A folding room divider can screen a doorway or area from view, but it is not a lock, a security barrier, or a soundproof wall.
Set the access plan with your agent before the open house
Decide which rooms or areas visitors may enter, then make those boundaries explicit to your agent before the event. In Ontario, the Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO) says an open-house plan can include access restrictions and that the host is responsible for following the seller’s directions. That is Ontario regulator guidance, not a universal rule; local requirements and practices vary.
Ask your agent how the event will be managed. RECO suggests discussing whether the agent will attend, ask visitors for identification, escort them, limit the number of people inside at once, check access points afterward, and allow photography or video. These details matter more than a visual screen if your goal is to control where visitors go.
- Identify the rooms or areas that are not part of the showing.
- Agree on how visitors will be told about those boundaries and supervised.
- Decide whether photos or recordings are allowed.
- Confirm how doors and other access points will be checked and the home secured afterward.
North Carolina’s real estate regulator also advises brokers to take precautions because open houses can pose risks to brokers and sellers. Its guidance is specific to North Carolina, but it reinforces the general value of planning supervision and safeguards rather than relying on a divider alone: Conducting a Safe Open House.

Remove sensitive belongings separately from screening the room
A room divider hides a view; it does not protect belongings. RECO advises sellers to remove small valuables, fragile items, medication, bills, credit-card receipts, and bank statements from view. Consider putting personal photographs away as well. Ask your agent what other personal or sensitive items should be removed before visitors arrive.

What a folding room divider can—and cannot—do
A freestanding folding divider is a temporary way to create visual separation without building a permanent wall. It may be useful when you want to screen a bedroom, home office, or belongings from the tour while leaving the rest of the home available to visitors. Screenflex describes its portable dividers as a way to divide open areas and add privacy; the specific coverage depends on the divider’s configuration and the opening you need to screen. Do not treat a movable screen as access control. A visitor may be able to move it or go around it, and it does not create a locked boundary. Screenflex also states that portable dividers do not make a space completely soundproof. Use one for visual screening, not as a guarantee that conversations cannot be heard or that an area is secure. Choose the solution to match the boundary you need
For a simple visual screen, a portable folding divider may be enough if it covers the intended view and your agent can clearly direct visitors away from the area. If you need people not to enter, rely on an agreed access plan and supervision—not on the screen. If the concern is sound, security, or a boundary that must remain fixed, a portable divider is not established as a solution for those needs; discuss alternatives with your agent or an appropriate professional before the showing.
