Check your exact machine’s owner’s manual before setting the fence, adjusting the depth stop, or removing a guard. Then make multiple shallow passes, use push blocks as directed, and reinstall any removed guard immediately. If the manual rules out your stock or the rabbet dimensions, use another tool.
Check whether your jointer is suitable
A rabbet is a recess cut along the edge of a board so it can mate with another piece. A jointer with a rabbeting ledge may support the stock during this operation, but the ledge alone does not mean every rabbet or workpiece is safe to cut. Verify in your machine’s manual that it permits rabbeting and that the stock’s dimensions and intended rabbet are within its limits. Inspect the workpiece as the manual directs.
WOOD Magazine addressed a reader question from Stephen Vallery of Yardville, New Jersey, about using a 6-inch jointer with a rabbeting ledge. Its setup suggestions are useful context, not universal instructions: your jointer’s manual takes precedence.
Set up the machine and workpiece
- Read the rabbeting instructions for your model. Check the required fence position, stock orientation, allowable workpiece dimensions, depth stop, guard arrangement, and hand-clearance rules before changing the machine. Do not override a depth stop unless the manual specifically permits it.
- Set the fence to the required rabbet dimension. The fence position and how you orient the board determine the cut. WOOD Magazine describes setting the fence to establish the rabbet width with the board face down, or the rabbet depth with it on edge. Follow your own manual’s method and use the orientation that gives stable support.
- Check the ledge and cutterhead setup only as your manual instructs. WOOD Magazine advises checking that the knives extend 1/32 inch beyond the front edge of the outfeed table so the workpiece will not catch on the ledge. That measurement is not a universal adjustment specification; do not alter knife or table settings based on it if your machine’s manual says otherwise.
- Plan for tear-out. The ends of the knives are the area WOOD Magazine identifies as most likely to cause tear-out. Support the stock securely and use the feed direction and workpiece orientation specified by the manual.
Make the rabbet in shallow passes
- Set the infeed table for a shallow first cut, using the limit in your jointer’s manual.
- Feed the workpiece through with the required support and push blocks, keeping your hands clear of the cutterhead.
- Lower the infeed table between passes and repeat until the rabbet reaches the intended dimensions. Do not try to remove the full depth in one pass.
Pass limits vary by machine. The cited Grizzly G0526A40 and G0834 manuals both cap cutting depth at 1/8 inch per pass; the G0526A40 manual states, “For safety reasons, cutting depth should never exceed 1⁄8" per pass.” WOOD Magazine suggests approximately 1/8 inch for hardwoods and 1/4 inch for softwoods, but that softwood figure should not be treated as a general safe limit. Use the stricter requirement that applies to your exact machine and stock.
#1 Best Overall
- Spiral cutterhead system utilizes 12 staggered HSS blades for an ultra fine finish
- Features a spacious 30-by-6-inch table
- Remove 0 to 1/8 of an inch of material with each pass
- Adjustable 19-3/4 by 4-1/4-inch fence bevels up to 45 degrees
Keep the cutterhead guarded and your hands clear
Guard requirements differ by model. The Grizzly G0858 manual says the guard typically must be removed to let stock travel along the rabbeting ledge and requires reinstalling it immediately afterward. It also warns: “When the cutterhead guard is removed, attempting any other cut besides a rabbet directly exposes the operator to the moving cutterhead.” By contrast, the G0526A40 manual describes a model-specific method for workpieces up to 1 inch thick that may allow cutting on end with the guard installed. Neither procedure applies automatically to other jointers.
The Grizzly G0834 manual directs users to set the fence at 90 degrees, keep hands at least 4 inches from the cutterhead, lift and reposition a hand rather than pass it over the cutterhead, and use push blocks whenever practical. These are model-specific instructions, not a substitute for the safety rules in your own manual. A push block helps maintain control and distance; it does not make an otherwise unsuitable cut safe.
Rank #2
- Spiral Cutterhead - Cutterhead with 6 rows that holds staggered tungsten carbide inserts for a smooth finish. The design of the cutterhead along with the use of in-house made inserts make cuts with the lowest amp draw compared to others.
- Two-sided Inserts - Two-sided inserts sit in perfect alignment to the spiral cutterhead. Non-cutting edge designed to prevent insert from skewing while planing. The precision is superior to 4-sided inserts.
- Powerful 12-amp Motor - 20% boost! Large 12 amp motor, the most powerful compared to other benchtop jointers on the market. Highly effective in making aggressive cuts.
- Adjustable Large 24" x 6" Cast Iron Fence - Features quick stops at 90° and 135° for versatile cutting angles.
- Taller (8½") Fence Enhancement Brackets - Taller Fence Enhancement Brackets Designed For Cast Iron Fence For Increased Stabilization. (Patented in Taiwan.)
When to use another tool
If the manual says your stock or desired rabbet is outside the jointer’s suitable range—or you cannot maintain the required support and hand clearance—do not force the operation. The Grizzly G0526A40 manual names a table saw, router, or hand saw as alternatives. Choose based on the workpiece and the method you can use safely, and follow that tool’s manual and safety instructions.
Quick Recap
