To decorate a window with Christmas lights, choose a string rated for the side of the window where it will be used, inspect it for damage, measure the route, and mount it with plastic hooks or another method approved by the manufacturer. Keep indoor-only lights indoors; any string or electrical connection exposed to outdoor conditions needs equipment specifically labeled for that use.
Choose lights that suit the window location
First decide whether the lights will sit on the room side of the glass or be installed outside. Check the product label: indoor-only strings should stay indoors, while a display exposed to outdoor conditions calls for a string specifically marked for outdoor use. UL Solutions explains the distinction between indoor-only and indoor/outdoor markings in its decorative lighting strings bulletin.
For outdoor displays, follow the light maker’s directions for cords, plugs, and connections as well as the string’s location rating. A window ledge or exterior frame can expose equipment to weather even when the lights are close to the glass.
Pick a string and plan its route
Measure before buying
Measure the path you want to illuminate—such as the top and sides of the frame—and compare it with the product listing. Check both the illuminated length and the lead-wire length; listings may distinguish between them. Leave enough slack to reach the power source without pulling the string tight, and do not assume a stated total length is all lit.

Choose the look and light type
LED strings are available in varied colors, shapes, and lengths. ENERGY STAR’s Decorative Light Strings page says certified decorative strings use approximately 92% less energy than conventional incandescent strings and have at least a three-year manufacturer-backed warranty; the page also describes independent testing and indoor and outdoor options. Its listed specification effective date is January 2011, so check current program materials and the product’s own label before relying on eligibility details: ENERGY STAR Decorative Light Strings.
ENERGY STAR’s separate holiday-specific Light Strings page gives a different comparison—approximately 70% less energy than incandescent strings. Inspect the lights before hanging
Check both new and stored strings before installation. Look for cracked or broken sockets, frayed or bare wires, and loose connections. Do not use a damaged string; discard it rather than trying to repair or hide the damage. CPSC’s holiday-light guidance recommends inspecting strings and using outdoor-rated products for outdoor displays: CPSC holiday decoration safety guidance.
Hang the lights without damaging the wire
- Choose a mounting method. Use plastic light hooks or another accessory permitted by the manufacturer. UL’s holiday decorating guidance warns that metal nails and staples can damage wires and create shock or fire hazards: UL holiday decorating safety.
- Plan the attachment points. Follow the string maker’s instructions for spacing and support. Keep hooks from pinching, cutting, or sharply bending the wire.
- Hang the string loosely along the planned route. Avoid pulling it taut, and keep the plug and lead wire arranged as instructed. Do not alter the string or connect more lights than its instructions allow.
- Connect power appropriately. For outdoor strings, CPSC advises using a receptacle protected by a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI), or a portable GFCI. Use outdoor-rated extension cords and keep connections protected as the manufacturer directs.
Window materials and finishes vary, so do not assume a particular adhesive or clip will hold safely or come off without damage. Use hardware compatible with the frame and the light maker’s instructions; avoid placing fasteners where they could penetrate a wire.

Use the display safely
- Keep indoor-only strings and indoor electrical connections away from outdoor exposure.
- Do not use strings with damaged sockets, wires, or connections.
- Keep cords and wires clear of places where a window, door, or furniture could pinch them.
- Turn the lights off when leaving home or going to sleep.
CPSC’s seasonal-lighting rule identifies missing minimum wire size, strain relief, or overcurrent protection as substantial product hazard characteristics. The rule does not itself create a consumer product safety standard or a blanket testing or certification requirement; it is not a substitute for checking the product’s label and following its instructions.
