How to Degas Epoxy Resin on the (Very) Cheap

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a tiny epoxy project, a 2019 Hackaday article describes using a battery-powered food-container vacuum pump with an airtight jar to degas resin. It is a reported experiment, not a verified recipe: the article gives no vacuum rating for the jar and does not establish how well the setup works across different resins. For repeat work, use a vacuum-rated chamber compatible with your material. If your aim is to reduce visible bubbles in a casting as it cures, consider a pressure pot instead; it works by a different mechanism.

What the cheap setup can—and cannot—do

Hackaday’s December 19, 2019 article reports Jasper Sikken’s small-scale method: a battery-powered food-container vacuum pump connected to an airtight jar. The article says the approach is for work smaller than a paperweight and that larger work needs a larger chamber. It does not test or certify jars for vacuum use, so do not assume an ordinary jar is safe under vacuum or substitute an unverified vessel for vacuum-rated equipment. Read the Hackaday demonstration.

That distinction matters: a low-cost pump does not make every container a suitable vacuum chamber. A vessel used under vacuum must be designed and rated for that service. If you cannot verify the vessel’s suitability, do not evacuate it.

Vacuum chamber or pressure pot?

Choose based on when you need to deal with bubbles. Vacuum lowers pressure so gas bubbles expand and can escape from resin. A pressure pot compresses bubbles while the casting cures; it does not remove gas from the mixed resin in the same way.

Option How it works Best fit Important constraint
Vacuum chamber Lowers pressure to help gas leave the material. Degassing resin or components before casting. Use a vacuum-rated chamber compatible with the material; check its volume and the pump instructions.
Pressure pot Applies pressure during cure to compress bubbles. Castings and molds that can tolerate pressure curing. Keep the casting pressurized until firm and hard, follow the pot’s instructions, and never exceed its rating. Bubbles in a mold can distort it.

TotalBoat describes a vacuum chamber as equipment for degassing, not curing, and says it can be used on resin and hardener before mixing or on mixed epoxy after it has been poured into a mold. Its pressure-pot advice is manufacturer guidance, not a universal setting: follow the instructions and rating for your exact pot. TotalBoat’s comparison of vacuum chambers and pressure pots.

Improve results without buying a chamber

Process changes can reduce air introduced during mixing and give coarse bubbles a chance to rise, but they are not equivalent to vacuum degassing. The resin’s viscosity, depth, exposed surface area, temperature, and pot life all affect how readily gas escapes.

  • Make Fish Baits: Can be for soft plastisol and making fishing baits.
  • Mix slowly and thoroughly. Vigorous stirring can introduce air. Master Bond recommends slow, thorough mixing to avoid injecting air into the compound. Master Bond’s guidance on degassing epoxy compounds.
  • Pour without turbulence. A steady, controlled pour is less likely to whip additional air into the resin.
  • Allow time for coarse bubbles to rise. If your working time permits, let the mixed material rest before pouring. Do not wait so long that it begins to cure in the mixing container.
  • Consider a shallow layer or larger exposed surface. Where the project and product instructions allow, reducing material depth or spreading resin in a suitable shallow container can help bubbles travel out. Account for the working time and avoid transferring contamination into the batch.
  • Be cautious with heat. Warming can lower viscosity, but heating mixed resin may shorten its working time. Master Bond notes that heat may not suit quick-curing epoxy. Use only methods allowed by the resin manufacturer.

Crosslink Technology also discusses process factors such as viscosity and exposure, while cautioning that its recommendations may not apply to every situation. Crosslink Technology’s technical resources.

Choosing a vacuum chamber for repeated work

If you degas epoxy regularly, a vacuum-rated chamber is the more dependable choice than adapting an unverified jar. Before use, check the chamber manual and pump maker’s instructions for these points:

  • Material compatibility: Confirm compatibility with the specific resin, hardener, and any cleaning agents you use. Compatibility can depend on the chamber’s components, not just the vessel.
  • Vessel rating: Use equipment intended for vacuum service and operate it as its manufacturer specifies.
  • Capacity: Match chamber volume to the batch and container, leaving enough space for resin to foam or rise as gas escapes.
  • Pump and valve procedure: Follow the exact valve sequence and pump instructions for that chamber.
  • Resin working time: Make sure setup and degassing fit within the product’s pot life.

Compatibility restrictions are product-specific. For example, the Easy Composites DC-26 manual says its 26L chamber can degas epoxy, polyurethane, and RTV silicone, but warns against using its acrylic lid with acrylic resin, styrene-borne polyester or vinylester resin, and solvents including acetone, alcohol, or MEK for cleaning. It also emphasizes correct valve sequencing and following the pump maker’s instructions. Those cautions apply to that system; check the manual for the chamber you own. A practical decision

  1. For a one-off, very small project: reduce air with careful mixing and pouring. Treat the Hackaday food-container setup as an unvalidated demonstration, and do not use a jar unless it is explicitly rated for vacuum service.
  2. For repeated degassing before a pour: use a vacuum-rated chamber whose manual confirms compatibility with your resin and cleaning routine.
  3. For minimizing visible bubbles as a casting cures: consider a pressure pot only if the resin, mold, and casting process suit pressure curing. Follow the pot’s instructions and stay within its rating.
