Apple Ended Support for the Old Home Architecture—What Users With Older Devices Need to Know

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple’s Home architecture deadline has passed. Apple ended support for the previous Apple Home architecture on February 10, 2026. This was not simply an App Store update to the Home app: it was a migration affecting the home configuration, hubs, automations, shared users, and the Apple devices used to access the home.

If you still see an upgrade prompt, cannot access a shared home, or have an iPad serving as your only home hub, check the compatibility and troubleshooting steps below. Apple says some homes may have been upgraded automatically, but the result can differ depending on the devices and hubs in the household.

What Apple was asking users to upgrade

Apple’s reminder, reported on January 9, 2026, concerned the underlying Apple Home architecture introduced with iOS 16.2-era software—not merely the version of the Home app installed on an iPhone or Mac.

Apple describes the newer architecture as more reliable and efficient. It also supports capabilities associated with guest access, robot-vacuum support, Activity History, and continuing security and performance improvements. These benefits depend on the software, hub, accessories, and account configuration in each home.

Aqara Smart Home Hub M3 for Advanced Automation, Matter Controller, IR | Thread Border Router, Features Zigbee, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, PoE, Supports Apple HomeKit, Alexa, SmartThings, Home Assistant
  • [Multi-Protocol Hub with Matter Bridge] The M3 is a versatile hub supporting Aqara Zigbee and Thread devices. It integrates third-party devices into the Aqara Home app. Supports advanced Matter bridge functionality, enabling Aqara-exclusive scenes and signals to sync with Matter ecosystems such as Home Assistant for seamless integration. Supports up to 127 Aqara Zigbee devices (** Not third-party Zigbee devices) and 127 Thread devices (Repeaters are needed).
  • [Edge Compatibilities and Local Automations] The M3 serves as an Edge Hub, prioritizing local control and automation. Upon integration, it supersedes existing Aqara hubs, shifting the automations among them to local operation (Some cloud-based notifications still require internet). Upgrade-friendly, it supports migrating Zigbee devices from older Aqara hubs.
  • [Smart IR Blaster with Feedback and Learning] The 360°IR blaster not only sends commands but also provides accurate status updates by detecting traditional remote use. It connects IR air conditioning units to Matter, functioning as an AC thermostat when paired with an Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor. (Note: Only one AC device can be exposed to Matter. Functionality may vary based on the Matter integration app. For Apple Home exposure, use Matter integration instead of HomeKit.)
  • [Optimal Wired and Wireless Connectivity] Offering both wired and wireless solutions, the smart home hub M3 provides dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz) with advanced WPA3 security, and a Power over Ethernet (PoE) port. The addition of a USB-C port allows for mini-UPS and power bank connections, delivering unparalleled stability. (2A USB power adapter is not included. ) . Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M3 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
  • [Privacy-Focused with Encrypted Storage, Easy Setup and Versatile Placement] The M3 prioritizes privacy by excluding microphone or camera components. It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.

Apple’s current support documentation says support for the previous architecture ended on February 10, 2026. Apple warned that homes remaining on the older architecture could lose access, experience problems with accessories or automations, and miss security and performance updates. A home may also be upgraded automatically.

For background, see Apple’s current Home architecture support guidance and the original January 2026 reminder report.

Who should check their setup now?

  • The Home app still displays an upgrade or software-update prompt.
  • An older iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, or Apple Watch is used to control the home.
  • An iPad was previously being used as the home hub.
  • A spouse, roommate, caregiver, or other invited user cannot see the home.
  • Remote access, notifications, automations, scenes, or accessories stopped working.
  • The home is important for locks, alarms, heating, cameras, or accessibility and has not been audited since the migration.

Minimum software versions

Apple lists these minimum versions for Apple devices connected to an upgraded home:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Device Minimum software
iPhone iOS 16.2
iPad iPadOS 16.2
Mac macOS 13.1
Apple TV tvOS 16.2
Apple Watch watchOS 9.2

These are Apple’s documented minimums, not a guarantee that every device capable of installing them supports every current Home feature. A device below the relevant baseline may lose access to the updated home until it is updated. The requirement applies to the home owner and to people invited to control the home.

How to check or complete the migration

First update every Apple device connected to the home, including devices belonging to invited users. Then use the Home app:

  1. Open Home on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
  2. Tap or click the More button.
  3. Choose Home Settings.
  4. If you have more than one home, select the relevant home.
  5. Choose Software Update.
  6. Select Update Now and follow the onscreen instructions.

The expected confirmation is: “This home and all accessories are up to date.” Apple says all homes owned by the user are updated at the same time.

On a Mac, Apple documents the route as Home in the sidebar → More → Home Settings → Software Update → Learn More, followed by the onscreen instructions. Apple’s Mac architecture guide says the owner’s and shared users’ connected devices must be on current software before upgrading.

The important iPad change

An iPad can still open the Home app and control accessories, but Apple no longer supports iPad as a home hub on the latest architecture.

This matters if an old iPad was the only device providing remote access, automations, notifications, shared control, HomeKit Secure Video, or other hub-dependent functions. The iPad may continue to work as a local control screen while no longer providing the hub services the household relied on.

Apple’s current guidance requires a supported Apple TV or HomePod for hub-dependent features. Apple’s Mac documentation refers to an Apple TV fourth generation or later or a HomePod, but compatibility with particular current features can vary by model and software.

What happens to older accessories and Apple devices?

The migration does not mean every HomeKit accessory becomes physically obsolete. The more precise issue is access and infrastructure:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • An older iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, or Watch may no longer be able to access the updated home.
  • An invited user’s incompatible device can prevent that person from controlling the home even when the owner’s devices are current.
  • An iPad can remain a controller but cannot serve as the hub for the latest architecture.
  • A supported Apple TV or HomePod may be needed for remote access and automation features.
  • Individual accessories may also require manufacturer firmware updates or have separate network, Matter, Thread, or HomeKit compatibility requirements.

Do not assume that every accessory failure was caused by the architecture migration. An accessory can fail because of an offline hub, a network problem, outdated firmware, or a separate compatibility issue.

Troubleshooting common problems

No Software Update option appears

The home may already be current, particularly if the Home app reports “This home and all accessories are up to date.” Other possibilities include viewing a shared home rather than one you own, being signed in incorrectly, having no qualifying accessory, or looking at a Home app interface that differs by operating system.

If someone else owns the home, that owner may need to complete the migration. Check each home separately if you use multiple homes.

The update cannot be completed

  1. Update every owner device and every invited user’s device.
  2. Confirm that the Apple Account is signed in correctly.
  3. Verify Apple Account two-factor authentication.
  4. Verify that iCloud Passwords and Keychain is enabled.
  5. Confirm that a supported Apple TV or HomePod is available if hub-dependent features are required.
  6. Open Home Settings → Home Hubs & Bridges to identify the active hub.
  7. Restart the active hub and network equipment if Home reports a hub or software error.
  8. Temporarily review VPN or third-party security software that may interfere with local Home communication.
  9. Remove stale shared users and invite them again if appropriate.

Apple’s Home hub and software-error guidance recommends checking the active hub, updating it, restarting it, verifying network conditions, and reviewing VPN or security software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A user cannot see the home

Update the user’s device to the required software level, then check iCloud Passwords and Keychain and Apple Account two-factor authentication. Confirm that the person is viewing the correct home if multiple homes exist.

If the person is a shared user, the owner can remove that user and send a new invitation. Apple also recommends leaving a shared home or removing an empty home when it is no longer needed. These steps are troubleshooting measures, not guaranteed fixes for every account or network configuration. See Apple’s guidance for users who cannot view a home.

Automations or accessories stopped working

Check the likely cause in this order:

  • The controlling device is below the minimum operating-system version.
  • The home hub is outdated, offline, or unsupported.
  • An iPad was previously the only hub.
  • A shared user cannot access the new architecture.
  • The accessory needs a manufacturer firmware update.
  • The accessory or hub is not communicating on the local network.
  • A Matter or Thread device has a separate hub or border-router requirement.

Test the affected lock, light, thermostat, camera, scene, and automation individually. A completed architecture upgrade does not by itself prove that every accessory is compatible or connected.

  • Flexible Power & Small Size – Features a universal USB-A port for power and data, allowing connection to power banks, wall outlets, PCs, or routers for a simple and quick setup. The Hub M100's shaft can be adjusted within a 210-degree range, making its placement extremely flexible.

Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M100 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.

Do you need to buy new hardware?

Not necessarily. First determine whether the problem is an outdated controller, a missing hub, or a network or accessory fault.

Apple TV 4K

An Apple TV 4K may be appropriate when the household needs a supported home hub for remote access, automations, notifications, or shared control and does not already have a suitable Apple TV or HomePod.

HomePod mini

A HomePod mini is a smaller hub option for households that also want a smart speaker. It is not necessary if a compatible hub is already working, and it will not fix an unrelated network or accessory-firmware problem.

HomePod

A full-size HomePod can provide hub functionality as well as higher-end audio. It may be excessive if the only requirement is a basic Apple Home hub.

Replacing an older controller

If an essential iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV cannot meet Apple’s minimum software requirement, replacement may be necessary for that device’s role. Do not replace it until you confirm that it cannot be updated and that it is actually needed for Home access or hub functionality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple hardware prices and availability vary, so check the manufacturer’s current product pages rather than relying on an old price.

Final checklist

  • Update all Apple devices connected to the home.
  • Ask every invited user to update their device.
  • Verify Apple Account two-factor authentication.
  • Verify iCloud Passwords and Keychain.
  • Confirm that the home has a supported Apple TV or HomePod if hub features are required.
  • Check Home Settings → Home Hubs & Bridges.
  • Confirm that the Home app says “This home and all accessories are up to date.”
  • Test critical locks, alarms, lights, thermostats, cameras, scenes, and automations individually.

If you received an email reminder, avoid suspicious links. Open the Home app directly or go to Apple Support using a known address.
