Measure from one consistent reference, test your saw setup on scrap, dry-fit the whole frame, then glue and clamp it with even pressure.
What makes a mitered frame fit?
A rectangular frame has four corners and eight mitered cut faces. Each mating end is cut at 45 degrees to form a 90-degree corner. Small errors can accumulate across the cuts and show up as gaps; WOOD Magazine notes that inaccuracy across the eight cuts can quickly become visible (WOOD Magazine, updated March 6, 2025).
Good joints depend on both accurate angles and consistent lengths. A perfectly set saw will not compensate for mismatched sides, and equal sides will not close well if the angles are off.
Measure from a consistent frame reference
Measure the artwork or insert together with any mat or surround. Account for the frame’s rebate—the ledge that holds the insert—and the moulding width when deciding the frame’s inside and outside dimensions. Use the same reference point on every piece, such as the inside corner or rebate edge, and mark it clearly. Axminster’s picture-framing guide describes calculating the frame dimensions from the insert and moulding, then marking each piece from the centre so the inside corners are defined consistently (Axminster Tools, updated February 19, 2025).

- POWERFUL 15 AMP MOTOR - Delivers 4,800 RPM for quick, detailed cuts
- DUAL BEVEL – Perform cuts in four positive stop positions at 48° & 45° left, 0°, and 45° right
- LED SHADOW LINE - Provides high precision cuts with greater accuracy than lasers
- 2x12 CUTTING CAPACITY – Cross cuts lumber up to 2x12 at 90 degrees, and 2x8 lumber at 45 degrees
- CUTS AT COMMON ANGLES - Cuts up to 50 degrees left and right with 11 positive stops at most used angles
For repeated sides, use a stop or another fixed reference rather than measuring each piece independently. You can cut one long and one short side first to confirm that the layout and reference are working before cutting the remaining parts.
Choose and set up a cutting method
| Method | Useful when | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Hand miter box | You have a suitable box and can cut the stock steadily by hand. | Support the moulding so it sits consistently; check the cut rather than assuming the guide guarantees a perfect fit. |
| Powered miter saw | You have a saw that can make the required 45-degree cuts and safely support the stock. | Set and secure the angle, and hold the work against both table and fence. Use a clamp or fixture if the piece cannot be held safely by hand. |
| Tablesaw miter jig | You have a suitable jig and are comfortable setting up and using it. | A jig can help make repeatable cuts, but verify the actual fit; do not rely on a scale alone. |
Whichever method you use, make test cuts in scrap first. For profiled moulding, support the stock so it stays in the same orientation and is not damaged. The Stanley STSM1525 manual recommends securing the workpiece against the table and fence when cutting picture frames and other four-sided projects (Stanley Tools STSM1525 instruction manual). Keep your hands outside the blade hazard area, support long pieces, and use a clamp or fixture for stock that is difficult to hold securely.

Cut and check the matching sides
- Cut complementary ends. Each corner needs a left- and right-hand 45-degree cut. Keep the stock orientation and measurement reference consistent.
- Use a repeatable length reference. Set a stop or measure from the same marked reference for matching pieces.
- Check paired miters before assembly. Bring equal-length pieces together with their miters aligned and inspect whether the cut faces are flush. Logan Graphic Products recommends this check because non-flush faces can leave a gap when the corner is assembled (Logan Graphic Products, accessed October 8, 2026).
- Finish the remaining cuts. If the first long and short sides confirm the layout, cut the other pair using the same references.
Dry-fit and square the frame
Arrange all four pieces without glue. Check that every miter closes, the frame lies flat, and the assembly is square. Compare the diagonals or use a square to check the corners. A joint that opens or a frame that rocks is easier to diagnose before glue is applied. If using a frame clamp, position its corner brackets and adjust the joints before tightening.
Glue and clamp without crushing the corners
Spread a thin film of glue over the mating faces and assemble the frame on a flat surface. A band clamp with corner blocks or a purpose-made frame clamp can apply tension around the assembly. Tighten only enough to close the joints; too much pressure can crush the outside corners. Keep checking that the frame remains flat and square. If a joint needs adjustment, release some pressure before moving the pieces rather than forcing them to slide under tension. WOOD Magazine describes avoiding excess pressure during frame clamping (WOOD Magazine).

Using pinch boards and bar clamps
If you do not have a frame clamp, a pinch-board arrangement is an alternative described by Woodcraft Magazine. Crosscut two square boards a few inches wide and as long as the frame’s shortest inside dimension. Clamp them between the long rails, offset from the ends to leave room for glue squeeze-out, then clamp the miters together. With rabbeted stock, temporarily fill the rabbets on the long members if needed; otherwise the rails can cock under pressure (Woodcraft Magazine, published April 10, 2020; updated April 27, 2026).
Clean up and let the glue set
Remove glue squeeze-out and leave the frame clamped for the period specified on the glue manufacturer’s label. There is no single clamp time established for every glue and condition: Axminster specifies at least 24 hours for the picture-framing process shown in its guide, while WOOD Magazine directs readers to the glue’s cleanup and drying instructions. Follow the instructions for the glue you are using rather than applying one time universally (Axminster Tools; WOOD Magazine).

When to add joint reinforcement
A glued miter is not the only option for holding a frame corner together. Axminster describes using vee nails in picture frames, but reinforcement depends on the frame’s construction and the tools available. They are an option, not a requirement for every frame (Axminster Tools).
