Ready-mix is usually the practical choice when a large or tightly timed placement needs a consistent supply. Bagged on-site mixing can make sense for smaller pours that can be produced in manageable batches, especially where truck access, minimum loads or delivery fees undermine a ready-mix quote. There is no universal cubic-yard break-even point: compare a complete delivered quote with bags, equipment, labor, handling and waste for your location.
What “ready-mix” and “on-site mixing” actually mean
Ready-mixed concrete
The American Cement Association defines ready-mixed concrete as concrete batched at a central plant, tailored to the contractor’s specifications and delivered in a plastic condition. The plant handles proportioning of cementitious material, aggregate, water and any specified admixtures before delivery. See American Cement Association: Applications of Cement.

Transit-mixed concrete
With transit mixing, ingredients are charged into a truck mixer. Mixing can occur while the truck travels, or the truck can complete mixing at the jobsite, depending on the production method. The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) distinguishes transit, shrink and central mixing on its concrete production overview. That page also says about 20% of U.S. concrete plants use a central mixer; the page does not state a publication year, so treat that as contextual information rather than a current industry percentage.

Bagged site mixing
Bagged concrete is a packaged dry mix combined with water at the project. You can mix it by hand or with a barrel-type mixer. QUIKRETE states that “for smaller projects, hand mixing is often the best method” in its hand-mixing instructions, and gives separate guidance for machine mixing. This is different from volumetric mobile mixing, where a truck meters ingredients from separate compartments and mixes at the job; local availability and pricing for that service are not established here.

Start with the placement, not the material price
Before requesting prices, define what must happen between the first batch and the finished surface. A slab, footing or walkway may require a continuous placement so that successive batches join and can be consolidated and finished before earlier concrete becomes unworkable. Write down:
- Required volume and dimensions, including thickened edges, steps or footings.
- Specified strength, exposure class, aggregate size, slump or workability and air entrainment where required.
- How quickly concrete must be placed, consolidated and finished.
- Available workers, wheelbarrows, forms, screeds, vibratory equipment and finishing tools.
- Truck route, turning area, overhead clearance, chute reach and the distance from discharge point to forms.
- Water supply, weather exposure and the curing method you will use after finishing.
If the design professional or project specification names a mix, follow it. Convenience alone is not a valid reason to substitute a general-purpose bagged product for specified structural concrete.
When bagged on-site mixing is the better fit
- Small, batchable placement: The crew can mix, move, place and finish each batch without creating cold joints or losing control of the surface.
- Difficult truck access: A narrow drive, low overhead wires, limited turning space or a discharge point beyond the chute makes delivery impractical.
- Delivery minimums dominate the quote: A supplier’s minimum load, short-load fee, delivery charge or waiting terms make a small order uneconomic.
- Available labor and equipment: You have people to measure water, mix, transport and finish while maintaining a repeatable batch routine.
- Product compatibility: The selected packaged mix is listed for the application. QUIKRETE Concrete Mix, for example, is marketed for general work such as sidewalks, floors, steps, patios and curbs in 40-, 60- and 80-pound bags; confirm the current label for the product you purchase.
On-site mixing shifts responsibility to the crew. Every bag must be stored dry, measured consistently, mixed thoroughly and moved quickly enough to keep the placement coherent. The method is not automatically cheaper or weaker; execution and the specified mix control the result.

- Large or fast placement: Bag-by-bag handling would make it difficult to keep the pour supplied and finished continuously.
- Specified design: The project requires a supplier to furnish concrete to stated strength, exposure, aggregate, slump or air requirements. Confirm who prepares mix submittals and who arranges testing.
- Prepared access: The truck can safely reach the discharge point, and forms, reinforcement, subbase, tools and finishing crew will be ready when it arrives.
- Competitive delivered quote: Local pricing remains favorable after minimum-load, short-load, delivery, waiting and pumping charges are included and compared with all site-mix costs.
Ready-mix removes individual bag measuring and most mixing labor, but it does not remove planning. A truck arriving before the crew or forms are ready can create waiting charges and quality problems; a truck that cannot reach the pour can leave you with an unusable delivery plan.

Compare total cost with one consistent estimate
Use the same measured volume, specification and placement scope for both alternatives. A price per cubic yard is not comparable with a price per bag until every supporting cost is included.
| Cost or constraint | Ready-mix estimate | Bagged on-site estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Quoted concrete quantity and specified mix | Number of bags and current bag price |
| Delivery and minimums | Delivery charge, minimum load, short-load fee, waiting or scheduling terms | Transport from storage to the mixing and placement area |
| Equipment | Pump or other placement equipment when required | Mixer purchase or rental; hand-mixing tools where applicable |
| Labor | Crew for discharge, placement, consolidation and finishing | Additional labor for opening bags, measuring water, mixing, moving each batch, placement and finishing |
| Waste and contingency | Allowance for ordering, access or overrun issues | Extra bags, spillage, leftover mixed material and handling losses |
| Site requirements | Truck route, turning space, overhead clearance and chute reach | Water supply, dry bag storage, mixer location and wheelbarrow route |
A responsible break-even calculation needs your location, volume, supplier quote, labor rate, equipment access and placement plan. Request current local ready-mix quotes and record every surcharge. Then price the bagged alternative using the same assumptions. Do not assume a delivered load is cheaper—or that bags are cheaper—without this side-by-side calculation.
Capacity and continuity: the question hidden inside “how much can I mix?”
There is no single hand-mixing volume limit that applies to every crew. The practical limit is the rate at which your team can produce a uniform batch, transport it, place it, consolidate it and finish it while the next batch is being prepared. A small pour may be manageable by hand; repeated larger batches generally justify a mechanical mixer if site mixing is selected.
Assess your batch cycle
- Measure the dry mix and the manufacturer’s required water for one batch.
- Mix until the batch is uniform using the chosen hand or machine method.
- Move the concrete over the actual travel distance to the forms.
- Place, consolidate and strike off the batch while another person prepares the next one.
- Check whether the cycle keeps the placement progressing without long pauses or partially finished edges.
If the cycle cannot keep pace with the required placement, a ready-mix delivery or a larger mechanical setup may be safer than adding more bags to the same process.

Equipment and water control for bagged mixing
Hand mixing
QUIKRETE’s hand-mixing list includes a mortar tub or wheelbarrow, mixing hoe, shovel, measuring pail, bucket, waterproof gloves and safety glasses. Set up the mixing area close enough to the forms to limit handling, but far enough away that spills do not contaminate the subbase or reinforcement. Use a repeatable measuring method for every batch.
Machine mixing
QUIKRETE recommends a barrel-type concrete mixer for machine mixing and includes a 3-cubic-foot mixer in its equipment list. Its product data sheet names barrel-type and mortar mixers and advises selecting mixer size to suit the job. The manufacturer also notes that buying or renting a power mixer can be considered for a project; rental terms vary by location.
Use the product’s water directions
For QUIKRETE Concrete Mix, the data sheet calls for approximately 6 pints of water per 80-pound bag initially, with a final range of about 6 to 9 pints per bag, and recommends a 2- to 3-inch slump if a slump cone is used. Those figures apply to that named product and can change with formulation; follow the current label and data sheet for the mix you actually buy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsQUIKRETE warns in its hand- and machine-mixing instructions that extra water weakens concrete and states that an additional quart per 80-pound bag can reduce strength by up to 40%. Attribute that figure to QUIKRETE’s instruction pages; do not generalize it to every packaged mix. If a batch is too stiff, do not improvise beyond the product directions or project specification.

Ordering and receiving ready-mix
- Confirm the specification. Give the supplier required strength, aggregate size, slump or workability, air entrainment and exposure requirements, plus the total quantity and placement date.
- Ask for the complete commercial terms. Request the material price, minimum load, short-load charge, delivery fee, waiting-time policy, scheduling window and any pump or placement-equipment charge.
- Verify access. Measure the truck route, turning space, overhead clearance and discharge reach. Decide whether chutes, pumps, buggies or wheelbarrows are needed.
- Prepare before dispatch. Finish forms, reinforcement, subbase, tools, crew assignments and the finishing plan before the truck is released.
- Review the ticket and instructions. Confirm the mix and quantity on the delivery ticket. If water is requested at the job, document the addition as required by the supplier’s procedures and project specification.
- Place and finish continuously. Keep the truck, crew and equipment coordinated so concrete is not left waiting in the form or on the truck.
- Cure as specified. Follow the project documents or product guidance for curing and protection after finishing.
NRMCA’s overview summarizes ASTM C 94 as requiring discharge within 90 minutes and before 300 revolutions after water was added to cement. That is the NRMCA page’s summary of the cited standard, not a replacement for checking the current ASTM edition, project specification and any permitted adjustments. Temperature and travel time can also affect slump and workability.
NRMCA’s materials FAQ says purchaser-requested water additions should be documented and signed on the delivery ticket and that additions should be followed by at least 30 revolutions of the mixer at mixing speed. Confirm the supplier’s procedure and the governing specification before authorizing any addition. Never add water casually to make a load easier to place.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Quality, specification and responsibility
Neither method guarantees a particular strength. Proportioning, water control, mixing, placement, consolidation, finishing and curing all affect the concrete. Ready-mix can provide a supplier-controlled design and batch ticket, but the contractor still controls site access, discharge, placement and curing. Bagged mixing gives the crew direct control over each batch, while also making the crew responsible for every measurement and handling step.
For structural or load-bearing work, use the specified mix and consult the responsible design professional or concrete supplier. Do not select a general-purpose bag solely because it is convenient, and do not substitute a ready-mix design without confirming that it meets the project requirements.

Weather and scheduling decisions
Weather affects both methods, but in different ways. A ready-mix order concentrates the work into a delivery window: rain, heat, cold, traffic or a delayed crew can disrupt the placement. On-site mixing allows you to pause between batches, but bags, mixer and labor still need protection from rain, contamination and temperature extremes. In either case, check the project’s temperature, moisture, finishing and curing requirements before committing to the pour date.
Schedule the crew and equipment so the forms are ready before mixing begins or the truck arrives. A delivery slot is not a substitute for a placement plan, and a mixer sitting idle does not solve a shortage of workers or finishing capacity.
Decision matrix for common project conditions
| Project condition | More practical starting point | Reason to verify before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Small patio, step, curb or repair with short carrying distance | Bagged on-site mixing | Confirm the product is suitable and that the crew can finish each batch without interruption. |
| Large slab or footing requiring a steady placement rate | Ready-mix | Verify truck access, discharge reach, crew readiness, minimum load and waiting terms. |
| Very limited truck access but adequate space for a mixer | Bagged on-site mixing | Check mixer capacity, bag storage, water supply and labor for repeated handling. |
| Specified structural mix with testing or submittal requirements | Ready-mix or another approved supplier-controlled design | Confirm responsibility for mix approval, tickets, testing and curing; do not substitute a general bagged mix. |
| Small quantity with an expensive minimum-load charge | Compare both; site mixing may win | Include mixer rental, labor, waste and the time required to place and finish. |
A practical go/no-go checklist
Choose site mixing only if all of these are true
- The selected packaged mix meets the application and specification.
- You can store enough bags dry and move them safely.
- Water, measuring equipment, mixer or hand tools and protective equipment are ready.
- The crew can sustain the batch cycle through placement and finishing.
- The total estimate includes labor, equipment, handling and waste.
Choose ready-mix only after these are confirmed
- The supplier has accepted the required mix and quantity.
- Minimum-load, short-load, delivery, waiting and pumping terms are written into the quote.
- The truck can reach the discharge point without unsafe or impossible maneuvers.
- Forms, reinforcement, subbase, crew and finishing tools will be ready in the delivery window.
- The placement and curing plan complies with the project specification and applicable standard.
Bottom line
Use bagged on-site mixing for a genuinely small, manageable pour when your crew has the time, tools, water and access to maintain consistent batches. Use ready-mix when volume, speed, specified performance or placement continuity outweigh the logistical work of receiving a truck. The sound choice comes from a complete local cost comparison and a realistic placement plan—not from a universal volume rule or a material-only price.
