For many kitchens, pendants are a practical choice: two work well as a starting point on a 4–6-foot island, while longer islands may suit three pendants or a linear suspension.
How to plan kitchen island lighting
Choose lighting for the work the island actually does. A prep-heavy island needs useful, directed light; an island used mainly for seating and entertaining can give more weight to atmosphere. In either case, layer ambient, task, and accent lighting rather than expecting one fixture to do everything. Dimmers or compatible smart controls can shift the room from bright prep light to a softer evening setting.

How many pendants should go over an island?
Two pendants are a common starting point for a 4–6-foot island. For a longer island, consider three pendants or another odd-number grouping. Begin with roughly 24–30 inches between pendant centers, then adjust for fixture width and the island’s usable work zones. These are planning benchmarks, not a substitute for checking the fixture dimensions and sightlines in the actual room. How high should kitchen island lights hang?
Use the bottom of the fixture as the reference point and start around 28–34 inches above the countertop. Manufacturer guidance from Juno, an Acuity Brands company, gives 29–33 inches; Homes & Gardens gives 30–36 inches. Treat these as benchmarks: shade size, ceiling height, occupants, and views across the room can all affect the final position. Check seated and standing sightlines before installation.

What size and shape should the fixture grouping be?
Keep the overall grouping visually contained over the island. Homes & Gardens suggests a grouping around two-thirds of the island’s length. A slim linear suspension is often easier to proportion over a long surface than a row of broad shades. For any option, mock up the fixture footprint before ordering so the lighting feels balanced without crowding the ceiling or blocking views.
What color temperature works well?
A useful starting range is 2,700–3,500K. Lighting designer Darren Parnaby of Beem recommends 2,700K or 3,000K for kitchens. The right choice depends on the mood and the surrounding finishes; for color-tunable lamps, check whether the fixture, app, hub, and dimmer all support the control method you plan to use. How can you reduce glare?
Look at the light source from both standing and seated positions. Exposed bulbs can create glare, especially in clear-glass or cage fixtures; use dimmable LED lamps, a diffuser, or a shade that hides the bulb if needed. Directional shades can put light on the work surface, while opal, milk, or ribbed glass softens the bright point. Test a sample lamp or mock-up from the angles where people work and sit.
