Deep-cleaning is a careful reset, not a reason to disinfect every surface. For most homes, routine cleaning with soap or detergent removes dirt and most germs; disinfect when someone is sick or at higher risk, or when a specific task calls for it. Work from top to bottom, match products to surfaces, and finish with floors so dust and debris are removed last.
What deep-cleaning means—and what it doesn’t
CDC defines cleaning as removing “most germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces.” Its guidance, When and How to Clean and Disinfect Your Home (published January 31, 2025), says routine cleaning is generally enough; disinfection is usually unnecessary unless someone is sick or at higher risk. Clean first: dirt can interfere with sanitizing or disinfecting products.

There is no single cleaner or wet-cleaning method that is safe for every stone, wood finish, fabric, appliance, or floor. Check both the cleaning-product label and the item maker’s care instructions, especially before using a chemical product on a finished or delicate surface.
Gather a small, surface-appropriate kit
- A soap- or detergent-based cleaner suited to the surfaces you will clean.
- Cloths for damp dusting and wiping.
- A vacuum for carpets, rugs, and fabric-covered furniture.
- Products specifically labeled for any surface that needs sanitizing or disinfecting.
Choose a product by its intended use and surface compatibility, not by assuming one bottle works everywhere. For sanitizers and disinfectants, check the label for contact time, protective equipment, dilution, ventilation, and storage instructions. Use a top-to-bottom cleaning sequence
This is a practical workflow drawn from guidance on dusting, laundering, vacuuming, and damp mopping—not a formally tested or official protocol.
- Clear clutter. Put away loose items so you can reach the surfaces underneath.
- Dust high surfaces first. Damp-dust shelves, ledges, and other suitable hard surfaces, working downward.
- Clean fixtures and counters. Use a compatible cleaner on surfaces and high-touch areas. Clean before applying any sanitizer or disinfectant.
- Handle soft goods. Launder washable linens and other items according to care instructions; vacuum carpets, rugs, and upholstery.
- Finish with floors. Vacuum carpets and rugs, then damp-mop compatible hard floors as appropriate.
Kitchen: clean food-contact surfaces carefully
Clean counters and other compatible hard surfaces with soap and water or a suitable household cleaner. Clean food-preparation surfaces, and sanitize surfaces that have contacted raw meat, poultry, or their juices. Follow the product label and the counter or appliance maker’s instructions; a cleaner suitable for one countertop may not be suitable for another.

Bathroom: clean first, disinfect when appropriate
Remove visible soil and clean high-touch fixtures with a product suitable for the surface. Consider disinfection when someone in the home is sick or at higher risk. If using a disinfectant, keep the treated surface visibly wet for the full contact time stated on its label. Official guidance cited here does not set a special deep-clean schedule for each bathroom fixture.

Damp-dust suitable hard surfaces. Vacuum carpets, rugs, and fabric-covered furniture; EPA recommends routine vacuuming of carpets and fabric-covered furniture in its guidance on care for indoor air quality. Wash household linens when appropriate, following their care instructions.

Bedrooms: prioritize touch points and washable linens
Clean regularly touched surfaces and vacuum rugs and carpets. Launder sheets and other washable linens according to their care instructions, and dry them completely. Use the same surface-specific approach for furniture and finishes as you would in other rooms.
Floors, rugs, drapes, and upholstery
For carpets and rugs, vacuum; for washable soft items, follow the manufacturer’s laundering instructions where possible. Vacuum fabric-covered furniture, and damp-mop hard floors only when the flooring’s care guidance allows it. Avoid treating all floors or fabrics as interchangeable: moisture and cleaning chemicals can be unsuitable for some materials and finishes.

Follow the device maker’s cleaning instructions. CDC suggests using a wipeable cover where appropriate to make cleaning easier. Do not assume a household spray is safe for a screen, keyboard, or other electronic component.

Wash clothing, towels, cloth toys, and linens with detergent at the recommended temperature, then dry them completely. Clean hampers or baskets using guidance appropriate to their material, and wash your hands after handling dirty laundry.

Use cleaning products safely
- Follow the label for use, dilution, surface compatibility, contact time, protective equipment, and storage.
- Do not mix cleaning products, or mix bleach with another chemical.
- Keep products out of reach of children and pets.
- Ventilate during and after indoor cleaning when appropriate and consistent with label directions. EPA advises increasing ventilation where suitable, but avoiding outdoor-air ventilation when outdoor pollution is high or when it would make the home too cold, hot, or humid; see its indoor air quality guidance.
- Some cleaning and disinfection products can trigger asthma. Take label precautions and consider whether the product is appropriate for household members.
For bleach disinfection, CDC advises using only a product appropriate for disinfection and following its label. Do not use splashless bleach or bleach products whose sodium hypochlorite percentage is unspecified for disinfection. Never mix bleach with another cleaner.
