A 1:1 mixture of distilled white vinegar and water is one documented option for windows; a labeled commercial glass cleaner is another. Mirrors, tinted windows, and coated glass need different precautions, so do not apply one recipe to every pane.
The short method for streak-free glass
Streaks are usually left-behind moisture, soil, or cleaner residue. The most reliable routine is controlled rather than complicated:

- Identify the surface. Decide whether you are cleaning an ordinary window, a mirror, tinted automotive glass, or glass with a protective coating. Check the glass, tint, coating, or mirror maker’s care instructions first.
- Choose a compatible cleaner. For ordinary windows, use a labeled glass cleaner or the documented Scotch-Brite mixture of one cup distilled white vinegar and one cup water. For a concentrate such as Simple Green PRO Glass Cleaner, follow its label; the routine dilution listed is one part concentrate to 30 parts water.
- Use cool glass. Simple Green’s instructions state, “For best results, clean glass surfaces when cool.” Keep the work out of strong direct heat when possible.
- Work in manageable sections. Apply enough solution to loosen soil, but do not cover more glass than you can wipe before the liquid dries.
- Wipe with clean, lint-free material. A clean microfiber or other lint-free cloth is supported by the manufacturer directions. Fold the cloth so you have several dry faces available.
- Dry and buff. Turn to a dry part of the cloth and remove the remaining film. On a large pane, a squeegee can be used as the drying step if the product directions permit it.
The cloth must be clean enough to pick up soil rather than redistribute it. Turn or replace it when it becomes visibly dirty or wet enough to leave a film. This practical rule matters as much as the choice of spray.

Why glass looks streaky after cleaning
Cleaner dries before it is removed
When a wet film dries on the pane, dissolved soil and cleaner ingredients can remain in lines or patches. Working on cool glass and dividing a large surface into sections gives you time to wipe the solution away while it is still wet. If a section has already dried, lightly re-wet that section and wipe it again rather than adding cleaner to the entire pane.

The cloth is carrying soil or moisture
A damp, dirty cloth can spread fingerprints and dust across a clean area. Use a fresh cloth for the final drying pass, or expose a clean face by refolding the cloth. Lint-free microfiber is the most consistently named material in the window-cleaning directions, although Simple Green also lists a paper towel or squeegee as options.
The product does not suit the surface
Ordinary window instructions are not automatically mirror-care instructions. A cleaner that is acceptable on a window may be unsuitable for a mirror’s edges, backing, or silvered layer. Tinted automotive glass and protective coatings can also have compatibility requirements. Surface-specific directions take priority over a general streak-removal recipe.
Identify the glass before choosing a cleaner
Ordinary household windows
For uncoated household window glass, a glass cleaner used exactly as labeled or a vinegar-water window mixture are documented choices. Scotch-Brite’s window method calls for equal volumes: one cup of distilled white vinegar plus one cup of water. Distilled white vinegar is specified in that method; do not silently substitute an unspecified vinegar or assume the same recipe is approved for every type of glass.
Mirrors
Mirrors require edge control as well as a clean face. Virginia Glass Products Corporation’s mirror-care guidance recommends warm water and a soft, lint-free cloth. It warns against vinegar- or ammonia-containing commercial mirror cleaners and says to keep liquid away from joints, edges, and backing. Apply very little moisture, wipe the face gently, and dry the perimeter rather than allowing liquid to run into the frame or behind the mirror.
Tinted car windows and protective coatings
Compatibility depends on the particular tint or coating. SC Johnson describes its ammonia-free glass cleaner as suitable for tinted car windows and glass with protective coatings and directs users to spray it on the cloth. That is a manufacturer statement about that named product, not proof that every ammonia-free cleaner is safe for every film or coating. Check the vehicle, film, or coating maker’s instructions and spot-test an inconspicuous area when directed.
Unknown, newly treated, or specialty glass
If you cannot identify a film, hydrophobic treatment, decorative layer, or other coating, pause before using vinegar, ammonia, abrasive products, or a strong concentrate. Rust-Oleum’s glass-cleaner directions include a spot-test instruction. A small test area can reveal incompatibility before you expose the entire pane, but the surface maker’s care sheet remains the controlling guidance.

Cleaner and cloth choices at a glance
| Surface or task | Supported choice | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary windows | Glass cleaner used according to its label, or one cup distilled white vinegar mixed with one cup water | The vinegar recipe is the Scotch-Brite window method; maker instructions for the actual glass take priority. |
| Routine wiping and drying | Clean microfiber or another lint-free cloth | Use a clean face for the final pass; the directions do not establish that one cloth weave is independently superior. |
| Large glass areas | Squeegee for the drying step | Listed as an option in Simple Green’s product directions; the directions do not establish comparative performance. |
| Tinted car glass or protective coating | An ammonia-free product may be appropriate; SC Johnson describes this use for its named product | Do not generalize that statement to all ammonia-free cleaners or all films. |
| Mirrors | Warm water and a soft, lint-free cloth | Virginia Glass Products Corporation warns against vinegar and ammonia-containing commercial mirror cleaners and against wetting edges or backing. |
| Unknown or specialty glass | Surface-maker-approved product and a spot test where instructed | Rust-Oleum’s directions include spot testing; compatibility cannot be inferred from appearance alone. |
Step-by-step process for windows
1. Read the care instructions
Look for labels on the window, film, frame, or coating. Confirm whether the pane is tinted, treated, laminated, or otherwise protected. If the instructions prohibit a solvent or specify a particular cleaner, follow them instead of the general method below.

2. Remove loose dust first
Use a dry, clean cloth to pick up loose surface dust before applying liquid. This reduces the amount of grit that becomes wet and dragged across the pane. Do not use a cloth that has already collected oily fingerprints for this dry pass.
3. Prepare only the cleaner you can use
For the Scotch-Brite window recipe, measure one cup of distilled white vinegar and one cup of water. If you use a ready-to-use cleaner, do not dilute it unless the label says to do so. If you use Simple Green PRO Glass Cleaner concentrate, its routine dilution is one part concentrate to 30 parts water; measure the ratio rather than estimating it in the bottle.
4. Start with cool glass
Clean when the pane is cool to the touch and avoid letting the solution sit in hot sun. Simple Green specifically gives the instruction, “For best results, clean glass surfaces when cool.” Heat can shorten the time available to wipe the solution before it dries.
5. Divide the pane into sections
Choose sections small enough to wet, wipe, and dry without leaving a drying edge. On a tall window, work from the top down so drips do not run onto an area you have already finished. Keep the section boundaries slightly overlapping so no narrow strip is missed.

6. Apply a controlled amount
Use a light, even application. For coated or tinted glass, follow the product’s direction to spray the cloth rather than the pane when specified; SC Johnson gives that instruction for its ammonia-free product. Avoid flooding frames, seals, mirror edges, or joints.

7. Wipe while the surface is wet
Use a clean microfiber or lint-free cloth and cover the entire section. Lift fingerprints and soil instead of repeatedly smearing them across the same area. Refold the cloth as soon as the working face becomes dirty or saturated.
8. Make a dry finishing pass
Turn to a dry cloth face and buff away the remaining moisture. Inspect from two angles; changing the viewing angle can reveal a thin film that is not visible straight on. If you see a line, re-wet only that line or section and dry it with a clean face.
9. Finish frames and sills separately
Keep runoff from collecting in seals, joints, and sills. Wipe those areas with a suitable, barely damp cloth and dry them. On mirrors, be especially strict about keeping moisture away from the perimeter and backing.
How to use the documented cleaner options
Distilled vinegar and water for windows
Scotch-Brite’s documented window method uses one cup of distilled white vinegar with one cup of water. Mix the measured amounts, apply the solution to an ordinary window, and remove it with a glass-cleaning cloth. Treat this as a window-specific option, not a universal glass recipe: Virginia Glass Products Corporation’s mirror-care guidance says not to use vinegar cleaners on mirrors.
Ready-to-use glass cleaner
Follow the product label for application, dwell time, and drying. A ready-to-use formula avoids measuring a dilution, but it can still leave residue if too much is applied or if it dries before wiping. Use the smallest amount that loosens the soil and complete the dry pass with a clean cloth.
Concentrated glass cleaner
Measure the dilution exactly. For Simple Green PRO Glass Cleaner, the routine dilution is one part concentrate to 30 parts water. The same directions advise working on cool glass, using manageable sections, and drying with a lint-free cloth, paper towel, or squeegee. A stronger mixture is not automatically better; use a different ratio only when the label specifically calls for it.

Cloth technique that prevents rework
Use separate wet and dry faces
Fold a microfiber cloth into quarters. Begin with one face for the wet wipe, then turn to a dry face for finishing. As each face becomes damp or dirty, refold again. This creates a simple separation between lifting soil and removing the final film.
Keep clean cloths away from oily laundry products
A cloth that feels soft can still carry detergent, fabric softener, polish, or grease. Reserve lint-free cloths for glass work, wash them according to their care instructions, and store them where they will not pick up dust. The manufacturer’s directions support clean microfiber or lint-free material; they do not establish a particular laundering formula.
Know when paper towel or a squeegee makes sense
Simple Green lists paper towel and a squeegee as drying alternatives. Paper towel can be convenient for a small pane, while a squeegee can remove liquid efficiently from a larger area when its rubber edge is clean and intact. Neither option is identified as independently better than microfiber, so choose based on the surface, size, and the product label.
Special instructions for mirrors
Use the conservative mirror routine when the pane is a household mirror or when its construction is unknown:
- Use warm water and a soft, lint-free cloth, following Virginia Glass Products Corporation’s mirror-care recommendation.
- Dampen the cloth rather than saturating the mirror. Excess liquid can travel to the edge, joint, frame, or backing.
- Wipe the reflective face gently, then use a dry part of the cloth to remove all visible moisture.
- Dry the perimeter separately and immediately. Do not allow a wet line to sit against the backing.
- Do not transfer the vinegar-water window recipe or an ammonia-containing commercial mirror cleaner to the mirror unless its maker expressly approves it.
If the mirror has a special finish or is installed in a wet location, consult its specific care instructions before using any chemical product.

Ammonia-free labeling is useful information, but it is not a blanket guarantee. SC Johnson describes its ammonia-free product for tinted car windows and protective coatings and instructs users to spray it on the cloth. Use that claim only for the named product and the surfaces covered by its directions. A different film, factory coating, or aftermarket treatment may have different restrictions.

Before cleaning, identify the film or coating if possible. Follow its approved product list, application method, and spot-test requirement. Apply the cloth-first method when the product directions call for it, use light pressure, and stop if the test area changes appearance.
Large panes and construction-maintenance work
For a large window, plan the work so the solution cannot dry on an unattended section. Divide the pane into reachable strips, keep a clean dry cloth available, and use a squeegee only after confirming that the cleaner’s directions allow it. Wipe the squeegee blade between passes so collected soil is not drawn back across the glass. Complete edges and corners with a lint-free cloth rather than forcing liquid into seals or frames.
On a building with many panes, stage more clean cloths than you expect to need. A cloth that is acceptable for the first window may be too wet or dirty for the finishing pass on the next one. The goal is consistent removal of the wet film, not a larger quantity of spray.
Troubleshooting streaks and residue
| What you see | Likely cause | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Parallel lines after drying | The solution dried before the wipe or a squeegee edge was dirty | Re-wet only the affected section, wipe while wet, then finish with a clean dry cloth or a clean squeegee edge. |
| Cloudy film over the whole pane | Too much product or a cloth carrying residue | Use less solution, switch to a clean lint-free cloth, and make a complete dry pass. |
| Smears return when viewed from an angle | The final moisture was not removed | Buff with a dry cloth face and inspect from more than one angle. |
| Dust or lint remains | The wiping material is shedding or already dirty | Replace it with a clean lint-free cloth and keep dry finishing cloths separate from used ones. |
| Mirror edge looks damaged or damp | Liquid reached the edge, joint, or backing | Stop wet cleaning at the perimeter, dry the area immediately, and follow the mirror maker’s care guidance. |
| Tinted or coated area changes appearance | The cleaner is incompatible or was applied contrary to the coating directions | Stop, rinse or wipe only as the surface maker directs, and do not continue until compatibility is confirmed. |
What the available guidance does—and does not—prove
The manufacturer instructions support cool-glass cleaning, manageable sections, specific dilution quantities, microfiber or lint-free wiping, paper-towel and squeegee drying options, mirror edge precautions, an ammonia-free option for the named tinted/coated-glass product, and spot testing. They do not provide independent comparative testing that proves one cloth, cleaner, wiping pattern, or drying tool is universally superior.
For that reason, choose by surface compatibility first, then by the amount of glass and the drying method you can control. A simple cleaner used on the correct surface and removed completely is safer than a stronger product applied indiscriminately.
