Supported Roborock robot vacuums can store separate maps for different floors, usually without moving the charging dock. The reliable process is to save a complete first map, enable the modelโs multi-floor mapping feature, then carry the robot to each additional floor and let it complete a mapping run.
Support, map limits, and app labels vary by model, firmware, and region. The standard Roborock S5, for example, saves only one map.

First, check whether your Roborock supports multiple floor maps
Multi-floor mapping is model-specific. Roborockโs official support article lists the S4, S4 Max, S5 Max, S6, S6 Pure, S6 MaxV, S7, S7 MaxV, S8, S8+, S8 Pro Ultra, Q Revo, Q8 Max, and Q5 Pro as supporting its multi-floor mapping process. This list may not cover every newer model or every firmware release, so check your robotโs model-specific support page and the map settings in the Roborock app.

Roborockโs U.S. app page advertises multi-level mapping for up to four floors, but also warns that features are not available on every product. Do not assume that every Roborock stores four floor maps.

The standard Roborock S5 is an important exception: Roborock says it can save only one map. When moved to another floor, it recreates the map, replacing the previous floorโs map, barriers, and no-go zones.
Also distinguish between multiple saved maps and multi-floor maps. Some older models were described as saving three maps, but that did not necessarily mean they could identify and manage three different floors. Roborock explains this distinction in its map-count FAQ.
Prepare before creating maps
- Pair the robot with the Roborock app and check for an available firmware update.
- Turn on Map Saving Mode.
- Keep the charging dock in a fixed location while creating the first map.
- Open every door to a room that should appear on that floorโs map.
- Remove cables, loose objects, and anything likely to trap the robot.
- For additional floors, choose a clear, level starting area away from stair edges and tight furniture.
These preparations matter because an incomplete first map can cause missing rooms, incorrect room divisions, failed floor recognition, or a later map being overwritten.

Create and save the first map
- Open the Roborock app and select your robot.
- Confirm that Map Saving Mode is enabled. The location of this control varies by model.
- Place the robot on its charging dock.
- Open the doors to all rooms that should be mapped.
- Start a complete cleaning or mapping run.
- Allow the robot to explore the entire accessible floor. Do not stop it after mapping only part of the home.
- Do not move the dock while the map is being created.
- Leave the robot undisturbed until it returns to the dock on its own and the map remains visible in the app.
Roborockโs official instructions use an S7 as an example and warn that the controls can differ between models and firmware versions. Treat the labels above as the intended functions, not a universal menu path. See Roborockโs official multi-floor mapping instructions if your screen uses different wording.
Enable multi-floor mapping
After the first map has been saved, open the robotโs map or map-management screen. Depending on the model, look for one of these equivalent controls:
- Multi-floor or Multi-level building layout
- Multi-floor maps
- Map management or Saved maps
- Create new map
On models following Roborockโs documented procedure, change the building layout to Multi-floor, or enable Multi-floor maps, then select Create new map and tap Create.

If there is no such option, do not repeatedly remap the home. The model may not support multi-floor mapping, the first map may not have been saved completely, Map Saving Mode may be off, or the current app and firmware may not expose the feature.

- Choose Create new map in the app and confirm with Create.
- Carry the robot to the next floor. Carry the robot only; the charging dock does not need to move upstairs.
- Place the robot on a clear, level section of floor with room to turn.
- Open the doors to the rooms you want included.
- Start the mapping or cleaning run from the app or robot.
- Avoid interrupting the robot while it explores.
- Let it finish and return to the place where the run began.
- Confirm that the new map appears and is retained in the app.
- Repeat for other floors, subject to your modelโs supported map limit.
Roborockโs official procedure says the dock is required for the initial map but not for additional maps. The robot can return to its starting point on the extra floor and store the map there. Carrying the dock upstairs is therefore unnecessary and may make the fixed-dock reference from the first map harder to maintain.
Use the saved maps afterward
- Carry the robot to the desired floor and place it in a clear area.
- Start cleaning from the app or the robot.
- Allow the robot to identify the floor and load the associated map.
- Before a full run, check that the displayed rooms, no-go zones, and cleaning settings belong to that floor.
Supported Roborock models can recognize the corresponding floor map after being moved without the dock. This is supported behavior, not a guarantee for every model or setup. Similar-looking floors, unsupported firmware, incomplete maps, or an ambiguous starting position can prevent reliable recognition.

After each map is saved, review the floor-specific settings, including room names and divisions, invisible walls, no-go zones, cleaning order, carpet behavior, and mopping settings. Roborock describes map editing features on its official app page.

| No multi-floor option appears | Verify the model, firmware, app version, and Map Saving Mode. The feature may have a different name, or the robot may not support it. |
| The second floor overwrites the first | The robot may support only one map, or multi-floor mode may not be enabled. The standard S5 supports one saved map. |
| Rooms are missing | A door may have been closed, or the run was stopped early. Recreate the map with all relevant doors open and let the robot complete the run. |
| The robot cannot locate itself | Place it on a clear, level area with space to turn. Confirm that the intended floor map was saved and that the floor layouts are not too similar. |
| The new map is not saved | Do not interrupt the run. On the first floor, let the robot return to the dock by itself. On additional floors, let it return to its starting point. |
| Room boundaries or no-go zones are wrong | Open the map editor and correct the floor-specific layout after the map has been successfully saved. |
If the first map is incomplete
Re-enable Map Saving Mode, return the robot to its dock, open all relevant doors, and run a complete mapping cycle without moving the dock or stopping the robot. Delete or reset the bad map only when necessary, since doing so can remove room divisions and floor-specific restrictions.
If automatic floor recognition keeps failing
First confirm that the model actually supports multi-floor mapping rather than merely storing multiple map states. Then check that every map was saved successfully. If the floors have nearly identical layouts, start the robot from a clear, consistent location and verify the loaded map before allowing a full cleaning run.

How many maps can a Roborock save?
There is no single limit for every Roborock vacuum:
- The standard S5 supports one saved map.
- An older Roborock FAQ says the S4, S6, and S5 Max could save three maps, while warning that saved maps were not automatically equivalent to separate floor maps.
- Roborockโs current U.S. app page advertises multi-level mapping for up to four floors on supported products.
The practical limit depends on the exact model, firmware, app, and regional feature availability. Confirm the limit in the robotโs support documentation rather than relying on a general Roborock map count.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every Roborock supports multi-floor mapping.
- Confusing three saved map states with three automatically recognized floors.
- Starting the first map away from the dock.
- Closing doors or stopping the robot before the entire floor is explored.
- Moving the dock while the first map is being created.
- Carrying the dock upstairs when the official process does not require it.
- Starting a full cleaning run before confirming that the correct floor map loaded.
If your model lacks multi-floor support, the alternatives are manual remapping, a second robot, or replacing the robot with one that explicitly supports multi-level mapping. Installing the Roborock app alone cannot add a feature that the robotโs hardware or firmware does not support.
