Yes, you can control many air conditioners with a phone—but the right method depends on how the AC receives commands. Use the manufacturer’s app if the unit has Wi-Fi, a phone with a verified infrared (IR) blaster if you only need nearby control, or a Wi-Fi IR controller if the AC has a conventional remote but no smart features. A wired central HVAC system generally needs a compatible smart thermostat instead.
First, identify how your AC is controlled

Check the AC’s model number, front panel, manual, box, and original remote for labels such as Wi-Fi, Smart, App, or a setup QR code. Do not assume every model in a product family has Wi-Fi; smart and non-smart versions can look almost identical.
Method 1: Use the manufacturer’s AC app
This is usually the best option when the AC already supports Wi-Fi. It normally provides the most complete model-specific control, including power, temperature, operating mode, and fan speed. Depending on the unit, it may also include swing, schedules, energy information, diagnostics, or firmware features.
- Find the exact AC model number.
- Install the manufacturer’s official app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
- Create an account or sign in if the app requires one.
- Put the AC into Wi-Fi pairing mode using the model’s manual.
- Connect your phone to the network required during setup. Many devices require a 2.4 GHz network.
- Add the AC in the app and assign it to a room.
- Test power, temperature, mode, and fan controls locally.
- Rename the unit clearly, such as “Bedroom AC,” especially if you have multiple systems.
App names, pairing steps, supported networks, account requirements, and available features vary by model and country. Confirm compatibility for the exact unit before buying an optional adapter or relying on remote access.

Examples of manufacturer apps
- LG: Compatible ThinQ-enabled air conditioners can be started or stopped and adjusted from a mobile device. LG also advertises Alexa and Google Assistant support for compatible models. Check LG air-conditioner compatibility.
- Midea: Compatible smart window AC models can be controlled with the SmartHome app on Android and iOS. See Midea’s smart window AC example.
- Daikin: Compatible network-enabled units can be operated through a Daikin smartphone app, including away-from-home operation when the required account and network setup are complete. See Daikin’s smartphone-control information.
Method 2: Use a phone with an IR blaster
A traditional AC remote sends infrared signals to a receiver on the indoor unit. A phone can replace that remote only if it has an actual IR transmitter or IR blaster. Installing a universal-remote app does not add infrared hardware to an ordinary phone.
Many iPhones and phones without dedicated IR hardware cannot transmit these commands. Check the phone manufacturer’s technical specifications rather than relying on an app listing.
How to set it up
- Confirm that your phone has an IR transmitter.
- Install a reputable remote-control app that supports air conditioners.
- Select the AC brand and model, or use the app’s code-search process.
- Point the phone’s IR emitter toward the AC’s receiver.
- Test the power command first, then temperature, mode, fan speed, and swing separately.
- Try another remote profile if power works but other functions do not.
Infrared needs a usable path between the transmitter and receiver. A thick phone case, poor alignment, strong sunlight, a blocked AC receiver, or incompatible remote codes can prevent commands from working.
Do not confuse a camera test with an IR blaster. A phone camera may show a flashing light from an existing remote, proving that the remote is transmitting. It does not prove that the phone itself can transmit infrared. LG notes that some phones, including certain iPhones, may also be unsuitable for camera-based IR testing. Method 3: Add a Wi-Fi IR controller
For a regular remote-controlled AC without built-in Wi-Fi, an external Wi-Fi IR controller is usually the most practical solution. The small powered device connects to your home network and sends infrared commands to the AC when you use its phone app.

Basic setup
- Confirm that the original AC remote works.
- Choose a compatible Wi-Fi IR controller.
- Install its official app and plug the controller into power.
- Place it facing the AC’s infrared receiver with a clear line of sight.
- Connect the controller and phone to the required Wi-Fi network.
- Select the AC brand and remote profile, or let the controller detect it.
- Test power, temperature, mode, fan, and swing one at a time.
- Enable schedules, geofencing, or voice control only after basic commands work reliably.
Sensibo
Sensibo describes its products as IR blasters that replicate AC remote signals. Its compatibility information covers many window, portable, split, high-wall, cassette, and central systems that use wireless IR remotes. The AC must have a working remote and the controller must be able to reach the unit by infrared. Check Sensibo compatibility.
Sensibo Air supports iOS, Android, and web access over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Its listed features include remote control, schedules, geofencing, and integrations with Alexa, Google Home, Apple Siri, SmartThings, IFTTT, and an API. Sensibo lists up to 6 metres (20 feet) of line-of-sight range for Air and Sky; treat that as a vendor specification, not a guarantee for every room. See Sensibo Air.
Cielo Breez
Cielo says Breez Plus and Breez Lite can control power, temperature, mode, fan speed, and swing through the Cielo Home app. Depending on the model, the app may also provide schedules, geofencing, triggers, groups, usage statistics, and filter-status reminders. Can a smart plug replace an AC remote?
Usually no. A smart plug controls electricity; it does not reproduce the AC remote’s temperature, mode, fan, or swing commands. It also normally cannot report the AC’s true operating state.

A plug may work as a limited power-cycle workaround only if the AC automatically restarts after power is restored and remembers its previous settings. The plug must also be rated for the unit’s continuous load and startup demands. Portable and window ACs can have significant compressor startup loads, so do not repeatedly cut power as a default control method. Verify the AC’s restart behavior and electrical rating first.
How to control central air conditioning from a phone
Central systems fall into two different categories:
- Wired wall thermostat: Use a compatible smart thermostat. Compatibility depends on the HVAC wiring, power requirements, heat-pump configuration, and system type. Do not connect a thermostat to unfamiliar wiring without checking compatibility; professional installation may be appropriate.
- Wireless IR remote: An IR controller may work if the indoor unit receives the same type of infrared signal. Sensibo lists some central systems with wireless remotes, while Cielo says its Breez controllers are not for central HVAC systems controlled only by a wired thermostat. What if you no longer have the AC remote?
Most phone-based IR solutions need a working original remote, or at least a compatible replacement, to identify and test the correct command set. Sensibo specifically requires a working infrared remote for its compatibility model. Check the requirement.
Your options are to obtain the manufacturer’s replacement remote, buy a compatible universal AC remote, check for an optional official Wi-Fi adapter, or use the unit’s physical buttons for basic operation. An app cannot automatically operate physical buttons.
Troubleshooting phone-based AC control
The app pairs, but the AC does not respond
- Move the controller into clear line of sight of the AC receiver.
- Check that the receiver is not covered and that the device is within the recommended range.
- Test the original remote and replace its batteries if necessary.
- Confirm the correct brand, model, room, and remote profile.
- Reduce bright sunlight or nearby infrared interference.
The AC turns on but the settings are wrong
Many AC remotes transmit a complete state—power, mode, target temperature, and fan setting—rather than one isolated instruction. A third-party controller may not support every proprietary function or may need synchronization.

- Use the original remote to set a known state.
- Re-run pairing or choose another remote profile.
- Test one setting at a time.
- Compare the app’s reported state with the AC’s display and actual operation.

Wi-Fi pairing fails
- Use a 2.4 GHz network during setup when required; Sensibo specifically documents this for installation.
- Avoid hotel or apartment networks that require a captive-portal login.
- Disable client or access-point isolation if it prevents device registration.
- Check phone permissions, including Bluetooth and location access where requested.
- Temporarily check VPN, proxy, enterprise authentication, and internet access.
- Keep the controller powered throughout pairing.
Once setup succeeds, test local control before trying commands from outside the home.
The controller is offline or remote access fails
Away-from-home control requires the AC and controller to have power, the home Wi-Fi and internet connection to be working, and the app’s account or cloud service to be available. A local IR phone app will not work from another location. Cielo states that remote operation requires both the phone and Breez device to be connected to the internet. You have multiple AC units
Plan for one compatible controller per AC or indoor unit unless the manufacturer explicitly supports your configuration. Name rooms carefully and avoid sending conflicting commands to multiple zones. Sensibo states that one unit is needed per AC or heat pump. See Sensibo’s multi-unit information.

For most owners of a conventional remote-controlled AC, a Wi-Fi IR controller is the practical middle ground. If the AC is already Wi-Fi-enabled, use its official app. If you only need local control and your phone genuinely has an IR blaster, a compatible IR app may be enough. Keep the original remote available for setup and emergency control.

Voice control
Compatible manufacturer apps and IR hubs may connect to Alexa, Google Home or Assistant, Apple Siri or Siri Shortcuts, Samsung SmartThings, and IFTTT. Sensibo documents Google Home commands for power, temperature, and cooling or heating mode, while Cielo lists Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri Shortcuts, SmartThings, and IFTTT for compatible Breez products. Voice assistants may expose fewer controls than the manufacturer’s app.
Before relying on phone control for a vacant property, test schedules and temperature limits locally. An app’s “off” status is not always proof that the AC is physically off, especially if the device is offline or an IR command was blocked.

Can I control an AC with an iPhone?
Yes, if the AC supports an official Wi-Fi app or you add a compatible Wi-Fi IR controller. Most iPhones do not have a user-accessible IR transmitter, so an iPhone cannot usually act as a direct traditional infrared remote.
