What a HAMP blaster is
HAMP stands for “High Airflow Manual Plunger.” In Make:’s description, the operator moves a large manual plunger to push airflow that propels a foam dart; the design has no trigger. Make: published its overview by Keith Hammond on March 29, 2012, and relayed hobbyist Daniel Seyler’s description of the HAMP as “one of THE most basic homemade Nerf guns possible.” Read the Make: overview.
Materials and tools named in the overview
The Make: article points readers to an original NerfHaven tutorial and names PVC pipe, duct tape, and yarn as materials used in that tutorial. It attributes a drill and a saw as required tools. The overview does not state pipe diameter or length, quantities, a specific drill or saw type, or the dart-to-barrel fit.

This is not a complete shopping list or dimensioned plan. Check the original tutorial linked from Make: for its specifications before buying materials; do not choose pipe dimensions or substitute parts based on the overview alone.

What the available guide does—and does not—tell you
Make: is an overview that points to the original tutorial, not a complete build guide. It does not provide an assembly sequence, joining details, measurements, or verified compatibility with particular darts. Without those details, a reliable step-by-step construction procedure cannot be reconstructed from the overview. Follow the original tutorial for the build itself, and do not infer missing steps.
How to interpret the old cost and time estimates
The March 29, 2012 Make: overview relays estimates of less than an hour and less than $10 in supplies, attributed to hobbyist Daniel Seyler and referring to the original tutorial. These are historical, unverified estimates—not current prices, a controlled build-time measurement, or a promise that a present-day build will meet either figure.

Safety and responsible use
Do not aim foam-dart blasters at eyes or faces, and use protective eyewear. Hasbro’s official instructions for its Nerf Fortnite 6-SH retail blaster warn, “Do not aim at eyes or face,” and recommend eyewear for players and people within range. Those instructions address that retail product; they do not certify a homemade HAMP or establish that it has been tested safe.
Hasbro’s instructions also advise using official Nerf darts and not modifying darts or the retail blaster. That guidance is for Hasbro’s product, not a validation of homemade-blaster dart compatibility. JSPB3D, on a page about a separate air-powered blaster design, calls for adult use, full eye protection, and compliance with local laws and ordinances. Neither source establishes that a HAMP is safe or legally compliant. Check and follow applicable local rules.
