Clean beneath a tree by hand-pulling weeds, leaving ordinary leaf litter where it will not smother plants, and using a shallow layer of wood-chip mulch if exposed roots make mowing difficult. Keep mulch off the trunk and root flare. Avoid tilling, cutting roots, piling on soil, or repeatedly compacting the area: most tree roots grow close to the surface and extend well beyond the canopy.
Why the ground under a tree needs different care
Treat the root zone as part of the tree, not as ordinary lawn. Most roots are near the soil surface, where they can access oxygen, and many extend to or beyond the canopy edge. Vermont Extension says most tree roots tend to be in the top 12 inches of soil; Wisconsin Extension describes the majority as growing horizontally in the top 4–15 inches. These are general descriptions, not a map of any one tree’s roots. Vermont Extension; Wisconsin Extension
That shallow, broad root system is vulnerable to soil compaction and physical damage. Repeated foot traffic, vehicles, heavy equipment, and work that disturbs soil can all be a problem. Before cleaning, look for exposed roots, the root flare—the widening area where the trunk meets the roots—and the route people typically use through the yard. Keep vehicles and stored materials away from the root zone where possible.
Choose a surface treatment that fits the site
| Option | Best fit | Benefit | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organic wood-chip mulch | Exposed roots, awkward-to-mow areas, or a lower-maintenance surface | Reduces the need to mow near roots and helps suppress weeds and retain moisture | Use a shallow layer; keep it away from the trunk and root flare, and check existing depth before adding more. Wisconsin Extension; Purdue Extension; Maryland Extension |
| Shade-tolerant groundcover | A site where living cover is wanted and the plants suit local light and moisture | Once established, it can compete with weeds and cover the soil | Planting can injure roots; some species spread aggressively or do not tolerate foot traffic. Wisconsin Extension; Maryland Extension |
| Existing leaf litter | A mature tree in a woodland-style bed | Leaves can decompose in place, insulate plants, and support wildlife | Thin unusually deep piles if they smother plants or raise a concern about leaf infection. Maryland Extension |
| Turf | A site where lawn use matters and roots are not being struck or exposed | Maintains a conventional lawn surface | Mowing close to roots can injure them, and traffic can compact soil. Vermont Extension; Wisconsin Extension; UF/IFAS Extension |
Choose based on how much installation will disturb the roots, the ongoing mowing and weeding needed, foot traffic, and whether the trunk flare will remain visible. Local climate, soil, tree species, and site use affect which planting will work.

Clean up without disturbing roots
- Assess the area first. Locate visible roots and the root flare, check existing mulch depth, identify plants you want to keep, and note regular walking routes. Remember that roots can extend beyond the canopy.
- Pull weeds by hand. Work carefully around desirable plants and roots. Do not rototill or cultivate the whole area. If adding groundcover, hand-dig small planting pockets between roots rather than opening a continuous bed.
- Mulch exposed roots or troublesome turf. For surface-root coverage, Purdue Extension recommends 2–3 inches of wood mulch. General recommendations vary: Maryland Extension gives 1–3 inches and Vermont Extension gives 2–4 inches. A shallow 2–3-inch layer is a cautious practical range; do not stack new mulch on top of an already deep layer. Purdue Extension; Maryland Extension; Vermont Extension
- Leave the trunk and root flare uncovered. Keep mulch several inches back. Maryland Extension specifies about 3 inches of clearance, while Vermont Extension advises 3–6 inches. Keep a visible gap and taper the mulch away from the tree instead of piling it into a cone. Mulch against bark can contribute to disease, decay, and poor root conditions.
- Handle fallen leaves selectively. In a suitable woodland-style bed, leave ordinary leaves to decompose. If a deep pile is smothering sensitive plants or creating concern about leaf infection, gently move some and reuse it in another bed or compost it.
- Give regular traffic a defined route. Keep vehicles, heavy equipment, stored materials, and repeated foot traffic off the root zone where possible. Where people cross regularly, maintain a designated path instead of relying on fragile groundcover to tolerate traffic.
Avoid fixes that trade a tidy surface for root damage
- Do not scalp or cut surface roots. Mower strikes, cutting, and grinding can injure roots. If roots are exposed or make mowing unsafe, convert the area to mulch rather than trying to remove or bury them. Purdue Extension calls mulch the best solution for bothersome surface roots. Purdue Extension
- Do not till beneath the tree. Rototilling and other broad soil disturbance can damage roots.
- Do not add a heavy soil layer over roots. A thick soil cap can impair oxygen access. Wisconsin Extension notes that a very shallow layer—about half an inch—may make mowing easier in some cases, but warns that too much can suffocate roots. Purdue Extension advises against heavy topsoil cover as a surface-root fix. For general cleanup, favor mulch over adding soil. Wisconsin Extension; Purdue Extension
- Do not pile mulch against the trunk. Keep bark and the root flare visible rather than building a mulch volcano.
- Do not compact the area with repeated use. Redirect foot traffic and keep vehicles and heavy equipment away where possible.
When to call an arborist
Cleaning methods cannot diagnose a tree’s stability. Contact a certified arborist if you see cavities or swellings at the root collar, fungal growth around the base, or have concerns about whether the tree is stable. UF/IFAS Extension identifies these as signs warranting attention. UF/IFAS Extension
These recommendations are general U.S. Extension guidance, not a site-specific diagnosis. Adjust planting and maintenance to local climate, soil drainage, tree species, and how the area is used.
