The right backup system is the one that matches your essential loads, startup surges, desired outage duration, fuel or recharge plan, and safe connection method. A generator is not automatically better for long outages, and a battery is not automatically better for every home. Start with a written load plan before comparing equipment.

Start with the loads you must keep running

Do not size an outage system from a generic “whole-home” wattage. List every appliance, circuit, and medical device that must operate, then record its running power, startup demand, and required operating time. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises households to identify backup sources for personal devices, appliances, and medical equipment, while the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns that a portable generator can be overloaded even when it is connected correctly. See the CDC power-source guidance and CPSC portable-generator material.

Build a practical essential-load worksheet

  • Refrigerator or freezer: record normal running watts and compressor startup watts.
  • Heating, cooling, or ventilation: identify the exact equipment and whether a motor or compressor starts under load.
  • Water pump, sump pump, well pump, or sewage ejector: record running and starting demand.
  • Medical equipment: include every device, its battery option, and the hours it must run.
  • Internet equipment, phones, lighting, security, and controls: include chargers and network hardware.
  • Cooking, hot-water, laundry, and workshop circuits: mark them as essential or deferrable rather than assuming they all run together.

Use the equipment nameplate, manufacturer documentation, or a qualified electrician’s measurement instead of guessing. Separate loads that can be scheduled one at a time from loads that truly need simultaneous power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account for starting demand

Motors and compressors can draw substantially more power for a short period when they start. A system may have enough continuous output for a refrigerator but still trip when the compressor starts. Your comparison therefore needs both continuous output and surge or starting capability for the exact equipment. If the manufacturer does not publish a startup specification, have the load assessed rather than treating a category rating as proof.

Define how long the outage must be covered

Energy planning is separate from power-output planning. Output, measured in watts or kilowatts, answers “can the system run these devices at once?” Stored or supplied energy, measured in watt-hours, kilowatt-hours, fuel quantity, and runtime, answers “for how long?”

The CDC says people experience about four hours of power loss per year on average, but it also cautions that large disasters can create much longer outages. That average is national context, not a forecast for your address. Households dependent on home-use medical devices should plan for extended loss of power with their healthcare provider, utility, and local emergency-management resources.

Turn the worksheet into an energy estimate

  1. For each essential load, multiply running watts by the hours it must operate.
  2. Add the resulting watt-hours for all loads that will run during the chosen period.
  3. Allow for cycling equipment such as refrigerators, which may not run continuously but still need startup capacity.
  4. Compare the total with a battery’s usable energy, not its nameplate capacity, or with the generator’s documented fuel runtime at the relevant load.
  5. Recalculate for a shorter emergency schedule if the full list would require an impractically large system.

For example, a household might prioritize refrigeration, a sump pump, communications, lighting, and a medical device while leaving electric cooking and laundry off. That list can produce a very different system size from a claim that a unit will power the entire house.

Compare generators and batteries on the same criteria

Use the exact model specifications and your load worksheet. The following comparison describes the operating differences established by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE); it is not a current installed-price survey.

Comparison point Fuel generator Battery storage system
Power output Continuous and starting output must cover the connected loads; verify the exact generator rating and overload behavior. Inverter continuous and surge limits must cover the loads; usable output can be lower than the battery’s stored-energy rating.
Energy during an outage Runtime depends on fuel quantity, engine load, and the exact model’s published data. Runtime depends on usable kilowatt-hours and the household load schedule.
Replenishment Requires a safe, available fuel supply and refueling plan. Can recharge from the grid; a compatible solar-plus-storage design may recharge from solar during an outage.
Noise and emissions Portable engines can be noisy and produce carbon monoxide (CO) and other exhaust. DOE describes battery storage as quiet and odorless during operation.
Connection May feed selected appliances directly or connect to household circuits through compliant transfer equipment. May use dedicated outlets, a backed-up load panel, or broader home integration, depending on the system design.
Installation Portable use still requires safe placement; house wiring requires appropriate equipment and qualified electrical work. Stationary units may require permits and inspection. Home systems require compatible electrical equipment, installation instructions, and often professional design and permitting.
Cost and ownership DOE characterizes portable generators as among the least expensive backup choices, but actual purchase, installation, fuel, maintenance, and replacement costs vary by system. Compare the complete purchase, installation, charging, maintenance, and replacement costs for the specific battery and inverter configuration.

Direct appliance or extension-cord connection

A portable generator or portable battery can supply individual appliances through outlets rated for the equipment. This approach limits the number of loads and requires cords, weather protection, and careful load management. It does not make it safe to energize a home’s wiring through an improvised plug or backfeed connection.

Selected-circuit connection

A transfer switch or other approved transfer equipment can connect a generator to designated household circuits while isolating them from the utility. A battery system may use a backed-up-loads panel or an equivalent manufacturer-approved arrangement. The electrician must verify conductor sizing, breaker compatibility, grounding, neutral treatment, and the equipment’s listing and instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Broader home or stationary integration

A permanently installed generator or home battery can be designed around a larger set of circuits, automatic transfer, and load management. The result still depends on the actual output and energy limits. “Whole home” describes the connection design, not unlimited simultaneous capacity. Local permitting and inspection requirements vary by jurisdiction.

CPSC generator instructions advise having a qualified electrician install equipment for connection to house wiring in accordance with local electrical codes. Use that requirement as a decision point: if you want existing circuits powered, budget for compliant transfer equipment and professional installation rather than treating a portable unit as a do-it-yourself service entrance.

Understand fuel, runtime, and recharge constraints

Fuel generators

A generator’s runtime changes with fuel type, tank size, engine condition, ambient conditions, and operating load. Compare the manufacturer’s runtime at a stated load and plan how fuel will be stored, transported, and replenished during a prolonged outage. Never assume the runtime printed for one load applies to your household’s load.

Fuel availability is a resilience issue. A generator that meets the load but cannot be refueled during a storm may provide less practical coverage than a smaller system with a dependable fuel plan. Include fuel containers, approved storage, stabilizing or turnover practices required by the fuel and local rules, and a way to shut down and cool the equipment before refueling.

Battery systems

A battery’s useful outage duration depends on usable energy, inverter conversion, reserve settings, temperature, battery condition, and which loads are allowed to run. Ask for the usable kilowatt-hour figure and continuous and surge output for the complete installed system, not just a battery module’s nominal capacity.

Recharge planning is equally important. Grid charging is unavailable during a grid outage unless the grid returns. Solar charging requires a system configured to operate independently of the grid, sufficient inverter capability, suitable daylight, and a load schedule that leaves energy available for overnight use. A battery can be quiet and convenient yet still run out of energy if the essential-load list is too large or cloudy weather limits recharge.

Solar panels do not automatically keep a home powered

In a typical grid-tied photovoltaic installation, the inverter shuts the solar array off when utility service fails so it does not send power onto lines being repaired. DOE states that “Technically, residential solar panels alone are not enough to make your home resilient.” See DOE’s solar and resilience basics.

To operate independently, the home needs a properly configured inverter and storage or another approved islanding arrangement. DOE explains that solar paired with storage can provide outage power, but the result depends on system configuration, stored energy, power limits, sunlight, and the loads selected. Do not treat existing rooftop panels as an outage solution until the installer confirms the exact backup behavior and required equipment.

Put generator safety ahead of convenience

Portable and stationary fuel generators produce carbon monoxide, an odorless and colorless gas. The CDC’s instruction is explicit: “Only use generators outside, more than 20 feet away from any windows, doors, and vents.” Its outage guidance likewise says: “Never use a generator, pressure washer, or any gasoline-powered engine inside your home, basement, or garage or less than 20 feet from any window, door, or vent.” See the CDC carbon-monoxide guidance and CDC outage advice.

  • Place the generator outdoors, more than 20 feet from windows, doors, and vents, with exhaust directed away from the building.
  • Never operate it inside a home, basement, garage, shed, crawlspace, or other enclosed or partly enclosed area.
  • Install carbon-monoxide alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas; battery-operated or battery-backup alarms continue working when mains power is unavailable.
  • Keep the generator dry and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for rain, snow, grounding, fuel, and extension cords.
  • Do not overload the unit. Start large motor loads according to the manufacturer’s sequence and disconnect nonessential loads if the system approaches its limit.
  • Let the engine cool before refueling, and keep fuel and hot components separated according to local fire-safety requirements.

CPSC also warns about electrical shock, wet conditions, fire, grounding, and overload. Its current warning is available in the 2026 CPSC release; additional generator instructions are in the CPSC generator documents.

Battery systems have installation and operating limits too

A battery avoids combustion exhaust during operation, but it is not a plug-and-play substitute for every home connection. The installer must match the battery, inverter, transfer or backup panel, service equipment, and any solar equipment. Review the manufacturer’s clearances, indoor or outdoor placement rules, temperature range, fire-safety provisions, shutdown procedure, and maintenance requirements.

Ask how the system behaves when its state of charge is low, when the grid returns, and when a high-starting-current appliance switches on. A system may shed selected loads, reserve energy for a later outage, or stop supplying circuits at its output limit. Those are design choices to document before installation.

Use a decision framework instead of a universal winner

A generator is often the better fit when

  • Outages may last multiple days and a dependable fuel supply is available.
  • Essential loads have high continuous demand or large motor-starting surges.
  • Noise, exhaust, outdoor placement, and regular engine maintenance are acceptable.
  • You need an emergency source without waiting for solar production or grid recharge.

A battery system is often the better fit when

  • Quiet, odorless operation is important, including in dense neighborhoods.
  • The essential-load list is moderate and can be managed within the battery’s usable energy and inverter limits.
  • You want automatic or convenient operation and have suitable charging access.
  • A properly designed solar-plus-storage system can recharge during a prolonged outage.

A combined system may make sense when

  • You need high-demand or multi-day coverage from a generator but want batteries to handle short interruptions quietly.
  • You want solar to recharge storage while retaining fuel backup for poor weather or extended demand.
  • Critical loads need uninterrupted or conditioned power while larger discretionary loads wait for the generator.

Combination systems add equipment, controls, installation complexity, and maintenance. Compare the complete design rather than adding products independently.

A construction-ready planning and installation sequence

  1. Mark critical circuits. Walk the house and label medical, refrigeration, water, heating, communications, lighting, and safety loads. Decide what can remain off.
  2. Collect electrical data. Photograph nameplates, record breaker sizes, and obtain running and startup information for motors and compressors.
  3. Set the outage target. Choose a realistic coverage period, such as an overnight interruption or a multi-day emergency, and identify fuel or recharge access.
  4. Calculate output and energy separately. Check simultaneous running watts and startup surges, then calculate the watt-hours needed over the target period.
  5. Choose the connection method. Decide between direct outlets, selected circuits, or broader integration before comparing generator or battery models.
  6. Have the design reviewed. A qualified electrician should verify transfer equipment, conductors, grounding, neutral configuration, disconnects, permits, and local code requirements.
  7. Confirm safety placement. For a generator, document the outdoor location and the more-than-20-foot separation from windows, doors, and vents. For batteries, document clearances, ventilation or enclosure requirements, and access for service.
  8. Test under realistic loads. With the installer, test startup of the largest motor, operation of essential circuits, transfer behavior, low-fuel or low-charge alerts, and restoration when utility power returns.
  9. Write the operating plan. Keep the load list, shutdown sequence, refueling or recharge procedure, alarm checks, service contacts, and emergency instructions where household members can find them.

Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them

Choosing by advertised peak watts alone

Peak watts do not establish continuous capacity, startup performance, or runtime. Correct the comparison with the exact running and starting requirements of every essential load.

Calling a portable unit “whole home” without a circuit plan

A large-looking generator can still overload when several compressors start together. Define the transfer equipment and backed-up circuits, then verify the system’s continuous and surge ratings.

Using grid-tied solar as an outage promise

Most grid-tied PV shuts down during a utility failure. Confirm the inverter, storage, islanding controls, and operating instructions for the installed system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring refueling or recharge logistics

A runtime number is useful only when fuel can be safely replenished, or when the battery can recharge through an available source. Include weather, daylight, access, and household load scheduling.

Improvising a house connection

Backfeeding through an outlet or using unapproved wiring can energize utility lines and create shock, fire, and equipment hazards. Use a qualified electrician and compliant transfer equipment.

Leaving medical-device needs out of the plan

Medical equipment may require continuous or carefully scheduled power. Coordinate the backup plan with the healthcare provider and utility, and keep a separate contingency plan for an outage that exceeds the system’s tested duration.

Questions to ask an installer or electrician

  • Which circuits are backed up, and what is the maximum simultaneous load?
  • What are the continuous and startup ratings of the complete system?
  • What usable battery energy or documented fuel runtime applies to my load schedule?
  • How will the system recharge or be refueled during a multi-day outage?
  • What happens when the battery is low, fuel is low, or a motor starts?
  • Which permits, inspections, disconnects, transfer equipment, and code requirements apply locally?
  • Where will the generator sit, and how will the more-than-20-foot clearance be maintained?
  • What alarms, maintenance, testing, and replacement intervals must the homeowner follow?
  • How does the system transfer back when utility power returns, and how is accidental reconnection prevented?

The practical way to make the final choice

Obtain comparable proposals using the same written load list, outage target, connection method, and safety requirements. Reject any proposal that supplies only a headline wattage without startup capacity, usable energy or documented runtime, recharge or fuel assumptions, and a circuit plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For short, infrequent outages and modest essential loads, a correctly sized battery can provide quiet, simple coverage. For high-demand or multi-day outages with reliable fuel access, a properly installed generator may provide more sustained energy. Solar can improve a battery system’s resilience only when the inverter, storage, controls, and load plan are designed to operate during a grid failure. The best answer is the design that remains safe, serviceable, and adequate for the loads your household actually needs.
