Compare candidate routes at the same departure time using current traffic information, then screen each route for pavement, grades, vehicle restrictions, access, capacity, intersections, turning conflicts and work-zone safety. A route that saves five minutes on a map can be a poor choice if it has a rough surface, an unsuitable bridge, repeated unprotected turns or a queue that was not included in the estimate.
No detour can be ranked honestly for a particular traveler without an origin, destination, departure time, vehicle details and current local information. Use the official signed detour as your starting point, verify transportation-agency updates close to departure, and choose the fastest route that remains suitable and acceptably safe for that trip.

What to compare before choosing a detour
Construction changes the conditions that ordinary route planners summarize. A normal map may emphasize distance and an estimated arrival time, while a work-zone decision also depends on queues, signal timing, lane closures, pavement, grades, restrictions and how traffic interacts with the work area. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) identifies travel time, delay, queue length and traffic conditions as useful measures, and lists pavement condition, grades, access, capacity, congestion, intersections and vehicle restrictions among alternate-route factors.
Make the comparison fair by holding the departure time constant. Record each route’s full-trip estimate, not just the portion beyond the closure. Include the approach to the detour, the detour itself and the return to the original road. If one estimate was checked at 7:00 a.m. and another at 8:30 a.m., the numbers do not describe equivalent conditions.

| Criterion | What to examine | Why it can change the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Travel time | Expected end-to-end time at the same departure time, including queues, work-zone delay, congestion, signals and stops where data are available. | A short route can be slower when a queue or signalized intersection absorbs the apparent mileage advantage. |
| Road condition | Pavement quality, shoulder condition, grades, drainage, surface width and whether the route suits the vehicle. | Rough pavement or a steep grade can increase risk, vehicle wear and fuel use even when the route is fast. |
| Safety | Access points, capacity, congestion, intersections, stop control, turning conflicts, visibility, restrictions and exposure to work-zone traffic. | Operational complexity and conflict points may matter more than a small time saving. |
| Reliability | How current the information is, the likelihood of changing work phases, incident exposure and queue variability. | A route with a slightly longer estimate may be more dependable than one with a volatile queue. |
| Access and community effects | Access to homes and businesses, transit, schools, hospitals and local streets. | A route that appears efficient can block or complicate access for people who need to use it. |
Step 1: Start with the official signed detour
Look for the transportation agency’s closure notice, project page, traveler-information service or changeable message signs. The official route is the baseline because it has been selected and signed for the closure under local traffic-control procedures. Advance notice is intended to give drivers time to select an alternate route, while detour signs guide road users onto, through and back from the detour.
The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) 11th Edition, issued in December 2023, says a DETOUR sign should be used in advance of a road-user detour over a different roadway or route. That sign tells you how to follow the traffic-control plan; it does not prove that the signed route is fastest for your particular origin, destination or vehicle.
What to verify near departure
- Whether the closure is active, delayed, extended or operating in a different phase.
- Whether the signed route has a temporary restriction, bridge limit, lane closure or incident.
- Whether changeable message signs report a current queue, crash, weather problem or reopening.
- Whether local access is maintained for residents, businesses, transit, emergency services, schools or hospitals.
- Whether the agency has issued a different instruction for large, high, wide or heavy vehicles.
Follow the signs in the field even if a navigation app proposes a shortcut. A map database may not reflect a newly installed sign, a shifted work phase or a restriction that applies only to certain vehicles.
Step 2: Compare total travel time under equivalent conditions
For each candidate, record the time you checked the estimate, the planned departure time and the information source. Compare the entire trip, including the approach to the closure and the return to the intended route. Where available, note the predicted queue length, average speed, delay and the number of signalized intersections or controlled stops.
Do not substitute mileage for delay
Distance is a fixed measurement; work-zone delay is not. A two-mile detour can take longer than a six-mile detour if it feeds into a congested arterial or crosses several signals. Conversely, a longer rural route may be unreliable if narrow pavement, grades, weather or slow vehicles reduce its effective speed.

Use a time log
- Enter the origin, destination and intended departure time.
- Check the official closure and detour information.
- For every candidate, record full-trip travel time, distance, reported delay or queue, and the timestamp of the estimate.
- Repeat the check close to departure if the project has changing phases, peak-period queues or a history of incidents.
- Mark estimates that do not include a known closure, queue or local restriction; treat them as incomplete rather than directly comparable.
Traffic-management programs commonly monitor volume, speed, travel time, queue length, crashes, incident response and clearance. Those measures help explain why an estimate changes, but they are not a promise of a particular arrival time.
Step 3: Screen the route for road condition and geometry
Assess pavement and geometry separately from travel time. FHWA’s alternate-route guidance includes pavement condition and grades because both affect whether a route is practical, especially for trucks, buses, trailers, motorcycles, emergency vehicles and vehicles carrying fragile loads.

- Look for potholes, broken edges, patches, loose aggregate, standing water and a surface too narrow for safe passing.
- Check whether shoulders are usable for breakdowns or bicyclists, and whether construction has removed or narrowed them.
- Consider the effect of darkness, rain, snow, ice or dust on a surface that is already uneven.
- For a low-clearance or heavily loaded vehicle, confirm that rough approaches and temporary ramps will not cause grounding or loss of control.
Grades, curves and sight distance
- Identify steep climbs and descents that can reduce speed, increase braking demand or cause overheating.
- Check sharp curves, narrow bridges, crest curves and locations where queues may form out of sight.
- Consider whether a route’s geometry gives drivers enough sight distance to react to stopped traffic, workers, pedestrians or farm equipment.
Do not infer road condition solely from a normal map estimate. A navigation service can calculate a route without describing pavement distress, temporary steel plates or a grade that is unsuitable for your vehicle.
Step 4: Confirm vehicle and access restrictions
A route is not a viable alternative if the vehicle cannot legally or safely use it. Check height, weight, width and turning restrictions, as well as restrictions on hazardous materials, trailers or commercial vehicles where applicable.
| Restriction or condition | Questions to answer | Potential consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Height and clearance | Are bridges, signs, temporary structures and utility crossings high enough for the vehicle? | A low clearance can make the route impossible and create a severe collision hazard. |
| Weight and axle limits | Are posted limits compatible with the vehicle’s gross and axle weight? | An unsuitable bridge or roadway may be illegal or structurally unsafe. |
| Width and lane space | Can the vehicle remain within the lane through narrow sections and work-zone shifts? | Encroachment, side-swipe exposure and inability to pass can increase risk. |
| Turning geometry | Can the vehicle make every turn without mounting a curb or crossing opposing lanes? | A route that works for a car may fail for a bus, trailer or delivery truck. |
| Local access | Will the route preserve access to the actual destination, loading area, driveway or emergency facility? | A nominally open road may not serve the trip’s final approach. |
For a commercial or emergency trip, verify restrictions with the responsible road agency or project authority rather than relying on a consumer app’s vehicle profile alone.

Step 5: Compare safety and operational complexity
Safety is more than the posted speed or the absence of a crash alert. Examine how traffic enters, leaves and crosses the route, and how much attention the driver must devote to temporary conditions.

Intersections and turning conflicts
Count major intersections, stop-controlled approaches, signalized junctions, roundabouts and unprotected left turns. Each can add delay and create conflict with opposing traffic, pedestrians, cyclists or vehicles entering from a side road. A route with fewer miles but many difficult turns may be less suitable for an unfamiliar driver or a long vehicle.
Capacity and congestion
Determine whether the receiving road has enough capacity for diverted traffic. A narrow local street may function acceptably in light traffic but fail when a closure sends a large volume of vehicles onto it. Watch for queues that block driveways, intersections or pedestrian crossings.
Work-zone exposure
- Check lane shifts, temporary barriers, reduced shoulders and merging areas.
- Look for worker access points, construction entrances and locations where equipment crosses the road.
- Consider night visibility, glare, dust, rain and the ability to identify temporary signs.
- Allow for incident response: a minor crash on a one-lane or low-capacity detour can stop the route entirely.
FHWA’s work-zone approach is intended to minimize traffic delay, maintain or improve motorist and worker safety, complete roadwork in a timely manner and maintain access for businesses and residents. Those objectives can conflict, so a route should not be judged on travel time alone.
Step 6: Evaluate reliability and changing conditions
Construction conditions are dynamic. A route can be open when you plan the trip and constrained when you arrive because of a shifted work phase, a crash, weather, an event or a queue that has not cleared.

Information freshness
Write down when each report was issued or checked. Give greater weight to a current agency alert or changeable message sign than to an old project description. If a source does not state when its travel-time estimate was generated, treat the number cautiously.
Variability matters
Compare the likely range of conditions, not only the best-looking estimate. A route that is normally 10 minutes faster but regularly experiences an unpredictable queue may be a worse choice for an appointment, delivery window or medical trip than a route with a steadier arrival time.
Recheck after starting
If official signs or agency messages change, follow the new instruction. Do not make an abrupt maneuver to pursue a map reroute. Continue to the next safe decision point and use the signed route unless an authorized traffic-control instruction directs otherwise.

How the choice changes by traveler and vehicle
Passenger car
For an ordinary car, pavement and turning restrictions may be less limiting than for a truck, but queues, visibility, pedestrian activity and difficult intersections still matter. A slightly longer route with predictable flow may be preferable when arriving on time is important.
Truck, bus or trailer
Confirm clearance, weight, width, turning radius, grade and loading access before considering time. A route that is legal for a car may be unusable for a heavy or long vehicle. Allow for slower acceleration and braking in temporary lane patterns.
Motorcycle or bicycle
Surface defects, steel plates, loose material, drainage grates, narrow lanes and poor visibility deserve extra attention. A route with fewer high-speed merges may be safer even if its estimated time is longer.

U.S. policy context and what it does not decide
The Work Zone Safety and Mobility Rule was published in the Federal Register on November 1, 2024, and became effective December 2, 2024. FHWA describes it as establishing requirements and guidance for systematically addressing work-zone safety and mobility impacts on Federal-aid highway projects. State and local procedures can differ, so a project-specific decision should use the responsible agency’s current information.
FHWA guidance recommends active monitoring and management during construction. Possible measures include traffic volume, average speed, travel time, queue length and crashes. These measures help agencies manage impacts; they do not create a universal consumer ranking of detours.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Choosing the shortest distance: Compare full-trip time and delay at the same departure time.
- Trusting an old map route: Check current agency notices and field signs immediately before travel.
- Ignoring the vehicle: Verify height, weight, width, turning and grade constraints before departure.
- Assuming the fastest estimate is safest: Examine intersections, turning conflicts, congestion, capacity and work-zone exposure.
- Comparing mismatched times: Recheck every candidate under equivalent departure assumptions.
- Using an unofficial shortcut: Treat signed detours and authorized traffic-control instructions as the operating baseline.
- Assuming an app includes every delay: Treat estimates as time information, not a complete pavement, restriction or safety assessment.
- Forgetting the final approach: Confirm that the route actually reaches the destination, loading area, driveway or facility entrance.
When no route is clearly best
Sometimes two routes remain suitable but have different advantages: one is faster in current traffic, while another has better pavement, fewer conflict points or more reliable access. Make the choice according to the trip’s priority. A time-critical delivery may favor reliability and legal vehicle access over a nominally shorter route; a private passenger trip may tolerate more distance to avoid a difficult turn or poor surface.
If conditions are changing rapidly, delay departure if possible, use the agency’s latest instruction and allow extra time rather than forcing a marginal route. The appropriate choice is the route that meets the trip’s constraints under the conditions you can reasonably verify, not a universal winner.
