What “works with Apple Home” means
Leak sensors reach Apple Home through three different routes:

- [Notes] An Aqara Hub is required and sold separately. Not compatible with hubs from other brands. Requires a secure 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection for Hub M2, M1S, E1, M1S Gen2, G2H Pro, and G2H; or 2.4/5GHz Wi-Fi for Camera Hub G3. (Hub M2 also supports wired Ethernet via RJ45.). Pair the Zigbee Water Leak Sensor with an Aqara Hub before connecting to Apple HomeKit, Google Home, or Alexa. For a stable Zigbee connection, ensure the sensor is placed within 10 meters(33 ft) of the Aqara Hub.
- [Proximity] To ensure a stable connection, keep the Aqara Water Leak Sensor within 400 inches (approximately 10 meters) of the Aqara Zigbee Hub, and place the hub within the same range of your Wi-Fi router. Ensure both are connected to the same local area network (LAN). Zigbee2MQTT and comparable third-party USB dongles are not officially supported by Aqara. Full product functionality may be limited or unavailable.
- [Drip and Leak Detection] Equipped with highly sensitive probes that detect water levels as low as 0.5 mm (approximately 0.02 inch), this water leak detector instantly sends alerts to your phone and triggers the local alarm on the Aqara Hub whenever a leak is detected.
- [Home automation] The water leak detectors for home can control and trigger other Aqara devices when water is detected, allowing you to take prompt action to keep your home safe. ***Requires Aqara Hub, not third-party hub.
- [Wireless & Compact Design] No wiring or screws are required. The small, sleek design allows you to place the Zigbee leak sensor on any flat surface in your kitchen, basement, laundry room, or any area you want to monitor. Recommended placements include near or under toilets, water heaters, washing machines, dishwashers, sinks, fish tanks, sump pumps, or any area prone to leaks.
- Native HomeKit: The accessory is designed to be added directly to Apple Home using its HomeKit code.
- Matter: The sensor can be added to Apple Home as a Matter accessory, but Matter-over-Thread products still need a compatible Matter controller and Thread Border Router.
- Manufacturer bridge: A sensor such as Aqara’s communicates with its own hub. The hub then exposes the sensor to Apple Home.
A standalone alarm is different again. It may beep when its contacts become wet, but it cannot provide Apple Home notifications or automations without a compatible controller, hub, or network path.
The complete signal path is:
Sensor → Bluetooth, Thread, or Zigbee → hub or controller → Apple Home → notification or automation.
Understanding that chain prevents the most common buying mistake: assuming that the words “HomeKit,” “Matter,” or “Thread” mean the same thing for every product.
Best overall: Eve Water Guard
Eve Water Guard is the strongest choice for most Apple-focused households because it combines a direct Apple-oriented experience with a design that covers a useful area. Apple’s U.S. listing showed it at $99.95 on August 16, 2026.
Why it stands out
- A supplied 2-meter/6.5-foot sensing cable detects water along its length rather than only beneath one small puck.
- Apple lists a 100 dB siren, giving people in the home a chance to hear a leak even if a phone is muted or offline.
- It uses Bluetooth and Thread and does not require a dedicated Eve hub.
- It is designed for Apple Home and supports notifications and automations through the appropriate Apple home-hub setup.
The cable is the important differentiator. Run it through a washing-machine tray, along the front of a utility-room wall, beneath a long kitchen cabinet, or around a likely basement pooling area. Eve says the cable can be extended up to 150 meters, but that refers to optional extensions; the included cable is approximately 2 meters.
Limitations
Water Guard is mains powered, so it needs a nearby outlet and may stop operating during a power outage unless the relevant circuit and network equipment have backup power. Eve says a HomePod or Apple TV acting as a home hub is required for remote control and automations. A working Thread/Bluetooth and Apple Home setup is therefore still necessary for dependable away-from-home alerts.
Also confirm the exact retail model and firmware. Apple’s current listing includes Matter over Thread, but older inventory should not automatically be assumed to have identical Matter behavior.
Best compact choice for existing Aqara users
The Aqara Water Leak Sensor is a small, battery-powered point sensor that makes the most sense when an Aqara hub is already installed. Aqara says the original sensor is IP67-rated, detects water at approximately 0.5 mm, and can operate for more than two years under normal usage on one battery. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independently verified guarantees.

- Eve Water Guard requires iPhone or iPad with the latest version of iOS/iPadOS
- Avoid expensive water damage: Eve Water Guard detects water leaks and alerts you the moment they occur – acoustically and visually with a loud siren (100 dB), red flashing warning light, and notification sent to your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch.
- 6.5 ft / 2 m sensing cable serves as a full-length sensor for monitoring large areas of your room, extendable up to 490 ft / 150 m.
- Perfect for the bathroom, utility room, basement and beneath sinks and near water pipes.
- Joins your Thread network automatically (supports Bluetooth and Thread), and as a router node the accessory enhances the stability and reach of your smart home; HomeKit-enabled for unparalleled ease of use and advanced security; get up and running in a flash with a quick & easy setup and no need for a bridge or gateway
Aqara also sells the Water Leak Sensor T1. The T1 communicates with an Aqara hub over Zigbee. Do not assume the original sensor and T1 are interchangeable: check the exact regional model, packaging, and hub compatibility before ordering. Aqara identifies distance from the hub, low battery, metal interference, and exceeding the hub’s accessory limit as possible causes of an offline sensor.
Aqara is a poor fit for someone who wants a hub-free Apple installation. It is a good fit for someone who already owns Aqara devices, wants several inexpensive compact sensors, or intends to combine leak detection with Aqara valve-control equipment.
Best budget Matter-over-Thread option: IKEA KLIPPBOK
IKEA KLIPPBOK is the price leader. Its U.S. list price was $9.99 on August 16, 2026, with two AAA batteries sold separately. IKEA states that it uses Matter over Thread and is compatible with Apple and other Matter-supported smart-home systems.
That price is compelling if you already have the required infrastructure. IKEA says a Thread Border Router is needed for control through a phone, and Apple Home use for its Matter devices requires a HomePod or Apple TV as the controller. DIRIGERA is not necessarily mandatory for a third-party Apple Home setup, although IKEA recommends it for a simpler IKEA-centered system.
KLIPPBOK is a point sensor with an underside alarm. Its manual says the alarm sounds continuously for five minutes after the contacts detect water, then changes to spaced intervals until the battery runs out or the contacts dry.
IKEA’s product page contains mixed customer reports, including reports of devices going offline or requiring battery removal. These are anecdotal reviews, not a measured failure rate. They are nevertheless a reason to buy and test one sensor before deploying a large number of them. KLIPPBOK is attractive for a kitchen sink, toilet, water heater, or sump pump—not for a long washing-machine tray or basement perimeter where cable coverage is more useful.
Best option for automated water shutoff
No leak sensor shuts off a home’s water supply by itself. Detection, notification, and mitigation are separate functions:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- The sensor detects water.
- Apple Home or the manufacturer app sends an alert or starts an automation.
- A separate valve controller physically closes a compatible water valve.
Aqara explicitly describes pairing its Water Leak Sensor with the separately sold Aqara Valve Controller T1. This makes Aqara the clearest ecosystem choice for an automated-shutoff project, but it is a system recommendation—not a feature of the sensor alone.
Before installation, verify the valve type, plumbing compatibility, available power, enclosure location, manual override, and fail-safe behavior. Automatic shutoff may require professional plumbing or electrical work. A leak sensor and valve controller also do not replace properly installed hoses, appliance pans, sump-pump maintenance, or a whole-home leak-prevention system.

Cable sensors versus point sensors
Choose a point sensor when
- The likely leak is concentrated in one small area.
- You need a battery-powered device under a sink or behind a toilet.
- You want several sensors at a lower per-location cost.
- The sensor can sit at the lowest point where water will collect.
Typical locations include sink cabinets, dishwasher connections, refrigerator ice makers, toilet supply lines, water heaters, sump pumps, and HVAC condensate drains.
Choose a cable sensor when
- Water may pool several inches away from the main unit.
- You are covering a washing-machine tray or long cabinet run.
- A basement wall or utility-room perimeter is at risk.
- You want one continuous sensing surface rather than several separate pucks.
One cable sensor cannot detect every leak in a basement. Water can travel behind walls, beneath flooring, or to a low point outside the cable’s path. For large or irregular spaces, use multiple strategically placed sensors.
Where to place leak sensors
- Kitchen sink: Put a point sensor at the lowest part of the cabinet, near supply and drain connections. Keep the alarm audible and avoid placing it where a small drip cannot reach the contacts.
- Dishwasher: Place the sensor where a supply-line or drain leak will pool, while following the appliance and sensor manufacturers’ placement guidance.
- Washing machine: Use Eve’s sensing cable around the tray or use a point sensor at the lowest pooling point. A smart plug cannot stop a pressurized supply line from leaking.
- Water heater: Place a sensor near the lowest point of the pan or floor. Do not place it directly beneath electrical equipment unless permitted by the manufacturer and safe for the installation.
- Toilet: Place a point sensor near the supply connection and behind the bowl where water is likely to collect.
- Refrigerator: Monitor the ice-maker line or the lowest accessible area behind or beside the appliance.
- Basement: Cover sump-pump areas, foundation walls, utility-room edges, and other low points. Use cable coverage or multiple pucks rather than relying on one central sensor.
- HVAC condensate drain: Place the sensor near the pan or drain path where an overflow will first become detectable.
- Boiler or utility room: Use a sensor near the lowest safe point and ensure the local alarm can be heard.
Keep Aqara sensors away from metal surfaces where possible; Aqara lists metal interference as a possible cause of offline behavior. All sensors should remain within the effective range of their hub or Thread mesh, and their contacts should face the area where water will collect.
HomePod and Apple TV requirements
Do not treat “needs a hub” as one universal rule. The requirement depends on the product and protocol.
For Eve, a HomePod or Apple TV is required for remote control and automations. IKEA says Apple Home control of KLIPPBOK and its other Matter devices requires a HomePod or Apple TV controller, plus the appropriate Thread Border Router. Aqara requires its own hub to expose the sensor to Apple Home; remote Apple Home behavior still depends on the Apple Home setup.
At home, a device may appear reachable over a local network even when remote access is unavailable. Away-from-home notifications and reliable automations require the relevant controller, hub, network, and notification settings to remain operational.
How to enable Apple Home leak notifications
- Add the sensor to Apple Home with its HomeKit or Matter code, or add the manufacturer hub first when the sensor is bridged through Aqara.
- Assign the sensor to the correct room.
- Open the accessory’s details in Apple Home.
- Open Status and Notifications, or the equivalent notification control shown by the current iOS release.
- Enable alerts and choose whether they apply when people are home, away, or during specific times.
- Test the sensor with a small amount of water.
- Dry the contacts completely and confirm that the leak state clears.
- If remote alerts matter, repeat the test with the phone away from the home.
Aqara documents a similar path as touching and holding the device, choosing Details, then Status and Notifications, and enabling Allow Notifications. Labels can vary by iOS version.
Useful automations
- Leak detected → send notifications to household members.
- Leak detected → turn on utility-room or hallway lights.
- Leak detected → announce the leak through a compatible speaker or siren.
- Leak detected → close a compatible water valve.
- Leak detected → turn a status light red.
- Leak detected → trigger a supported camera or recording automation.
Use caution with smart plugs. Cutting power to a washing machine may be appropriate only when the appliance and plug manufacturer permit it, and it will not stop water flowing through a pressurized supply line.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to test a leak sensor properly
- Test the local alarm and confirm that it is audible from nearby living areas.
- Confirm that Apple Home changes the sensor to a leak or water-detected state.
- Confirm that the phone receives the expected notification.
- Test each automation separately.
- Dry and clean the contacts.
- Confirm that the alert clears in Apple Home and the vendor app, if applicable.
- Move the sensor to its final position and test again there.
- For remote protection, repeat the test with the phone away from home.
Schedule periodic checks. A sensor that is offline, has a depleted battery, or has lost its hub connection is not providing meaningful protection.

Troubleshooting an offline sensor
- Check the sensor’s last-seen status and battery level.
- Confirm that the Apple home hub, Aqara hub, or Thread Border Router has power.
- Move the sensor closer to the hub or improve the Thread mesh with suitable powered devices.
- Remove metal obstructions and avoid placing Aqara sensors directly on metal.
- Check for firmware updates.
- Remove and reinstall the battery if the manufacturer’s instructions allow it.
- Confirm that the exact Aqara model is supported by the hub and region.
- For Matter devices, verify that the device was added to the intended Matter controller and that the Thread network is functioning.
Thread does not mean “no hub.” It usually means the product avoids a dedicated manufacturer hub, while still requiring a Matter controller and Thread Border Router for smart-home control.

Which one should you buy?
- Buy Eve Water Guard for the best all-around Apple Home experience, a loud local alarm, or broad-area cable detection.
- Buy Aqara if you already have an Aqara hub, want compact battery sensors in several rooms, or plan a compatible automated-shutoff system.
- Buy IKEA KLIPPBOK if the $9.99 sensor price matters most and you already have a suitable Apple Home and Thread setup. Test one before buying many.
For a construction-minded protection plan, place sensors at each high-risk water source rather than expecting one device to cover an entire house. Choose coverage first, then protocol, then price.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do HomeKit leak sensors need a HomePod or Apple TV?
For Eve Water Guard and IKEA KLIPPBOK, a HomePod or Apple TV is required for the documented remote-control and Apple Home controller functions. Aqara additionally requires an Aqara hub. Requirements can vary by product, protocol, and current software.
Is Matter better than HomeKit for a leak sensor?
Matter can make a sensor easier to use across multiple smart-home ecosystems, but it does not eliminate the need for a controller or, with Matter-over-Thread products, a Thread Border Router. Direct HomeKit may be simpler for an Apple-only household.
Can Apple Home shut off water automatically?
Only when paired with separate compatible valve hardware. The sensor detects water; it does not close the supply by itself. Aqara specifically describes using its sensor with the separately sold Valve Controller T1.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can one sensor cover a whole basement?
No sensor guarantees whole-basement coverage. Water may travel behind walls or beneath flooring. Use cable coverage along likely paths and multiple point sensors at separate low points.
Do leak sensors work without Wi-Fi?
A local alarm may continue to work without internet or Wi-Fi, depending on the product. Apple Home notifications and remote access require the relevant hub, controller, local network, and internet path.
How many leak sensors should a house have?
Use at least one at each significant risk location—such as sinks, appliances, water heaters, toilets, sump pumps, and utility equipment—rather than relying on one sensor for the entire home.
Are Aqara sensors compatible with Apple Home without an Aqara hub?
No. The original Aqara Water Leak Sensor and Water Leak Sensor T1 communicate through an Aqara hub before appearing in Apple Home.
Does IKEA KLIPPBOK need an IKEA hub?
Not necessarily. IKEA states that KLIPPBOK uses Matter over Thread and can work with compatible systems without DIRIGERA, but it still needs an appropriate Thread Border Router and Matter controller. Apple Home use requires a HomePod or Apple TV controller according to IKEA.
