How to Companion Plant Herbs in the Garden

The best herb companions are usually plants with similar sun, drainage, and watering needs. Here’s how to plan a bed without relying on unproven pest-repellent claims.

Group culinary herbs by the conditions they need—not by a promise that one plant will repel pests for another. Sunlight, soil drainage, moisture, and mature size are the most reliable ways to decide which herbs belong together. Companion planting can also help gardeners use space and manage insects, but evidence for specific pest-control pairings is uneven.

What companion planting can—and cannot—do

Companion planting describes several ways of growing plants near one another to make practical use of space or influence insects. Plants may affect insects through their odors, by providing habitat for predators and parasitoids, or by disrupting the visual cues pests use to find crops. These are possible mechanisms, not proof that every traditional pairing works.

University of Minnesota Extension cautions that some popular pest-repellent recommendations have little research support, and some are contradicted by research. Treat familiar pairing charts as suggestions to evaluate, not universal guarantees. The Extension overview explains the evidence and its limits: Companion planting in home gardens.

Choose herb neighbors by growing needs

Before planting, list the herbs you want and compare their care requirements. Most herbs in the University of Minnesota Extension growing guide need at least six hours of direct sunlight, and many do best in well-drained soil. Moisture preferences differ, however, so herbs that share a container or bed should be compatible in how often they need water.

Ideal for foodies, wellness enthusiasts, and parents seeking screen-free activities.
  • Light: Check that the site meets each herb’s sunlight needs; the cited guide says most herbs need at least six hours of direct sun.
  • Drainage: Many herbs grow best in well-drained soil. Avoid grouping plants in a spot that stays wet if some neighbors need soil to drain freely.
  • Moisture: Many Mediterranean herbs tolerate heat and drier soil once established. Parsley, cilantro, and dill prefer slightly moist soil.
  • Mature size: Leave room for each plant to reach its expected size. Crowding weakens growth, restricts air circulation, and increases disease risk.

These differences often make it more useful to group herbs by care than to arrange them according to a pest-repellent chart. For a fuller overview of light, soil, water, and spacing, see the University of Minnesota Extension guide to growing herbs in home gardens.

Use plant families as context, not a compatibility chart

Plant-family information can help you organize a planting plan, but family membership alone does not establish whether two herbs are beneficial neighbors. The University of Minnesota Extension guide lists basil, oregano, marjoram, rosemary, thyme, lavender, and sage in the mint family. It lists parsley, dill, chervil, cilantro, fennel, and lovage in the carrot family. The Extension page on promoting healthy soil in your garden provides this family context.

What specific pest-pairing findings show

Some studies cited by University of Minnesota Extension report effects in particular crop-and-herb combinations. Their findings are worth distinguishing from broad claims that herbs repel pests throughout a garden.

  • Quality: All herbs seeds packaged by Seed Needs are intended for the current and the following growing seasons. All seeds are stored in a temperature controlled facility that is free of significant amounts of moisture.
  • Basil and tomatoes: A few studies found basil and marigolds effective at reducing thrips in tomatoes. Basil intercropping may also promote tomato growth. These results do not guarantee the same effect in every garden.
  • Sage or thyme with Brussels sprouts: In a greenhouse study, sage and thyme reduced diamondback moth populations on Brussels sprouts.
  • Thyme, onion, and nasturtium with broccoli: A separate Iowa study found these plants helped reduce damage from certain caterpillars.

These observations are crop-specific and, in the Brussels sprouts example, tied to greenhouse conditions. They do not establish that the same herbs will control other pests or protect other crops. The Extension evidence review describes the findings: Companion planting in home gardens.

A practical way to plan an herb bed or container

  1. Choose the herbs you will use. Make a list first, then check each plant’s light, drainage, and moisture preferences in a growing guide.
  2. Sort by care needs. Put herbs with similar watering and drainage needs together. For example, parsley, cilantro, and dill prefer slightly moist soil, while many Mediterranean herbs tolerate drier soil once established.
  3. Check the site. Confirm that the bed or container receives enough direct sunlight and that its soil drains appropriately for the plants you selected.
  4. Plan for mature size. Allow each herb room to grow rather than packing seedlings tightly. Leave enough space for airflow as plants fill out.
  5. Set realistic expectations for pest effects. If you choose a pairing for insect management, look for evidence tied to that specific herb, crop, pest, and growing condition. Do not assume a traditional recommendation is proven.

There is no comprehensive, evidence-based compatibility matrix for every culinary herb. A sound plan starts with matching growing conditions, then treats any proposed pest benefit as a crop-specific possibility rather than a promise.
