The safest way to clean a glass stovetop is to turn the controls off, let the surface cool, remove loose food with a soft cloth, and use a cleaner labeled for glass or ceramic-glass cooktops when residue remains. Wipe away every trace of cleaner and buff the surface dry. For burned-on food, use a ceramic-glass scraper only if your appliance manual permits it: some coated cooktops specifically prohibit scrapers.
Always treat your appliance manual as the final authority. “Glass stovetop” can mean ordinary ceramic glass, induction glass, or a coated surface, and their cleaning instructions are not identical.

Before you start: identify the surface and check the manual
Find the model number and consult the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions if possible. Look specifically for terms such as ceramic glass, induction, WipeClean, or coated cooktop. A scraper that is suitable for one standard ceramic-glass model may scratch or damage a special coating.
For example, GE recommends ceramic-glass cleaning cream and compatible pads for its glass cooktops, while Whirlpool recommends a nonabrasive cleaner and soft pad for standard ceramic-glass surfaces. Whirlpool’s WipeClean guidance, however, says not to use a scraper on that coating. See the relevant GE glass-cooktop cleaning guidance and Whirlpool cleaning instructions before choosing tools.
#1 Best Overall
- 10 oz Bottle Weiman Glass Cook Top Cleaner & Polish is specially formulated to clean, shine and protect glass/ceramic smooth top ranges. #1 in its category and recommended by major range top manufacturers, Weiman Glass Cook Top Cleaner easily removes burned on foods and will not scratch delicate glass/ceramic surfaces. Use regularly to keep new ranges looking beautiful or to bring older ranges back to life.
Important: If you cannot find the manual, use the conservative method: switch off all controls, wait until the surface is cool enough to touch safely, and clean with a soft cloth and a product specifically labeled for glass or ceramic-glass cooktops. Do not assume a razor scraper is safe.
Supplies you may need
- Paper towels, a microfiber cloth, or another soft, clean cloth
- Warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap for ordinary spills
- A nonabrasive pad or cooktop-cleaning pad
- A cleaner labeled for glass or ceramic-glass cooktops
- A soft, dry cloth for buffing
- A ceramic-glass cooktop scraper—but only if the appliance manual allows it
- An oven mitt for dealing with a hot sugary spill
A glass cooktop cleaner is more appropriate than a general-purpose kitchen or window cleaner because it is formulated for the surface and the residue commonly left by cookware. Choose a product whose label and manufacturer instructions agree with your appliance. A ceramic-glass cooktop cleaning kit may be convenient when you need cleaner and compatible pads together, but a kit is not automatically suitable for every coating.

Routine cleaning: the seven-step method
1. Turn everything off and let the cooktop cool
Switch off all surface controls and allow the cooktop to cool. Do not begin by wiping a hot surface with a wet cloth unless your specific manual gives instructions for a particular hot-spill emergency. The general safe approach is to wait until the glass is cool enough to touch without risk of burns.
Remove pans, utensils, and trivets. Check that no heating zone remains active, especially on an induction model where the glass may not look hot even though the cookware has been heating.
2. Remove loose crumbs and food
Use a paper towel, microfiber cloth, or soft kitchen towel to lift crumbs, loose grains, and other dry debris. Do not drag a gritty pile across the glass; trapped particles can act like abrasive grit.
3. Soften ordinary residue
For everyday splashes and food film, dampen the area with warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap. Let the moisture loosen the soil rather than scrubbing aggressively. Whirlpool’s WipeClean guidance recommends soaking ordinary soil with water for at least five minutes. Heavier residue may need a longer soak—approximately 20 to 25 minutes in its heavy-soil guidance and up to 45 minutes for extremely heavy soil.

4. Apply a compatible cooktop cleaner when film remains
If the surface still has grease, cloudy film, mineral residue, or stuck-on marks, apply a small amount of cleaner labeled for glass or ceramic-glass cooktops. Spread it with a nonabrasive pad or paper towel, following the product label. Some creams are intended to haze before removal; do not leave a product on the surface longer than its instructions allow.
Work gently over the residue. Then remove the cleaner completely with a clean, damp cloth. Finish with a soft dry cloth and buff until no cloudy film remains. Leaving cleaner residue behind can make the cooktop look streaky and may attract more soil.
A nonabrasive cooktop pad can be useful for applying approved cream without using a coarse sponge. The pad must still be compatible with your model; “nonabrasive” on a product listing is not a substitute for checking the appliance instructions.
5. Inspect the surface under good light
Look across the cooktop from several angles. If you see streaks, repeat the clean-water wipe and dry buff. If you see a raised, hardened spot, treat it as burned-on residue rather than applying more pressure with a cloth.
How to remove burned-on food
First confirm that your manual permits scraping. Standard ceramic-glass cooktops often allow a scraper designed for ceramic glass, but Whirlpool says scrapers may damage its WipeClean coating. If the manual prohibits scraping, use its specified soaking and cleaning procedure instead.
Scraper warning: Never generalize scraper advice to every glass stovetop. Use a ceramic-glass cooktop scraper only on a model and surface for which the manufacturer permits it.
On a compatible standard ceramic-glass surface:
- Let the cooktop cool unless the manual gives a specific instruction for removing a hot spill.
- Apply a small amount of approved cooktop cleaner if the manufacturer directs you to keep the residue lubricated.
- Hold the designated scraper at the angle specified by your manual. GE guidance commonly describes approximately 45 degrees, while an older GE manual specifies approximately 30 degrees; Whirlpool’s standard ceramic-glass guidance describes approximately 45 degrees. There is no universal angle.
- Use controlled strokes with light, even pressure. Do not stab at the spot or force the blade across dry grit.
- Use only a clean, sharp, undamaged scraper blade. GE warns not to use a dull or nicked blade.
- Wipe away loosened residue, apply compatible cleaner with a nonabrasive pad, and remove all cleaner with a damp cloth.
- Buff the glass dry with a soft cloth.
Do not substitute a kitchen knife, a loose razor blade held by hand, steel wool, or an improvised metal tool. If the spot will not release with the permitted method, stop rather than increasing pressure; the mark may be damage rather than removable food.

What to do about sugary spills
Jelly, syrup, candy, fudge, and other high-sugar mixtures are an exception because they can permanently mark glass if they cool and harden. Do not simply leave a sugary spill until the cooktop is cold.
Follow the appliance manual’s hot-spill procedure. GE’s guidance says to turn off the surface units, remove the hot pan while wearing an oven mitt, move the spill toward a cool area with a cooktop razor scraper, and lift it away with paper towels. Do not use the surface again until all residue is gone. Once the area has cooled, deal with any remaining film only as the manual directs.
If you are not certain that scraping is permitted on your model, do not improvise during a hot spill. Use the manufacturer’s support instructions or contact the manufacturer for model-specific guidance.
Melted plastic, porcelain, and other bonded material
Melted plastic and porcelain can bond to the glass. Hardened material may be impossible to remove without causing further damage. GE notes that pitting or indentation from this type of damage can require replacement of the cooktop glass and service; this is not the same problem as a removable layer of food.

Turn off the appliance and follow the manual rather than attacking bonded material with a knife or aggressive abrasive. If the glass is pitted, indented, cracked, or visibly chipped, stop using the affected area and arrange qualified service. Do not operate a cooktop with damaged glass unless the manufacturer has specifically confirmed that it is safe.
White, metallic, and black marks: residue or damage?
White or cloudy marks
White marks may be mineral deposits, cooked-on cleaner, or residue from cookware. Use a compatible cooktop-cleaning cream as directed, then wipe it away and buff dry. Do not assume that a cloudy appearance is a scratch until you have removed residue properly.

Metallic or gray marks
Aluminum or copper cookware can leave metallic-looking marks on glass. An approved cleaning cream may remove some of these deposits. Use less pressure, not more, if the mark does not improve.
Black marks and lines
Black residue may be burned food or cookware transfer. However, rough, nicked, or gouged pan bottoms can scratch the surface, and scratching may not be reversible. A mark that remains after careful cleaning and an approved treatment may be physical damage rather than dirt.

Unless your appliance manual expressly says otherwise, do not use:
- Steel wool or metal scouring pads
- Coarse or abrasive sponges
- Abrasive powders or gritty cleaners
- Chlorine bleach
- Rust remover
- Ammonia
- Glass-window cleaner
- Knives, unapproved razor blades, or improvised scrapers
Also avoid using the cooktop as a cutting board, placing gritty objects on it, or sliding pots and pans across the glass. Whirlpool warns that harsh chemicals, aggressive particles, coarse sponges, excessive pressure, and sliding cookware can damage a glass top.
Vinegar and baking soda are sometimes presented as household alternatives. Manufacturer guidance treats these methods as model-dependent rather than universally safe, so use them only if your manual specifically permits them. They should not replace an approved cooktop-cleaning product when the manufacturer requires one.

How often should you clean a glass stovetop?
Wipe up spills after each use when practical, once the surface is safe to handle. Routine removal prevents food from repeatedly heating onto the glass. Use a deeper clean with compatible cooktop cleaner when film or stubborn soil develops. Whirlpool describes cleaner use on a biweekly or monthly basis for harder-to-remove soil and polishing, but schedules vary by household, cookware, and manufacturer. Treat that as a maintenance suggestion, not a universal requirement.
Prevention: keep the surface easier to clean
- Use clean, dry cookware so water rings and food residue are not baked onto the glass.
- Inspect pan bottoms for rough spots, burrs, gouges, and trapped grit.
- Lift cookware instead of sliding it.
- Do not place plastic, foil, paper, or other meltable material on an active or hot surface unless the manual specifically allows it.
- Clean small spills before they carbonize, while observing burn safety.
- Keep abrasive cleaners and coarse scrubbers away from the cooktop.
- Use only manufacturer-approved or label-compatible cleaners and tools.
When cleaning is not enough
Stop cleaning and seek manufacturer or qualified appliance service if you find a crack, chip, deep gouge, pitting, indentation, exposed damage, or a mark that appears to be part of the glass rather than residue. A damaged cooktop can be a burn, electrical, or breakage hazard. Do not keep scraping in an attempt to restore a surface that is physically damaged.
For model-specific instructions, start with the manufacturer’s support page. GE’s guidance on removing marks and burned-on residue explains its scraper and sugary-spill procedure. Older models may specify different scraper angles or tools, so the instructions for the exact appliance take precedence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a razor scraper on any glass stovetop?
No. A designated ceramic-glass scraper is permitted on some standard ceramic-glass cooktops, but certain coated surfaces prohibit scrapers because they may scratch the coating. Check the exact appliance manual first. Never use a kitchen knife or an unprotected improvised razor.

How do I clean an induction cooktop?
Most induction cooktops have a glass or ceramic-glass surface, so the baseline method—controls off, surface cool, soft cloth, compatible nonabrasive cleaner, thorough rinsing, and drying—often applies. However, induction models and coatings differ, so follow the model manual, especially for scrapers and hot-spill procedures.
How often should I clean my glass stovetop?
Wipe ordinary spills after each use when the surface is safe to handle. Use an approved cooktop cleaner for film or stubborn soil as needed. Some manufacturer guidance suggests deeper cleaning about every two weeks or monthly, but the correct frequency depends on the model and how often you cook.
Can scratches on a glass stovetop be removed?
Not reliably. Some white, metallic, or black marks are removable residue, but rough cookware can cause scratches and melted plastic or porcelain can cause pitting or indentation. If careful cleaning does not change the mark, treat it as possible surface damage rather than applying more abrasive force.
The Bottom Line
For routine cleaning, use a cool surface, a soft cloth, and a cleaner made for glass or ceramic-glass cooktops. For burned-on food, scrape only when the manual permits it; for sugary spills, act promptly and follow the manufacturer’s hot-spill instructions. Avoid abrasives, harsh chemicals, sliding cookware, and any tool that the appliance manual does not approve.
