Use the Google Home app—not your phone’s Bluetooth settings—to connect a Google Home, Google Nest Mini, Nest Audio, or similar device to Wi‐Fi. For a new or reset speaker, open Google Home and choose Add → Device. If you changed your router, Wi‐Fi name, or password, first make the speaker forget its old network, then add it again.

This process applies broadly to Google Home Speaker (2026), Nest Audio, Nest Mini (2nd gen), Home Mini (1st gen), Google Home, and Home Max. Nest Hub displays use the same general Google Home workflow.

Router, Wi‐Fi name, or password changed Open the speaker’s Wi‐Fi settings, tap Forget this network, then add it again.

Before you begin

  • Plug the speaker into a wall outlet.
  • Have the Google Account you want to use ready.
  • Install or update the Google Home app.
  • Turn on Bluetooth on your phone or tablet.
  • Use a working, secure home Wi‐Fi network.
  • Place the speaker about 15–20 feet (4–6 meters) from the router during setup.
  • Use a compatible device. Google’s current guidance lists Android 9.0 or later; its troubleshooting guidance currently lists iOS 17.0 or later. Check the Google Home listing in the App Store if your iPhone or iPad is older.

Google’s setup guidance supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi‐Fi, but WPA‐2 Enterprise networks are not supported through this setup path. Public, hotel, university, business, shared, guest, captive-portal, mobile-hotspot, and pocket Wi‐Fi networks may also prevent setup.

Connect a new Google speaker

  1. Plug in the speaker and wait for it to power on.
  2. Open Google Home and confirm that you are signed in to the intended Google Account.
  3. Tap Add → Device.
  4. If the app displays a setup card automatically, tap Set up or Next.
  5. Scan the QR code on the speaker or its packaging. If scanning fails, choose Use setup code and enter the code manually.
  6. Allow Google Home to connect to the speaker, then select your home and room.
  7. Choose the intended Wi‐Fi network and enter its password.
  8. Wait for the connection confirmation, then finish optional features such as Voice Match, personal results, and media services.

When Google Home cannot find the speaker at this stage, the problem is occurring before Wi‐Fi authentication. Focus first on discovery, power, Bluetooth, permissions, and the app—not just the Wi‐Fi password.

Move an existing speaker to a new Wi‐Fi network

A Google speaker remembers one Wi‐Fi network at a time. You cannot normally edit its saved password in an ordinary phone Wi‐Fi screen. Use this process after changing the router, network name, or password:

  1. Open Google Home.
  2. Tap Home → All devices if necessary.
  3. Touch and hold the speaker’s device tile.
  4. Tap Settings → Device information → Wi‐Fi.
  5. Tap Forget this network.
  6. Return to the Google Home home screen.
  7. Tap Add → Device → Search for device.
  8. Follow the setup prompts and select the new Wi‐Fi network.

Use the same Google Account associated with the existing speaker. If the speaker is offline but still appears in Google Home, try this route before resetting it.

If Google Home cannot find the speaker

  1. Confirm that the speaker is powered on.
  2. Make sure other devices can see and use the home Wi‐Fi.
  3. Check that Bluetooth is enabled and Google Home has the permissions it requests.
  4. Move the phone and speaker close to the router.
  5. Force-close and reopen Google Home.
  6. Turn the phone’s Wi‐Fi off and back on.
  7. Unplug the router for one minute, reconnect it, and wait for internet service to return.
  8. Unplug the speaker for one minute, reconnect it, and retry setup.
  9. Use Use setup code if QR scanning fails.

If the speaker still does not appear, use Google’s device-discovery troubleshooting guide. Do not repeatedly factory-reset the speaker until these lower-risk checks are complete.

If the Wi‐Fi network is missing

  • Check whether another phone or computer can see the network.
  • Confirm that you are selecting the correct SSID, especially if the router broadcasts separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names.
  • Try the other supported band when your router exposes both.
  • Check whether guest mode or client isolation blocks devices from discovering one another.
  • Disable or review router access-control settings temporarily, if appropriate.
  • Avoid networks requiring a browser sign-in page; the speaker has no ordinary browser interface for completing a captive-portal login.

A combined 2.4/5 GHz SSID may work normally. Splitting the bands is a diagnostic option, not a requirement, and adds network complexity.

If the password is rejected

Wi‐Fi passwords are case-sensitive. Retype the password manually, check uppercase and lowercase characters, and use the app’s show password option where available. On Android, if Google Home offers to retrieve the saved Wi‐Fi password and that fails, choose No, thanks and enter it yourself.

Use a hotspot to identify the problem

A temporary phone hotspot can help separate a home-network problem from a speaker or app problem:

  1. Create a temporary mobile hotspot.
  2. Try setting up the speaker on it.
  3. If it connects, the speaker can connect to at least one Wi‐Fi network. Investigate the home router, modem, ISP, access controls, isolation settings, or enterprise authentication.
  4. If it fails there too, continue investigating the phone, Google Home app, speaker, or reset state.

This is a diagnostic test, not a recommended permanent connection. A successful hotspot test does not rule out every possible hardware or firmware problem.

When to factory-reset the speaker

Factory-reset only when Google Home cannot forget the old network, cannot communicate with the device, or cannot add it to the replacement network. A reset erases the speaker’s saved configuration and requires complete setup again.

Reset controls differ by model, so identify the exact device before pressing buttons. Use Google’s model-specific factory-reset instructions, then return to Google Home and follow the new-device steps. If the speaker belonged to someone else or is being moved to another home, a reset may be required before setting it up with your account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not reset the router when only the speaker needs to be reset.

Wi‐Fi network absent Verify the SSID, try both bands, and check guest isolation or router access controls.
Incorrect password Retype it manually with exact capitalization and verify the selected network.
Works on hotspot, not home Wi‐Fi Investigate the router, ISP, security settings, enterprise authentication, or local-device isolation.
Fails on every known-good network Reset the exact model; if it remains undiscoverable or shows a power fault, contact Google support or consider replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect a Google speaker without the Google Home app?

Not through the normal supported Wi‐Fi setup process. Bluetooth may assist discovery, but Google Home completes the network configuration.

Can I use hotel or guest Wi‐Fi?

It may not work. Captive portals, shared authentication, guest isolation, and enterprise security can prevent setup and local device discovery.

Does a Google speaker work on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz?

Google’s current setup guidance supports both bands. Router configuration still matters, so try the other band if one fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to reset after changing my Wi‐Fi password?

Usually no. First use Forget this network in Google Home and add the speaker again. Reset only if the app cannot forget or re-add it.

Can I leave the speaker connected to a phone hotspot?

You can use a hotspot for diagnosis, but it is not a practical permanent home-network solution for most users.
