a way to calculate the risk of one particular arrangement. They do not tell you that a specific distance is safe for a particular bouquet, candle, mantel or fireplace. The practical choice is straightforward: when dried flowers are part of the display, get the candle-like look with flameless candles and keep the botanicals clear of fireplace heat.

In other words, think about the arrangement as combustible décor, not simply as a color or texture. A vase or holder does not change the fact that the dried material can burn. Nor does placing the flowers on one end of the mantel automatically make them safe: the fireplace manual and the candle guidance both matter, and the arrangement must remain outside the specific clearances required for the appliance.
Choose a candle-like effect without an open flame
USFA recommends considering battery-operated flameless candles. They are the preferred option for an arrangement that includes dried flowers because they do not have an open flame. Check the individual product’s instructions for battery, charging, placement and operating details; designs vary, and “flameless” does not mean every product has identical heat or battery characteristics.
| Consideration | Battery-operated flameless candle | Lit candle |
|---|---|---|
| Open flame | No open flame. | Yes. The flame can ignite nearby combustible décor. |
| Use beside dried flowers | The preferred candle-like choice for a display that includes dried flowers. Keep the flowers away from fireplace heat. | Do not place it beside dried flowers. General candle precautions do not make that proximity safe. |
| Power | Battery-operated models need batteries; check the product’s instructions for its specific power requirements. | No batteries are needed to burn the candle. |
| Fireplace considerations | Follow product directions and the fireplace manufacturer’s clearance instructions for nearby décor. | Follow candle precautions as well as the fireplace manufacturer’s instructions; do not treat a general candle distance as a fireplace-mantel clearance. |
A practical arrangement can use flameless candles as the candle-like visual element and dried flowers as a separate decorative element. Keep the flowers outside the fireplace’s required clearance area, and do not put them where they could fall or be moved into a flame or heat source. The fireplace manual is the controlling reference for the particular appliance and its required clearances. If it does not answer your situation, ask the manufacturer or local fire authority rather than estimating a safe mantel distance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor the display itself, decide first which elements are combustible and where the fireplace’s required clearance applies. Then place the flameless candles and flowers without relying on one object to protect another. For example, a flameless candle can provide the candle-like accent while the dried arrangement remains in a separate part of the display, but the flowers still need to be clear of the fireplace’s heat according to the appliance instructions. There is no basis for treating the candle’s lack of an open flame as permission to put the flowers in a fireplace’s restricted area.
Keep the setup simple enough that it is easy to check: the flowers should not be able to slip, droop or fall toward an operating fireplace, and the candles should be positioned and used as their maker directs. This is not a substitute for a clearance measurement in the manual. If the appliance instructions prohibit combustible décor in the area where you want the arrangement, move or remove the arrangement rather than trying to work around the restriction.

Plan the mantel around the fireplace’s actual clearances
There is no single mantel clearance that can be applied to every fireplace, mantel material and operating condition. The general distance in fire-safety guidance is not a substitute for appliance-specific instructions. Before placing décor, find the manual for the installed fireplace and check the requirements for combustible materials and the mantel. Follow any applicable local requirements as well.
- Identify the fireplace. Use the appliance label, installation paperwork or owner’s manual to confirm which fireplace the instructions cover. Do not rely on a generic rule found for a different appliance type or model.
- Check the manufacturer’s clearance directions. Look for instructions covering the mantel and combustible materials around the fireplace. Apply the stated conditions to the fireplace’s operating configuration; do not assume a measurement for one material or location applies to another.
- Keep dried flowers outside the required clearance. Include the full arrangement, not just the container or the flowers’ base, when considering where combustible décor sits. Do not place flowers where heat could reach them or where they might shift toward a flame or hot area.
- Leave the display in place only if it remains clear during use. If the flowers or other décor are within the manufacturer’s prohibited area, remove or relocate them before operating the fireplace. Do not rely on a candle holder, a decorative screen or a presumed safe-looking gap to override the manual.
- Ask when the instructions are unclear. Contact the fireplace manufacturer or local fire authority for guidance specific to the appliance and installation. Do not convert a general fire-safety recommendation into a model-specific clearance.
USFA advises keeping anything that can burn at least three feet from heat sources, including fireplaces. This is general heating-safety guidance, not a universal measurement for every mantel or a replacement for the fireplace manual. Where the manual or applicable local requirements call for a greater clearance, follow those requirements.
It is important not to confuse this three-foot general heating recommendation with a mantel specification. A fireplace’s design, installation and instructions determine the appliance-specific requirements; the general figure does not answer how far a particular dried arrangement must be from a particular mantel or firebox. Likewise, a measurement in a manual for one location or material should not be assumed to cover every item or surface nearby.
If you cannot locate the manual, identify the appliance before styling the mantel. The model label and installation paperwork may help you find the correct instructions. If the documentation is missing or does not clearly address the proposed decoration, contact the manufacturer or local fire authority. Until you have an answer for the specific fireplace, do not guess at a clearance or treat a broad guideline as approval for the arrangement.
Make the clearance decision with the fireplace in mind as it is actually installed and used. A layout that appears separated while the fireplace is off is not necessarily appropriate during operation. The manufacturer’s instructions are the place to find any relevant conditions; if they require combustible décor to be farther away or absent, those directions take precedence over the visual plan.

If you use real candles, follow these precautions
Real candles are not the suitable choice beside dried flowers. If using a lit candle elsewhere, separate it from all combustible material and follow the candle maker’s directions. USFA’s candle page says, “Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that burns.” That is a general candle precaution, not permission to put a flame near dried botanicals or a mantel-specific clearance for a fireplace.

- Keep the candle at least 12 inches from anything that can burn, and do not place it beside dried flowers.
- Use a sturdy, stable holder that will not burn or tip over. USFA advises: “When you use candles, place them in a sturdy, safe candle holder that will not burn or tip over. Consider using battery-operated flameless candles.”
- Place the candle where it cannot be knocked over or reached by children or pets. Follow the candle manufacturer’s directions for use.
- Never leave a lit candle unattended. USFA says, “Blow out candles when you leave a room or home, or when you go to bed.”
A sturdy holder helps support a candle; it does not make dried flowers safe beside the flame. Keeping the flowers away from the candle and from fireplace heat remains essential.
The 12-inch advice is a minimum general candle precaution, not a promise that every placement beyond that distance is appropriate. It applies to combustible material generally, and dried flowers fall into that category. Do not interpret the recommendation as a way to calculate how close a lit candle may sit to a bouquet, or as an exception to the instruction not to locate an open flame on or near combustible decorative material.
If a real candle is part of a separate arrangement elsewhere in the room, keep it on a stable surface in a sturdy holder, maintain the stated separation from anything that burns, and extinguish it whenever you leave the room or go to bed. Do not leave it burning while you are away, even briefly. These precautions address candle use; they do not override the fireplace’s own clearance rules or make a real candle suitable for the dried-flower mantel display.
For this particular decorating goal, the safer decision is to choose a battery-operated flameless candle instead of trying to make a real flame work among dried stems. That option avoids an open flame, while the product’s own instructions still apply. Continue to keep all combustible décor—including flowers—outside the fireplace’s required clearance.

Understand what fire-code guidance does—and does not—say
The 2024 International Fire Code (IFC), a model code, states: “Open flames such as from candles and lanterns shall not be located on or near decorative material or similar combustible materials.” This is directly relevant to dried-flower décor. The IFC is not automatically binding everywhere: adoption and amendments vary by jurisdiction. Check with the local fire authority to determine which requirements apply where you live.
Neither this model-code wording nor the general USFA recommendations establish one fireplace-mantel-specific clearance for every appliance. The fireplace manufacturer’s instructions and applicable local requirements are the references for the specific installation.
The model-code language reinforces the distinction between an open flame and combustible decoration. It is not a universal statement of local law, so the local fire authority is the right place to confirm whether the IFC has been adopted and whether amendments apply in your area. Do not assume that a model code has the same legal effect in every town, state or jurisdiction.
For a mantel decision, use each source for what it addresses: the IFC wording concerns open flames near decorative combustible materials; USFA’s candle page gives general precautions for lit candles; USFA’s heating guidance gives general clearance advice around heat sources; and the fireplace manual provides the instructions for the specific appliance. None of those general references creates one number that can safely replace the manual’s mantel and combustible-material directions.
Maintain the fireplace, not just the display
Safe decoration does not replace fireplace and chimney maintenance. USFA recommends professional cleaning and inspection of heating equipment and chimneys every year. Arrange that annual service with a qualified professional, and follow the appliance maker’s maintenance instructions. If inspection or cleaning identifies a problem, follow the professional’s advice before operating the fireplace or returning décor to the mantel.

Annual attention matters to the whole fireplace setup, not just to the visible mantel. Keep the manual with the home’s appliance information so its clearance and maintenance instructions are available when you rearrange décor or prepare for the heating season. If the fireplace or its installation changes, check that the instructions you are following still apply to the installed appliance and ask the manufacturer or local authority when uncertain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put dried flowers near a fireplace?
Dried flowers are combustible, so keep them away from fireplace heat and outside the clearance required by your fireplace manufacturer. There is no universal mantel-specific distance for every model. Check the manual and ask the manufacturer or local fire authority if the instructions are unclear; do not guess from a general guideline.
How do I decorate a fireplace mantel with candles safely?
If the mantel display includes dried flowers, use battery-operated flameless candles rather than lit candles. Keep all combustible décor clear of fireplace heat according to the appliance manual. If you use a real candle elsewhere, follow the candle maker’s directions, use a sturdy holder, keep it at least 12 inches from anything that burns, and extinguish it when leaving the room or going to bed.
