Bloodgood Japanese maples do best in well-drained soil that stays consistently moist, with a site suited to your climate. In hotter or windy locations, favor morning sun and afternoon shade; cooler northern gardens may support more direct sun. Water when the root zone is dry rather than following a fixed calendar, and prune sparingly outside spring.

What makes Bloodgood different?

Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’ is a named Japanese maple cultivar grown as an ornamental landscape tree. North Carolina State Extension notes that it was sold by Bloodgood Nursery on Long Island before World War II and has received the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit. Japanese maple cultivars vary in growth habit, foliage and size, so species-level advice should be adapted to the plant and its site. North Carolina State Extension’s Bloodgood profile describes this cultivar; UF/IFAS’s Japanese maple guidance provides species-level landscape context.

Japanese maples can work as specimen or accent trees near a patio or deck, in smaller spaces, or in Japanese-style gardens. Before planting, check the cultivar’s mature form and the available space rather than assuming every Japanese maple reaches the same size.

How much sun can a Bloodgood maple take?

It depends on local conditions. The Royal Horticultural Society says foliage color is best in partial shade, though the cultivar can tolerate full sun. North Carolina State Extension notes that Bloodgood can take direct sun in northern areas. In hotter settings, hot afternoon sun and sweeping winds can add stress, particularly when soil moisture is low.

#1 Best Overall
Japanese Red Maple, 3 gal, Nursery Pot
  • Seasonal Color Display: Leaves stay red for most of the summer and turn greenish red during hot weather in the southern part of its range, with reddish fall color providing year-round visual interest
  • Compact Growth Habit: Japanese Red Maples typically have a compact and spreading growth habit, making them suitable for smaller gardens or as focal points in landscaping. They range from small to medium in size, with some varieties staying more compact than others
  • Distinctive Foliage: Japanese Red Maple trees are prized for their stunning and distinctive deep red or burgundy foliage. The leaves often exhibit a delicate, lace-like appearance, contributing to the tree's ornamental value
  • Attractive Bark Texture: The bark of mature Japanese Red Maples often develops an attractive, smooth texture with a grayish-brown hue
  • Hardiness Zones: USDA Hardiness Zones: Typically Zones 5-8
  • Hot or exposed site: Choose morning sun with filtered light or afternoon shade, and shelter the tree from strong winds where practical.
  • Cooler northern site: More direct sun may be workable if the root zone does not dry out.
  • Any site: Watch the tree’s response; no exposure makes it immune to leaf scorch.

See the RHS Bloodgood profile and NCSU cultivar guidance for their site and exposure notes.

What soil and watering does it need?

Prioritize drainage and steady moisture, not a rigid watering schedule. UF/IFAS advises well-drained soil without standing water around the roots. During dry weather, check the root zone and water when it is dry. Extension Foundation Ask Extension’s Bloodgood advice uses dryness at roughly 1–2 inches deep as a rule of thumb for checking; that is a trigger to assess and water, not a universal interval.

  1. Check the soil near the root zone, especially during hot or dry spells.
  2. If it is dry at about 1–2 inches, water slowly so moisture reaches the root zone.
  3. Reassess according to weather, soil and the tree’s establishment stage; do not keep watering if the site is already wet or poorly drained.

Newly planted trees need monitoring so the root zone does not dry while roots establish. Once established, continue checking during drought or heat rather than assuming rainfall or a calendar will meet the tree’s needs. See Ask Extension’s Bloodgood watering guidance, RHS watering advice and UF/IFAS drainage guidance.

Why are the leaves scorched?

Leaf scorch can result from too little soil moisture or excessive exposure, according to the RHS. Hot afternoon sun, wind and dry conditions can combine to stress foliage. Before treating the tree for disease, check whether its site is too exposed and whether the root zone has dried out.

Japanese maples can also be affected by pests and leaf diseases. NCSU lists aphids, horse chestnut scale and borers as possible pests, while noting they rarely cause long-term health problems. UF/IFAS mentions tar spot and other leaf spots, which are rarely serious enough to require control. These are possibilities, not diagnoses: inspect the tree and identify the cause before considering a pesticide or fungicide. The cited guidance does not recommend a routine spray program.

When and how should you prune?

Prune modestly to address structure or remove damaged branches; the available cultivar guidance does not establish a need for routine shaping. Avoid spring pruning. The Morton Arboretum warns: “Avoid pruning maples in spring as they are bleeders and will lose a large amount of sap.” Its Japanese maple care page explains this caution. Avoid severe annual cuts or assuming one exact pruning date suits every climate.

  • Use a drained growing medium and protect young leaves from harsh sun and drying wind.
  • Allow time for seed preparation and establishment; mature trees develop over multiple seasons.

How should you judge local suitability?

Winter hardiness and summer growing conditions are separate considerations. The cited material does not establish a dependable cultivar-specific hardiness range to apply everywhere. Check the current NCSU Bloodgood profile and local extension advice for your location; also consider summer heat, wind exposure, soil drainage and your ability to keep the root zone moist.

If you are comparing Japanese maples, weigh mature size and shape, foliage, suitability for the intended sun and heat, local winter conditions, and available space. Cultivars vary widely, and the available guidance does not support ranking Bloodgood as the best choice for every garden.
