Basic smart-home control, media searches, timers, reminders, calendars, lists, and general questions do not require a subscription. Google Home Premium adds features such as Gemini Live, advanced camera intelligence, and “Help me create” automation drafting.
Activation is not a universal switch: availability depends on your household, country, language, app version, device firmware, and rollout status. Most importantly, Google says upgrading changes compatible devices in the household from Google Assistant to Gemini for Home, and the household cannot currently switch back.

What “Google Home Gemini” means
Gemini for Home is not the same thing as installing the Gemini mobile app on a Nest speaker. Google uses several related products:

Check these requirements before activating
- A Google Account connected to a Google Home household.
- The latest version of the Google Home app.
- A supported country and language. The United States is listed for early access, but feature availability can vary by language and rollout.
- A compatible Google Home or Nest speaker or display with the required firmware.
- Working Wi-Fi and an internet connection.
- On Android, updated Speech Recognition and Synthesis software may be required.
For Google’s listed first-party devices, the minimum firmware is generally Cast firmware 3.76 or later for speakers and Fuchsia firmware 28 or later for displays. Availability on a supported device still does not guarantee that your household has received the rollout.
How to activate Gemini for Home
Use the activation notification
- Update the Google Home app.
- Open Google Home and look for the notification titled or described as “Introducing Gemini for Home.”
- Tap the notification, then tap Get started.
- Follow the prompts to upgrade the household.
- Review Google’s disclosures.
- Configure the voice assistant and response-filtering options when prompted.
- Test a basic command, such as “Turn on the living-room light,” or ask for the status of a device.
If you dismissed the notification
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Home settings.
- Look for the banner stating “Set up Gemini for Home for more natural conversations.”
- Tap Get started and complete setup.
If the banner is absent, Google may not have enabled Gemini for your household yet. The banner is not a manually forced setting.
Request early access
- Sign in to Google Groups.
- Open Settings → Global settings.
- Make sure “Add me to their groups” is enabled, then save the setting.
- In the latest Google Home app, tap your profile picture or initial.
- Go to Home settings → Early Access.
- Follow the enrollment instructions.
Gemini for Home early access is separate from the Google Home app’s Public Preview program. Joining one does not automatically mean you have joined the other. See Google’s current availability and setup guidance.
Important: the upgrade affects the whole household
Before tapping the final confirmation, make sure other household members understand the change. Google says compatible devices in the home—including devices added later—use Gemini for Home instead of Google Assistant after the upgrade. Google’s current documentation also says the household cannot switch back to Google Assistant.
Which speakers and displays work?
Google currently lists these devices for the complete Gemini for Home voice assistant, subject to firmware requirements:
- Google Home Speaker (2026)
- Google Nest Hub, second generation
- Google Nest Audio
- Google Nest Mini, second generation
- Google Nest Hub Max
- Google Nest Hub, first generation
- Google Home Mini, first generation
Google separately identifies older hardware—including the Google Nest Wifi point, Google Home Max, original Google Home, and some third-party speakers—as supporting most Gemini for Home features but not Gemini Live. “Works with Gemini” therefore does not necessarily mean “supports the full Gemini experience.”

Basic Gemini for Home functions are available without Google Home Premium. Depending on device, service, language, and rollout, these include:
- Turning compatible lights, plugs, thermostats, and other devices on or off.
- Adjusting supported device settings.
- Searching for and playing media.
- Setting alarms and timers.
- Managing calendars.
- Creating or using notes and lists.
- Setting reminders.
- Asking general questions and home-status questions.
Free access does not make every device or every command compatible. A manufacturer’s Google Home integration must expose the requested function, and some devices require a linked manufacturer account or a Matter hub.
What Google Home Premium adds
Google Home Premium is most relevant to households that use Nest cameras and doorbells, want Gemini Live, or want help drafting automations.

On Google’s U.S. subscription page, the Advanced plan was shown at $20 per month or $200 per year, with annual billing saving $40. This pricing signal was observed on August 18, 2026; verify the live page before subscribing. The supplied information does not establish a dependable Standard-plan price, so check Google’s current checkout page rather than relying on an estimate.
Google says a new household may receive a 30-day trial. Existing first-generation Nest Aware subscribers are described as mapping to Standard, while Nest Aware Plus subscribers map to Advanced. Connect and verify third-party devices
Gemini for Home controls devices already connected through Google Home. Google says the platform supports products from thousands of brands, but individual capabilities depend on the integration.

To check whether a manufacturer is supported:
- Open Google Home.
- Tap Add.
- Tap Link apps or services.
- Tap Works with Google.
- Search for the manufacturer.
If the partner does not appear, Google says it is likely incompatible. A device can also appear in Google Home while exposing only basic controls to voice commands.
Works with Google Home versus Matter
Works with Google Home devices generally use the manufacturer’s cloud integration. Matter is an interoperability standard, but Matter devices still need a compatible controller or hub. Google identifies products such as the Nest Hub, second generation, and Nest Mini as examples that can provide the connection for Matter devices.

Existing Works with Google Home products do not need to be replaced simply because Matter is expanding. For a new purchase, check Google’s compatible-device directory and verify the exact device type, required hub, and supported functions.
Commands that can make home management easier
Find devices without remembering exact names
Try questions such as:
- “Is the bedroom light on?”
- “What lights are on downstairs?”
- “Is the thermostat set to 68?”
Gemini’s conversational approach can reduce the need to remember rigid command patterns, but clear room names and device names still improve reliability.
Handle several actions in one request
For example: “Turn off the downstairs lights, lock the front door, and set the thermostat to 68.” For locks, garage doors, alarms, heating, and other safety-sensitive equipment, confirm each result in the Google Home app or on the device. Break the request into separate commands if an incorrect action could cause a problem.
Search for media descriptively
You may be able to request a song, show, or other media by describing it instead of remembering its exact title or artist. Media availability still depends on the linked service and region.

Ask follow-up questions
Where supported, conversational context lets you ask a second question without repeating every detail. The exact behavior depends on the device, account, language, and feature rollout.
Draft an automation
With Help me create, describe the intended behavior in the Google Home app. Gemini can draft an editable automation that you review, modify, and save. Treat the draft as a starting point—not proof that every trigger, condition, or action will behave exactly as intended.
Why a device may work in the app but not by voice
App control and voice control are not identical. Check the following:
- The device is assigned to the correct home and room.
- The correct Google Account and household are being used.
- The manufacturer account is linked and still authorized.
- The manufacturer’s integration exposes the requested function.
- The device type and requested feature are supported in your country and language.
- A Matter device has a compatible Google Home hub or controller.
- The device and Google Home system have a stable internet connection.
For advanced controls, scenes, diagnostics, firmware updates, and device-specific settings, the manufacturer’s app may remain the better tool.

Troubleshooting Gemini for Home
The activation banner is missing
- Update Google Home.
- Confirm that you are using the Google Account connected to the correct household.
- Check Home settings → Early Access.
- Confirm Google Groups allows “Add me to their groups”.
- Check speaker or display firmware.
- On Android, update Speech Recognition and Synthesis.
- Confirm your country and language are supported for the specific feature.
- Wait for the progressive rollout if Google has not enabled the household.
Do not rely on unofficial activation hacks. Google’s official troubleshooting and availability page is the appropriate reference when labels or eligibility change.
Gemini misunderstands a command
- Use the room name and device type.
- Rename ambiguous devices.
- Avoid duplicate names for multiple lights or plugs.
- Break safety-sensitive multi-step requests into separate commands.
- Confirm the result in Google Home.
- Use a saved routine for actions that must run in a fixed sequence.
The internet connection fails
Gemini for Home does not remove the cloud and network dependencies of a smart-home system. The Google Home app, Wi-Fi, internet access, remote control, automations, camera features, and notifications may all depend on connectivity. A subscription will not repair unreliable Wi-Fi or a broken manufacturer integration.

Privacy and accuracy considerations
Voice assistants process household information, while camera and doorbell features involve particularly sensitive data. Google states that it does not train generative AI models outside Google Home with personal data from Gemini for Home. You should still review Google’s disclosures and privacy settings before enabling camera summaries or other AI features.
AI descriptions, notifications, and summaries can be wrong. Do not rely solely on an AI interpretation when deciding whether a person, vehicle, package, alarm, lock, or other safety-critical event requires action.

Should you activate Gemini for Home?
Activate it now if you already have compatible Google Home hardware, want less rigid conversations, and accept a household-wide change that Google currently treats as irreversible. It is also more compelling if you want Gemini Live, camera intelligence, or conversational automation drafting and are comfortable checking Premium eligibility.
Wait or investigate first if your household depends on deterministic commands, dislikes AI-generated responses, uses an unsupported language or third-party speaker, or controls security-critical equipment. Existing Google Home routines remain the safer choice for fixed actions such as locking doors at bedtime, switching off a defined group of lights, setting a thermostat schedule, or triggering a security routine.
If you are building a new system, prioritize compatible devices and Matter support—but remember that Matter does not guarantee local control, universal compatibility, or flawless voice execution.
