Choose the connection that matches your ports
| TV output | Soundbar input | What you need | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth audio | Bluetooth | Nothing extra | Possible delay, pairing, and remote-control limitations |
| 3.5 mm headphone or audio out | AUX, Line In, Analog In, or 3.5 mm | 3.5 mm stereo cable | Analog stereo; TV-speaker behavior varies |
| Red-and-white RCA audio out | RCA or AUX | RCA cable or RCA-to-3.5 mm cable | Analog stereo; connectors must be outputs and inputs |
| 3.5 mm or RCA audio out, but no TV Bluetooth | Bluetooth | Bluetooth transmitter in TX mode | Requires power and may add audio delay |
| Digital coaxial audio out | Analog input | Digital-to-analog converter | Requires the correct converter and settings |
If the TV has Bluetooth audio, try that first for a cable-free setup. If it does not, a wired 3.5 mm or RCA connection is usually the simplest dependable solution. A Bluetooth transmitter is useful when the TV has analog audio out but the soundbar has only Bluetooth.
1. Connect the TV directly to a Bluetooth soundbar
Bluetooth is the cleanest option when both devices support Bluetooth audio. Do not assume that a TV with Bluetooth can send sound: some televisions use Bluetooth only for remotes, keyboards, or game controllers. The TV must support a Bluetooth audio profile such as A2DP, and the soundbar must accept Bluetooth audio.
Typical pairing steps
- Turn on the soundbar and put it into Bluetooth pairing mode. This may require pressing a Bluetooth, Source, or Pair button on the soundbar or remote.
- On the TV, open the sound, Bluetooth, accessories, or external-device menu. Depending on the TV, the path may resemble Settings > Sound > Sound Output > Bluetooth Speaker List or Settings > Remotes & accessories > Pair accessory.
- Select the soundbar from the list of available devices.
- Change the soundbar’s source to Bluetooth, BT, or TV Bluetooth if it does not switch automatically.
- Play a TV program and test the volume and lip-sync.
The exact menu labels depend on the TV’s brand, operating system, and model. A TV may also connect to only one Bluetooth audio device at a time. Pairing the soundbar can disconnect Bluetooth headphones or another speaker.

Bluetooth problems to expect
- Audio delay: Voices may not match lip movement. Look for a TV or soundbar setting named Audio Delay, AV Sync, or Lip Sync. Some combinations cannot eliminate the delay completely.
- Unstable sound: Wireless interference, distance, or device compatibility can cause dropouts.
- Limited TV-remote control: Some soundbars do not support volume control from the TV remote over Bluetooth. You may need the soundbar’s remote.
- No simultaneous TV speakers: Bluetooth normally becomes a separate audio route. Do not assume the internal speakers and soundbar will play together.
If Bluetooth pairs but produces no sound, verify that the TV’s selected audio output is the Bluetooth soundbar—not the internal TV speakers—and that the soundbar is on its Bluetooth input.
2. Use the TV’s 3.5 mm headphone or audio output
A headphone jack or stereo 3.5 mm audio-out jack can connect directly to a soundbar’s AUX, LINE IN, ANALOG IN, or 3.5 mm input. This is often the easiest wired method.

What you need
Use a standard 3.5 mm stereo audio cable when both devices have 3.5 mm sockets. Check that the cable is intended for stereo audio, not a specialized headset or microphone connection.
Setup
- Connect one end of the 3.5 mm cable to the TV’s headphone or audio-out jack.
- Connect the other end to the soundbar’s AUX, Line In, Analog In, or 3.5 mm input.
- Press the soundbar’s Source or Input button and select AUX, Analog, or Line.
- Open the TV’s sound settings and select the headphone, wired speaker, external speaker, or analog output option if the TV requires it.
- Play audio. Set the TV’s volume high enough to provide a clean signal, then use the soundbar for normal volume control if the TV permits a fixed or variable output.
Connecting to a headphone jack may mute the TV’s internal speakers. On some televisions, the TV remote controls the headphone output level; on others, the output is fixed or can be configured as fixed or variable. The behavior and menu names are model-specific.
This connection carries analog stereo audio. It does not provide HDMI-CEC device control, and it should not be expected to carry Dolby Atmos or other multichannel formats from the TV to the soundbar.
3. Connect red-and-white RCA audio
Older and budget televisions sometimes provide red-and-white RCA audio outputs. These can connect to a soundbar with RCA inputs, or to a soundbar with a 3.5 mm AUX input.
Match the cable to the ports
- RCA out on the TV to RCA in on the soundbar: use a red-and-white stereo RCA cable.
- RCA out on the TV to 3.5 mm AUX in on the soundbar: use a 3.5 mm to RCA stereo cable.
- 3.5 mm out on the TV to RCA in on the soundbar: use a 3.5 mm-to-RCA stereo cable in the opposite direction.
After connecting the cable, select RCA, AUX, Analog, or Line on the soundbar. In the TV’s sound menu, choose the external, analog, or audio-out option when necessary.

Check the direction of every port. A TV may have RCA inputs for a DVD player or game console without having RCA outputs. The labels may say Audio In, Audio Out, AV In, or Monitor Out. Only an audio output can send TV sound to the soundbar.

Also, do not confuse the yellow RCA connector with the red and white audio connectors. Yellow is composite video. Red and white carry the left and right stereo audio channels.
4. Add a Bluetooth transmitter to an analog-output TV
If the TV has a headphone, 3.5 mm, or RCA audio output but cannot transmit Bluetooth audio itself, connect a Bluetooth transmitter for TV to that output. The transmitter sends the TV’s analog audio wirelessly to a Bluetooth soundbar.
How to set it up
- Connect the transmitter to the TV’s 3.5 mm headphone/audio output or red-and-white RCA audio output.
- Power the transmitter. Many units need a USB power connection or a separate power adapter.
- Put the transmitter into TX or transmit mode. This is essential.
- Put the soundbar into Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Pair the transmitter with the soundbar, then select Bluetooth on the soundbar.
- Play TV audio and adjust any available latency or lip-sync setting.
Buy a transmitter that explicitly accepts TV audio through the type of output your television has. Some adapters are receivers only: they receive Bluetooth from a phone and send it out through a wired jack. A receiver-only adapter cannot send TV audio to a Bluetooth soundbar.
Wireless conversion can introduce delay, occasional dropouts, pairing limits, and extra equipment to power. It also normally provides basic stereo audio rather than the full range of formats and control features available through HDMI.

- Long Battery Life: 1Mii Bluetooth receiver for home stereo deliver 18 hours in transmitter mode and up to 18 hours in receiver mode, all on one charge.
5. Use a converter for less-common port combinations
A converter can help when the TV and soundbar have different interfaces, but it must match both the TV’s output signal and the soundbar’s input.
For example, a television with a compatible digital coaxial/S/PDIF output and a soundbar with only analog AUX input may work with a digital-to-analog converter. The converter receives the TV’s coaxial digital signal and produces an analog stereo output for the soundbar. An analog-to-Bluetooth transmitter can perform the wireless equivalent when the TV has analog out and the soundbar has Bluetooth.
A digital-to-analog converter is not a universal fix. It will not help if the TV has no usable audio output, and it may not work if the TV’s output format is incompatible. When a converter is involved, try setting the TV’s audio format to PCM if that option is available. Menu labels differ by model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if the TV has only optical output?
If the TV has only optical audio out and the soundbar has only HDMI/ARC input, there is no direct connection under the title’s restrictions. You need a model-appropriate converter, a different soundbar with optical or analog input, or a connection from the source device instead of the TV.
Connecting the soundbar to a source device—such as a cable box, streaming box, Blu-ray player, or game console—can work if that source has a compatible audio output. However, it may not reproduce audio from every TV app or input, so it is not always equivalent to connecting the soundbar to the TV.

Why the soundbar has no sound
- Confirm the TV jack is an output. Audio inputs cannot send sound to the soundbar. Check the label and the TV manual.
- Select the correct soundbar input. Choose AUX, Analog, Line, RCA, or Bluetooth to match the connection.
- Change the TV’s audio-output setting. Select the external, wired, headphone, analog, or Bluetooth output instead of internal TV speakers.
- Check the cable and channel assignment. With RCA, red normally carries the right channel and white the left. A loose connector or damaged cable can remove one or both channels.
- For Bluetooth, clear old pairings. Remove the soundbar from the TV’s saved devices, put both products back into pairing mode, and pair them again.
- For a transmitter, verify TX mode. RX or receiver mode is for receiving audio from a phone; it will not transmit TV sound to the soundbar.
- Try PCM when using a converter. A converter may not understand a surround or compressed format selected by the TV.
- Raise the correct volume control. Headphone and analog outputs may be fixed, variable, or muted when the TV is set to another speaker mode.
- Test another source or app. If one input works and another does not, the issue may be that source’s audio format or output setting.
What you will and will not get without HDMI or optical
| Feature | Bluetooth | 3.5 mm/RCA analog |
|---|---|---|
| Basic TV sound | Yes, when compatible | Yes, when the TV has audio out |
| Stereo audio | Usually | Yes |
| Surround or Dolby Atmos passthrough | Do not assume it | No through a standard stereo connection |
| HDMI-CEC control | No | No |
| TV remote volume control | Model-dependent | Model- and output-dependent |
| Perfectly synchronized speech | Not guaranteed | Usually avoids Bluetooth delay, but TV processing can still matter |
For the best result under these limitations, use a direct wired connection when the TV and soundbar provide matching analog ports. Choose Bluetooth when convenience matters more than possible latency. Use a Bluetooth transmitter when the TV has analog out but the soundbar has no analog input.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect a soundbar to a TV wirelessly without HDMI or optical?
Yes. If the TV supports Bluetooth audio and the soundbar supports Bluetooth, put the soundbar into pairing mode and select it in the TV’s Bluetooth or audio-output menu. Bluetooth may introduce delay and may not support TV-remote volume control.
How do I connect a soundbar with an AUX cable?
Use a 3.5 mm stereo cable from the TV’s headphone or audio-out jack to the soundbar’s AUX, Line In, or Analog In. Select the matching input on the soundbar and the external or headphone output in the TV’s sound settings.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchCan I use red-and-white RCA cables with a soundbar?
Yes, but the TV must have red-and-white RCA audio output, not merely RCA input. Use an RCA cable for an RCA soundbar input, or an RCA-to-3.5 mm cable for an AUX input.
What adapter do I need if my TV has analog audio but no Bluetooth?
Use a Bluetooth transmitter that explicitly supports TX or transmit mode. Connect it to the TV’s 3.5 mm or RCA audio output, power it, and pair it with the soundbar. An RX-only Bluetooth receiver will not work for this purpose.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Check for Bluetooth first, then a 3.5 mm headphone/audio output, then red-and-white RCA audio out. If the TV has analog output but no Bluetooth, use a Bluetooth transmitter in TX mode. Every solution depends on having a real TV audio output and a matching soundbar input; analog and Bluetooth connections generally provide stereo audio and may not support Atmos, HDMI-CEC, or guaranteed lip-sync.
