The show pointed toward homes with fewer phone-dependent interactions, more local control, smarter access, easier retrofits, and technology built into ordinary infrastructure—from door locks and house numbers to electrical panels.
This is a retrospective of TechHive’s CES 2025 picks, not a current buying guide or independent product test. Prices and launch dates below were announcements or forecasts reported in January 2025. What CES 2025 revealed about the smart home
The strongest products shared a clear direction: smart-home technology is moving out of the phone and into the physical home.
- Screens are reaching the front door. Doorbells and locks can show visitors directly, reducing the need to find a phone.
- Matter is becoming more practical. Products such as LIFX Luna use the standard for more than basic cross-platform compatibility, including local device-to-device control.
- Retrofit installation matters. SwitchBot’s doorbell and Pawport’s pet door were designed around existing homes rather than major remodeling.
- Security is becoming infrastructure. Firefly house numbers improve emergency visibility, while Savant’s system manages competing electrical loads.
- Readiness varies widely. The CES list mixed products with future launch targets, concepts, and even a component technology. “Interesting” did not necessarily mean “available.”

Best for smart-home interoperability: LIFX Luna
The LIFX Luna Smart Lamp stood out because its physical controls could do more than operate the lamp. It has 26 individually addressable color zones, 1,000 lumens, and four programmable buttons. Those buttons can control Luna or other Matter devices.
The important idea was Matter device-to-device binding: a button could potentially control another compatible device locally, without sending every action through the internet. That makes the lamp a useful example of Matter as an automation tool rather than merely a compatibility badge.
Luna initially used Wi-Fi for Matter. LIFX said it included a Thread-capable chip that would be activated later, but that future-dated statement should not be treated as confirmation of its current status.

Smart locks and doorbells: the most visible CES trend
SwitchBot Video Doorbell
The SwitchBot Video Doorbell paired a doorbell camera with a dedicated 4.3-inch indoor display. Its announced features included wired or battery operation, a 2K camera, color night vision, a 165-degree field of view, optional solar power, AI motion detection, and installation by adhesive or screws.
The display could be particularly useful for children, older adults, or anyone whose hands are occupied. Local storage of up to 512GB on the display was presented as a way to reduce dependence on cloud recording, although buyers should confirm whether storage is included and which functions remain available without an internet connection.

There is a material specification conflict in the original coverage: the main CES roundup described the doorbell as supporting 4K, while the dedicated follow-up described it as 2K. Until current manufacturer documentation resolves that discrepancy, it is more accurate to report the claims as conflicting than to choose one.

A wide field of view also does not guarantee useful package visibility. Mounting height, door position, lighting, battery behavior, weather resistance, notification reliability, and the security of a removable indoor display all matter more than a headline resolution.
Lockly Vision Prestige
The Lockly Vision Prestige combined a smart lock, integrated camera, and exterior and interior displays. Lockly announced a 2K camera, facial recognition, and real-time monitoring through its Home app, with a reported CES price of $499.99 and a fourth-quarter 2025 launch target.
Its appeal is consolidation: one installation could provide entry control, visitor visibility, and monitoring without a separate doorbell and indoor monitor. The trade-off is that more hardware at the door creates more possible failure points. A lock-mounted camera may have a worse angle than a dedicated doorbell, displays can increase power use, and facial recognition introduces privacy, consent, and false-match concerns.
Compatibility is also physical, not just digital. Check door thickness, backset, deadbolt spacing, trim clearance, strike alignment, weather exposure, and battery access before treating an integrated lock as a straightforward replacement.

Schlage Sense Pro
The Schlage Sense Pro represented a different approach: a Matter-enabled deadbolt using Thread, with Ultra Wideband proximity unlocking, NFC tap-to-unlock, and keypad PIN entry. Schlage announced support for Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings, but price and exact availability were still to be determined.

- Blanket a whole room - Motion sensors detect motion within 35 feet, have a 90 degree field of view and get along great with pets under 60lbs. Perfect for full room coverage when placed in a corner.
UWB could make entry more hands-free, but it is not universal automatic unlocking. It depends on compatible phones, operating systems, settings, ecosystem support, and reliable proximity detection. Matter-over-Thread also requires a suitable Matter controller and Thread border router.
Every smart lock should retain a dependable fallback—keypad, physical key, NFC, or another supported method. Door alignment is crucial: a stiff or misaligned deadbolt can stall the motor and drain batteries regardless of how advanced the wireless protocol is.
Best retrofit idea: Pawport Smart Pet Door
The Pawport Smart Pet Door was designed to fit in front of an existing pet door instead of requiring a complete replacement. An included Bluetooth collar tag can trigger automatic opening, while the app adds remote control and scheduled curfews. Adjustable sensitivity was intended to reduce accidental closing.
That makes it relevant to homeowners who want controlled pet access without rebuilding the door. The reported starting price was $499, with early-2025 availability targeted.
Before installation, measure the existing opening and check how the retrofit affects weather sealing, insulation, drainage, and the door’s structural finish. Also consider failure cases: a dead collar-tag battery, a pet that will not reliably wear the tag, multiple pets, an unfamiliar animal, loss of Bluetooth or internet access, and what happens during a power failure. Remote control is convenient, but it is not a substitute for inspecting the opening or maintaining a secure exterior barrier.
Most overlooked safety product: Glomensio Firefly Gen 2
The Glomensio Firefly Gen 2 turned house numbers into an emergency-visibility product. Its illuminated display supports Matter and Bluetooth, with announced features including green identification lighting for deliveries or rideshares, trusted-neighbor notifications, and flashing red and blue lighting after a 911 call.

- WIFI Network: WIFI connection, Only works on 2.4GHz WiFi network, does NOT support 5GHz WiFi networks.
- SMART ALARM SYSTEM for Home: tolviviov Alarm Security System is an affordable solution for your apartment security. You have full control over the door alarms for home security through your smartphone and get instant notifications of alarms alert in your house or apartment.
- CUSTOMIZATION: You can add extra door and window sensors, motion detectors, wireless doorbell, and water detectors to different rooms in your home security systems; It supports expansion of up to 20 sensors and 5 remote controls/keypads, which can be added to the WiFi alarm station.
- DIY INSTALLATION: Easily set up tolviviov Wireless Home Security System in minutes without tools. The wireless connection devices does not damage the wall. The alarm station should ALWAYS CONNECT to AC adapter. The backup battery works for 8 hours, only as an emergency battery.
- VOICE CONTROL: Your tolviviov Home Alarm System can be easily controlled by Away, Disarm, and Home modes with your voice.
The idea is valuable where an address is difficult to see from the street, particularly on a long driveway or poorly lit property. But it should be treated as wayfinding assistance, not as an alarm system or a guarantee that emergency responders will locate a home faster.

Before relying on the emergency feature, verify how the trigger is detected: it may depend on a phone, app, Bluetooth connection, or a specific integration rather than an independent cellular link. Confirm geographic coverage, consent and privacy settings for neighbor alerts, data retention, and whether the flashing colors have any official meaning for local responders. The reported CES price was $299 and the roundup described it as immediately available in January 2025; current model and firmware details require confirmation from Glomensio’s current information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Most consequential infrastructure product: Savant Smart Budget
Savant Smart Budget addressed a less glamorous but increasingly important problem: too many high-demand appliances competing for limited electrical service. The system was designed to manage circuits such as EV chargers, hot tubs, electric ranges, and dryers, switching selected loads off according to app commands or schedules.
In plain language, load management does not create more electrical capacity. It schedules or sheds competing loads so the home can avoid exceeding its service limits. That may help some homeowners delay a costly service upgrade. The original article cited an estimated $1,000–$1,500 in hardware plus installation and discussed possible avoidance of a $10,000–$15,000-or-more upgrade in some scenarios. Those are scenario-dependent estimates, not guaranteed savings.
This is not a DIY smart-plug project. A qualified electrician must confirm service-panel compatibility, circuit priorities, electrical code compliance, permits, utility requirements, EV-charger compatibility, and safe operation. Load shedding can interrupt charging or appliances, so homeowners should decide which circuits may be interrupted and how the system behaves after a power or communications failure.

The Aqara Panel Hub S1 Plus put a 6.9-inch touchscreen into the wall, with widgets, status indicators, and control for Aqara equipment plus other Matter- and Zigbee-enabled devices. It could function as a Zigbee or Matter hub.
Best Value
- Home Security Systems
A permanent panel can be more useful than a phone for household-wide control, especially when everyone needs to see lighting, sensors, or security status. It also creates a deliberate installation decision: unlike a portable tablet, an in-wall panel may require electrical work, affects the wall finish, and becomes a fixed point of failure.
The CES announcement described European availability in January 2025 and a later U.S. launch, without announcing a price. Confirm whether current versions require an Aqara account, which Matter device types are supported, which automations run locally, and what remains functional during internet, Wi-Fi, or hub failure. For some homes, a tablet or existing automation dashboard may provide more flexibility with less construction work.
Promising, but not central or ready to buy
- Direction9 TV keyboard: A concept using remote arrow keys and T9-style prediction for text entry on a television. The company was seeking manufacturers to license it, with no confirmed price or availability.
- InkPoster: An E Ink-style digital art display that reportedly used no power while maintaining a static image. That claim concerns the static display state, not every operating condition or the total system’s consumption. Reported sizes ranged from $599 to $2,400, with mid-spring 2025 targeted.
- Zero Breeze Mark 3: A portable, battery-powered air conditioner rated at 5,280 BTUs, weighing 22 pounds, with a 1,022Wh battery and claimed runtime of up to seven hours. Its reported price was $1,299.99. It is useful home technology, but not a core security product.
- xMEMS Sycamore: A silicon MEMS speaker component rather than a finished smart-home device. Its eventual price depended on the manufacturer that incorporated it.
How to assess a CES smart-home announcement
- Identify its readiness. Is it shipping, preorder, announced for a future date, a prototype, or a component?
- Separate compatibility from capability. Ask whether Matter support covers basic control only, and whether the product needs a hub, border router, account, or internet connection.
- Check failure behavior. Test or verify what happens when power, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, batteries, cloud services, or the phone are unavailable.
- Review installation constraints. Door hardware, wall wiring, weather sealing, service panels, permits, and replacement parts can determine whether a product is practical.
- Examine privacy. Look for cloud recording, local storage, biometric processing, account security, two-factor authentication, data retention, and household consent.
- Keep a fallback. Smart locks need a backup entry method; security cameras need a plan for lost connectivity; emergency products should supplement visible addresses, alarms, and a direct call to emergency services.
What this CES list does—and does not—prove
These were editorial CES-floor selections, not independently tested recommendations. The coverage does not establish long-term reliability, battery life, false-alert rates, video performance, installation difficulty, subscription costs, warranty quality, or continuing Matter support.
That distinction is especially important for products announced with 2025 launch windows. A delayed or revised product may have different specifications, pricing, app support, or regional availability. The original article’s “available now” language applied to its January 2025 publication date; it should not be read as confirmation of August 2026 stock or support.
For a construction or renovation project, the practical lesson is to evaluate the building interface first. A lock must fit the door, a panel must fit the wall and wiring, a load-management system must fit the service equipment, and a pet door or house-number system must preserve weather protection. The best technology is the one that remains safe and useful when the network is unavailable—not merely the one with the most impressive CES demonstration.
