How to Connect a Preamp to a Receiver: RCA, Main-In, and Phono Setups

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the usual setup, connect the preamp’s left and right line outputs to an available analog line input on the receiver:

Preamp LINE OUT L/R → Receiver AUX, CD, TAPE, or LINE IN L/R

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Use a stereo RCA cable, match left to left and right to right, select that input on the receiver, and begin with the volume low. Do not connect the preamp to the receiver’s speaker terminals, PRE OUT, or—after a phono preamp has already boosted and equalized the signal—its PHONO input.

What you need

  • A preamp with an analog LINE OUT, PRE OUT, or similarly labeled output.
  • A receiver with an analog line-level input such as AUX, CD, TAPE, AUDIO IN, or LINE IN.
  • A suitable two-channel cable. For conventional home audio equipment, this is usually a stereo RCA audio cable with red and white plugs.

Line outputs are designed to feed line-level inputs on an amplifier or receiver. Cambridge Audio describes this purpose for line-output connections, while Denon documentation distinguishes a PRE OUT used to feed an amplifier from a LINE IN used as an analog stereo input. Cambridge Audio’s line-output guidance provides the general signal-flow principle.

  • GOLD PLATED CONNECTORS: Corrosion-resistant 24K gold-plated full-metal connectors
  • RELIABLE PERFORMANCE: Eliminates unwanted noise/feedback for pure, clear audio; minimal signal loss for reliably consistent audio

The connector labels matter less than the function. An input marked AUX or CD is normally appropriate; an input marked PHONO, DIGITAL, or a speaker connection is not normally interchangeable with a line-level input.

The standard connection: preamp to a normal receiver input

  1. Turn both components off. Turn the volume down before connecting anything. Disconnecting power while making connections is a sensible precaution, and Yamaha specifically instructs users to disconnect power and turn off the external amplifier for certain pre-out connections. See Yamaha’s connection guidance.
  2. Locate the preamp’s output. Use the sockets labeled LINE OUT, PRE OUT, or OUTPUT. Do not mistake a preamp’s PHONO IN for an output; PHONO is normally an input for a turntable or phono cartridge.
  3. Locate an analog line input on the receiver. Choose an unused red-and-white RCA pair labeled AUX, CD, TAPE, AUDIO, or LINE. Avoid PHONO unless the signal is still an unamplified phono-level signal.
  4. Connect the left and right channels. Plug the preamp’s left output into the receiver’s left input and the right output into the receiver’s right input. RCA plugs are commonly color-coded white for left and red for right.
  5. Power up carefully. Turn on the source and preamp first, then the receiver. Leave the volume low while checking the signal.
  6. Select the matching receiver input. If the cable is connected to CD, select CD; if it is connected to AUX, select AUX. Some receivers have assignable inputs, so verify in the receiver menu that the selected input is assigned to analog audio rather than an unrelated digital source.
  7. Raise the volume gradually. Confirm that both channels work before increasing the level.

The complete signal path should look like this:

Source → Preamp → Receiver analog line input → Receiver power amplifier → Speakers

Which receiver input should you use?

Receiver connection Usually suitable? What it does
AUX, CD, TAPE, AUDIO IN, LINE IN Yes Accepts a normal line-level analog signal and usually routes it through the receiver’s input selector and volume control.
PHONO Only for phono-level output Adds the high gain and RIAA equalization required by an unamplified turntable signal.
MAIN IN, POWER AMP IN, EXT IN Sometimes May send the preamp signal directly to the receiver’s power-amplifier section, bypassing some or all receiver preamp functions.
PRE OUT No It is an output, normally used to feed an external power amplifier or subwoofer.
Speaker terminals No They are amplified outputs for speakers, not inputs for a preamp.
Optical, coaxial digital, HDMI Not with an analog RCA signal These require the corresponding digital or HDMI source and cannot accept ordinary analog RCA output without the appropriate conversion equipment.

Receiver labels can be confusing. For example, current Yamaha documentation identifies PRE OUT as an output for an external amplifier or subwoofer, while analog AUDIO inputs are used for playback devices. Always confirm the direction and function of a jack in the exact receiver manual. Yamaha’s input and output documentation illustrates this distinction.

Should you use MAIN IN or POWER AMP IN?

Use a normal AUX, CD, or LINE input unless you have a specific reason to bypass the receiver’s preamp section. This is the simplest arrangement because the receiver continues to provide its normal input selection and volume control.

A receiver or integrated amplifier with separate PRE OUT and MAIN IN, POWER AMP IN, or EXT IN connections may allow the external preamp to feed the receiver’s power amplifier directly:

External preamp LINE OUT → Receiver MAIN IN or POWER AMP IN

  • Durable PVC Jacket: The black PVC jacket provides excellent protection and flexibility for the cable, resisting wear and tear.
  • Gold-Plated Connectors: The gold plating ensures optimal signal transfer and resists corrosion, resulting in a clear audio signal.
  • Color-Coded Connectors: The red and silver white connector housings provide quick and easy identification for right (red) and left (silver white) audio channels.
  • Molded Strain Relief : The molded strain relief boot provides protection to the cable where it separates, extending its life.
  • Reliable Audio Transmission: This cable is designed for clear and accurate audio signal transfer, enhancing the audio experience.

Depending on the model, this path can bypass the receiver’s input selection, volume control, tone controls, balance, room correction, digital processing, or other protection-related functions. Yamaha describes MAIN IN as a line input for the unit’s main-channel amplifiers and notes that it prevents signals entering the receiver’s preamplifier from reaching that internal amplifier section. Yamaha’s receiver manual explains this type of architecture.

Before using MAIN IN or POWER AMP IN:

  • Confirm in the receiver manual that the connection is an input for the power-amplifier section.
  • Check whether jumpers must be removed or a processor/direct switch must be changed.
  • Determine whether the receiver’s volume control remains active.
  • Use the external preamp as the volume control if the receiver’s volume control is bypassed.
  • Start with the external preamp volume at its lowest practical setting. A mistake can send a very loud signal directly into the power amplifier and speakers.

Do not connect to a receiver’s PRE OUT when you need an input. PRE OUT sends a signal out of the receiver; it does not receive the external preamp’s signal.

Special case: connecting a phono preamp

If the preamp is specifically a phono preamp, the connection depends on whether the turntable’s signal has already been amplified and equalized.

A typical external-phono-preamp setup is:

Turntable → Phono preamp PHONO IN → Phono preamp LINE OUT → Receiver AUX/CD/TAPE/LINE IN

Use an external phono preamp only when the turntable produces phono-level output and the receiver does not have a suitable phono stage. The phono preamp raises the very small cartridge signal to line level and applies the required RIAA equalization. Guidance from Crutchfield’s turntable connection guide and Cambridge Audio supports connecting an active phono-preamp output to an ordinary line input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not connect the output of an external phono preamp to the receiver’s PHONO input. The receiver would apply phono gain and equalization a second time, which can cause very loud, distorted, or incorrectly equalized sound. Use AUX, CD, TAPE, or another normal line-level input instead.

Use the receiver’s PHONO input when the incoming signal is still phono level and needs the receiver’s phono circuitry. If both the turntable and receiver have phono stages, use only one of them. A turntable with a built-in phono preamp should normally be set to its line-output mode when feeding AUX or CD, according to the turntable’s manual.

Connect the turntable’s ground wire to the ground terminal on the phono preamp when one is provided. This often reduces hum, although the correct grounding arrangement depends on the turntable and phono-stage design.

RCA, XLR, and balanced connections

RCA is an unbalanced connection commonly used by home receivers. XLR is commonly used for balanced connections, especially on higher-end or professional equipment. Use the connection type supported by both components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If one component has XLR outputs and the other has RCA inputs, an RCA-to-XLR adapter/cable may be appropriate, but it does not preserve a fully balanced connection. It converts the connection to an unbalanced interface and must be wired correctly for the particular equipment. Connector appearance alone is not enough to determine compatibility.

Do not connect balanced and unbalanced links between the same two components simultaneously unless the manufacturers specifically allow it. Yamaha warns that using both types at once can create a ground loop and unwanted noise. Yamaha’s preamplifier manual discusses this balanced/unbalanced caution.

For most ordinary home receivers, a short stereo RCA connection from the preamp’s RCA output to the receiver’s RCA line input is the clearest and least complicated choice.

Managing two volume controls

A variable preamp output normally includes its own volume control. When it feeds a conventional receiver line input, the receiver may also control volume. This is electrically normal, but two active controls can make the system unpredictable if both are adjusted casually.

A practical approach is to choose one device as the everyday volume control:

  • CRYSTAL CLEAR AUDIO: Enhances audio connections; ideal for home-entertainment and high-fidelity (HiFi) systems
  • RCA INPUT/OUTPUT: 2 RCA output (connect to either L or R input) and 2 RCA input; input can be high frequency (digital audio) or low frequency (subwoofer)
  • GOLD PLATED CONNECTORS: Corrosion-resistant 24K gold-plated full-metal connectors
  • RELIABLE PERFORMANCE: Eliminates unwanted noise/feedback for pure, clear audio; minimal signal loss for reliably consistent audio
  • Set the receiver to a repeatable moderate level and use the preamp for normal listening adjustments; or
  • Set the preamp to a repeatable level and use the receiver’s volume control.

Do not begin with either control near maximum. Make a test at low volume, then establish a safe setting. If the receiver’s MAIN IN or POWER AMP IN bypasses its volume control, the external preamp must control the listening level. The exact behavior varies by model, so the receiver manual takes priority.

Compatibility checklist

Before plugging in the cable, identify:

  • The preamp output format: RCA, XLR, DIN, or another connector.
  • The receiver input format and function: ordinary line input, MAIN IN, POWER AMP IN, EXT IN, or PHONO.
  • Whether the preamp output is fixed or variable.
  • Whether the selected receiver input applies volume, tone, balance, digital conversion, room correction, or bypass processing.
  • Whether the source is phono level or already line level.
  • Whether a turntable ground wire is required.

Connector adapters should be selected only after both manuals confirm the signal type and wiring. An adapter can solve a physical connector mismatch, but it cannot make an incompatible output level or signal type safe.

Troubleshooting

No sound

  1. Confirm that the source, preamp, and receiver are powered on.
  2. Confirm that the source is selected on the preamp.
  3. Confirm that the receiver is set to the input where the cable is connected.
  4. Check that the cable is plugged into the preamp’s output, not an input.
  5. Try another ordinary line input on the receiver.
  6. Check mute, balance, tape-monitor, zone, theater-bypass, and speaker-selection settings.
  7. If using MAIN IN or POWER AMP IN, check the receiver’s required jumpers, switch, or external-input mode.

Very loud or distorted sound

Turn the volume down immediately and check the signal path. Common causes include excessive preamp gain, a line-level output connected to PHONO, or a phono-stage mismatch. A phono-preamp output belongs on AUX, CD, TAPE, or another line input—not on PHONO.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Thin or badly equalized sound

Check whether a turntable signal is being sent to a line input without any phono stage. An unamplified phono signal needs a phono preamp either in the turntable, the receiver, or as a separate component. Conversely, a signal that has already passed through a phono stage should not pass through another PHONO input.

Hum or buzz

  • Confirm the turntable ground wire is connected where appropriate.
  • Keep audio cables away from power cables and power supplies where practical.
  • Disconnect other source components temporarily to identify whether one introduces the noise.
  • Remove any unused simultaneous balanced or unbalanced connection between the same components.
  • Check that left and right plugs are fully seated.

Yamaha identifies simultaneous balanced and unbalanced connections as a possible source of ground-loop noise. Do not assume a hum means the preamp or receiver is defective until the wiring has been simplified.

One channel is missing

Swap the left and right RCA plugs at one end only. If the missing channel moves to the other speaker, suspect the cable, source, or preamp channel. If it remains on the same receiver channel, inspect that receiver input, its balance setting, and its signal path. Also check mute and speaker-selection settings before concluding that a component has failed.

Bottom line

In the common case, connect preamp LINE OUT L/R to a receiver’s AUX, CD, TAPE, or other analog LINE IN L/R with a stereo RCA cable. Match left to left and right to right, select the corresponding receiver input, and bring the volume up slowly.

Use MAIN IN or POWER AMP IN only when the receiver manual confirms the signal path and you intentionally want to bypass some of the receiver’s preamp functions. For a phono preamp, connect its output to a normal line input—not the receiver’s PHONO input.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I connect a preamp to any receiver input?

No. Use an analog line-level input such as AUX, CD, TAPE, or LINE IN. Do not use speaker terminals, PRE OUT, digital-only inputs, or PHONO unless the incoming signal is specifically phono level.

Can I connect a phono preamp to the receiver’s PHONO input?

Normally, no. A phono preamp already boosts and RIAA-equalizes the turntable signal, so connect its output to AUX, CD, TAPE, or another line-level input. Using PHONO again can produce excessive gain, distortion, and incorrect equalization.

What is the difference between LINE IN and MAIN IN?

A normal LINE IN usually sends the signal through the receiver’s input selector and volume-control stages. MAIN IN or POWER AMP IN may feed the power amplifier directly and bypass those functions. Check the exact receiver manual before using the dedicated input.

Why is there no sound after connecting the preamp?

Check the preamp source selection, receiver input selection, cable direction, mute and balance settings, and speaker selection. If you used MAIN IN or POWER AMP IN, verify any required jumpers or mode switches.

Do I need an expensive RCA cable?

The important requirements are the correct connector format, secure connections, and a suitable length. For a normal short RCA-to-RCA connection, a properly made stereo RCA cable is the appropriate starting point.
