A plug adapter cannot convert a 220/240-volt outlet to 110/120 volts. For a permanent lower-voltage receptacle, have a qualified electrician assess the circuit and determine the compliant installation. If you only need to run one appliance, check its rating plate first: it may support the available voltage already, or it may need a correctly rated transformer.
First, clarify the voltage you need
In the United States, household supply is nominally 120 volts at 60 hertz. “110V” is commonly used informally for this household voltage; modern U.S. supply is generally described as 120V. The exact voltage and circuit arrangement at a particular receptacle must be assessed on site.
Typical U.S. residential service has two 120V wires and a neutral. Standard 120V circuits use one of those wires; some larger-appliance 240V circuits use both wires and the neutral. A receptacle’s shape alone does not establish its wiring or what changes are safe. ESFI provides an overview of this residential system: ESFI home electrical safety.
Choose the solution for your goal

For one appliance, check its rating plate
- Find the appliance or power-supply input rating. Look for a label such as “INPUT: 110–240V.” That range indicates the input voltage it is rated to accept, but does not by itself establish that the appliance accepts every frequency or plug type.
- Check frequency compatibility. The U.S. supply is 60Hz. Confirm the appliance supports the frequency at the outlet; voltage compatibility alone is not enough.
- Use an adapter only for plug fit. Electrical Safety First explains that a travel adaptor “does not convert the voltage or frequency”: Electrical Safety First travel adaptor guidance.
- If voltage conversion is needed, verify capacity. Match the transformer or converter’s voltage output to the appliance and ensure the appliance’s power draw does not exceed the device’s maximum rating. Follow both manufacturers’ instructions. Do not assume a generic travel converter is suitable for continuous use or electronic equipment.
A portable transformer supplies a different voltage to the connected appliance within its rating; it does not change the building’s receptacle. There is no universal transformer size that can be recommended without the appliance’s electrical requirements.

For a permanent outlet, call a qualified electrician
A fixed receptacle conversion is building electrical work, not an adapter swap. ESFI states: “All outlet installation should be performed by a qualified electrician.” Ask the electrician to inspect the actual circuit and determine the appropriate compliant installation for the site.
The necessary conductors, overcurrent protection, grounding, receptacle, permits, and inspections cannot be determined from the outlet’s appearance or from general guidance. Requirements depend on the location and the code provisions adopted there. The NEC is commonly mandated through state or local law, and the applicable edition and approval requirements vary; consult a qualified local electrician or authority having jurisdiction rather than assuming one rule applies everywhere.

What not to do
- Do not treat a plug adapter as a voltage converter.
- Do not change a receptacle, repurpose conductors, or alter a breaker based on a general online description of a 220/240V outlet.
- Do not connect an appliance to a transformer whose voltage, frequency suitability, or capacity does not match its requirements.
