The squeegee—not extra cleaner or repeated polishing—is what takes the dirty water and dissolved residue off the pane. Finish the edges with a separate, dry microfiber cloth.
This method works well for ordinary residential glass, but tinted glass, window film, decorative glass, and coated panes require the manufacturer’s care instructions first.

What you need
- A rubber window squeegee with a straight, undamaged blade. A replaceable rubber blade is useful because worn edges commonly cause lines and missed strips.
- A microfiber washer or soft microfiber cloth for wetting the glass and loosening soil.
- A bucket of clean water and a small amount of suitable window-cleaning solution, or a commercial glass cleaner used according to its label.
- Several clean, lint-free microfiber cloths—ideally separate cloths for wiping the squeegee blade, drying edges, cleaning frames, and final touch-ups.
- Towels to protect interior sills and floors from drips.
- An extension pole only where it allows you to clean from a stable, safe position. Do not use it as a reason to overreach or improvise an unsafe ladder setup.
A window squeegee is the key tool in this process. Microfiber is useful because its fibers can lift and hold dust, grease, fingerprints, and moisture, but the cloth must be clean and free of grit. Particles trapped in a cloth can scratch delicate surfaces or simply redeposit dirt.
Before you clean: protect the glass and the work area
Check for film, tint, or special coatings
Read the window, glass, or film manufacturer’s care instructions before applying a cleaner or attempting to remove stuck-on material. Coated glass, tinted glass, decorative glass, and window film may have restrictions that do not apply to ordinary untreated glass.

For example, 3M’s film-care guidance prohibits knives, scrapers, brushes, abrasive materials, vigorous rubbing, and heavy pressure on applicable film products. A technique that may be acceptable for bare glass can permanently damage a film or coating.
Choose shade or a cloudy period
Direct sunlight heats the pane and can evaporate the cleaning solution before the squeegee removes it. That leaves concentrated cleaner and loosened soil behind, increasing the chance of streaks. Work in shade when practical, especially on large exterior panes.
Clean the surrounding areas first
Remove curtains and blinds from the work area, clear the sill, and place towels below interior windows. Then dust or vacuum the frames, sills, tracks, crosspieces, and muntins before washing the glass. If you clean these areas afterward, dirty water and debris can run back onto an otherwise finished pane.

Do not wipe dry, gritty glass with a dry cloth or dry squeegee. Wet the surface first so loose particles are suspended and carried away. This is particularly important for exterior windows exposed to sand, construction dust, pollen, or road grime.
The streak-free window-cleaning method
1. Prepare a modest amount of solution
Use enough solution to wet the pane evenly, but do not flood the window. For some window films, 3M describes clean water with a few drops of dish soap as one possible solution. A commercial product should be diluted and applied exactly as its label directs.
Do not assume that every homemade mixture is safe or equally effective. Incorrectly mixed household cleaners can be hazardous, and specially formulated products may perform more consistently. Never mix bleach and ammonia: the combination can produce toxic chloramine gas.

2. Wet the pane and loosen the soil
Apply the solution with a microfiber washer, sponge, or soft cloth. Cover the glass evenly using overlapping strokes. Let the solution soften fingerprints, grease, and dried dirt rather than attacking the pane with aggressive scrubbing.
The aim is to suspend the soil in the liquid so the squeegee can remove it. Scrubbing harder can spread oily residue, create lint, and damage film or specialty surfaces.
3. Squeegee the glass while it is still wet
- Start at an upper corner or along the upper edge of the pane.
- Place the rubber blade firmly against the wet glass.
- Pull with steady, even pressure. For a tall pane, work from top to bottom. For a wide pane, horizontal passes can work well if the entire blade stays in contact with the glass.
- Overlap each pass slightly. This prevents narrow wet strips from remaining between strokes.
- Wipe the blade with a clean, lint-free cloth after every stroke or whenever it collects dirty solution.
- Continue until the pane is clear of standing solution.
The blade should glide on a wet surface. Do not run a dry squeegee across dry glass. If the rubber chatters, skips, or leaves lines, stop and check the blade, the amount of solution, and your pressure before continuing.
4. Dry the perimeter and details
Even a good squeegee leaves a small amount of moisture at corners, edges, muntins, and the bottom of the pane. Use a dry microfiber cloth to detail these areas.
Keep this finishing cloth separate from the cloth used on dirty frames and from the wet washer. A cloth contaminated with grit, oily residue, or cleaner buildup can put streaks back on the glass. Fold the cloth to expose a clean section as you work.
5. Inspect from more than one angle
Look at the pane from inside and outside where possible, changing your viewing angle to separate reflections from genuine streaks. If a mark remains, spot-clean that section with a clean, slightly damp microfiber cloth or repeat the small area with solution.

Avoid repeatedly polishing a dry pane with a used cloth. That usually spreads residue instead of removing it.
Choosing a safe glass cleaner
For a formulated product, check both the cleaner label and the window manufacturer’s care instructions. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Safer Choice program maintains a searchable list of certified products, including window and glass cleaners. Its standard includes product-performance requirements such as cleaning, streaking, and smearing tests, along with ingredient and disclosure criteria.
A Safer Choice listing is a useful screening signal, not a universal approval for every pane. Compatibility with tint, film, coatings, plastic glazing, frames, and seals remains product-specific. If the manufacturer of the window or film names an approved cleaner, follow that guidance first.

Some ammonia-based products can cause streaks or leave a film on certain windows, and ammonia is not automatically suitable for tinted or filmed glass. Avoid abrasive powders, rough scrub pads, steel wool, stiff brushes, and improvised blades unless the specific glass manufacturer expressly permits the method.
Special situations
Window film or tint
Use only the film manufacturer’s recommended cleaning method. In general, soft nonabrasive materials are safer than scrapers or brushes. 3M guidance for applicable films recommends clean water or approved nonabrasive, pH-neutral glass cleaners and a soft microfiber towel for drying. Do not use a knife, razor, abrasive pad, vigorous rubbing, or heavy pressure unless the product instructions specifically allow it.
Paint, tree sap, or hardened debris
Do not automatically scrape the spot. First identify the glass and check whether it has film or a coating. A scraper or solvent that is suitable for bare glass may scratch film, damage a coating, or affect the frame and seals. If the manufacturer permits a removal method, test it in an inconspicuous area first.

Hard-water deposits
Mineral scale may not come off with ordinary window cleaner. Use a hard-water product only after confirming that it is compatible with the glass, frame, coating, and any film. Follow the label, avoid abrasive action, and test an inconspicuous area when the manufacturer permits testing.

Tilt-in windows
Use the manufacturer’s release and tilt procedure. Do not force the sash, balance mechanism, or screen. If the window will not release normally, stop and consult the manufacturer’s instructions.
High exterior windows and skylights
Clean only from a position that gives you secure footing and adequate control of the tool. A properly designed extension pole can help with reachable high glass, but it does not make every height safe to clean from the ground.
For work that requires a ladder, follow the ladder manufacturer’s instructions and applicable safety guidance. OSHA emphasizes keeping ladder areas clear, using ladders only for their intended purpose, maintaining secure footing, and following placement and load requirements. Hire a professional rather than overreaching, standing unsafely, working near hazards, or attempting exterior skylight work without suitable access equipment.

Shade the glass → dust frames and sills → wet the pane → loosen soil with a washer → squeegee with overlapping passes → wipe the blade between strokes → dry edges with clean microfiber → inspect and spot-correct.

For a construction or renovation project, clean the glass only after nearby dusty work has finished where possible. If there is paint, mortar, adhesive, silicone, or other construction residue, identify the glazing type before selecting a removal method. Do not treat specialty glass or film as ordinary bare glass.
