Blot fresh spills promptly with a clean, soft white cloth, test only a treatment the maker allows, and do not saturate the upholstery. If the code is missing or unclear, or a stain or odor persists, ask an upholstery specialist to assess the material and cushion construction.
Start With the Couch’s Care Instructions
Look for a care tag under a seat cushion or beneath the couch, or search the manufacturer’s care page for your specific model. Ashley Furniture says upholstered products carry a tag with a cleaning code, commonly located under a seat cushion or beneath the unit. Codes and instructions vary by maker, so use the directions for your couch rather than assuming a general cleaning recipe will be safe. Ashley Furniture’s cleaning-code guidance gives examples of that variation.
Some instructions expressly prohibit water. For example, Bernhardt’s Code S directions call for a water-free dry-cleaning solvent, a pretest on an inconspicuous area, and no saturation. That is a maker-specific example, not a rule to apply to every couch. If you cannot identify the code or understand the instructions, contact the maker or an upholstery specialist before experimenting.
Respond to Spills Carefully
- Blot promptly. Use a clean, soft white cloth to absorb a fresh spill. Avoid aggressive scrubbing, which may spread the spill or affect the surface.
- Check the care instructions. Before using water or a product, confirm that the maker permits it for your couch’s material and cleaning code.
- Pretest if instructed. If the maker’s directions call for a spot test, test in a small, inconspicuous area and check for a change before proceeding.
- Do not saturate the upholstery. If the spill has reached the cushion interior, or the stain remains after maker-approved care, ask a qualified upholstery cleaner what the fabric and construction can tolerate.
There is no universal home recipe established for every stain, biological spill, grease mark, dye, or odor. Avoid treating a cleaner, solvent, enzyme product, steam, or extraction method as safe for every couch. If an odor persists after the source is removed and maker-approved care is followed, seek professional advice.

Care Codes and Material Differences
Read the full instructions that accompany the code; the letter alone may not answer every question. Manufacturer guidance distinguishes among cleaning methods, and the same approach should not be assumed safe across different fabrics or finishes.
| What to check | Why it matters | Safe next step |
|---|---|---|
| Code W, S, or SW | Care instructions differ, and a method allowed for one code may be unsuitable for another. | Follow the specific couch maker’s directions; for example, Bernhardt says its Code S upholstery should not be cleaned with water. |
| Leather upholstery | Leather care is material- and maker-specific. | Use the instructions for that leather. Bernhardt’s example for a stained area calls for a lightly dampened cloth and mild, non-detergent soap-and-water solution; do not treat this as universal advice. |
| Missing or unclear instructions | You cannot reliably choose a compatible treatment without knowing what the maker permits. | Ask the manufacturer or an upholstery specialist before applying liquid, solvent, steam, or an extractor. |
| Delicate or unfamiliar material | Fiber, construction, and finish affect what the upholstery can tolerate. | Have a specialist assess it before treatment. |
When to Call an Upholstery Specialist
Consider professional care when the couch is broadly soiled, the cleaning code is missing or unclear, a stain or odor persists, or contamination may have reached the cushion interior. These are cautious escalation points: the right method depends on the upholstery and its construction, and a surface treatment may not address a problem inside a cushion.

Bernhardt recommends contacting an IICRC-certified firm specializing in upholstery cleaning when overall soiling calls for professional care. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) describes its current ANSI/IICRC S300, 2025 second edition, as a professional upholstery cleaning standard covering matters including fibers and construction, inspection, methods, leather, and spot and stain removal. IICRC states, “IICRC S300 is a procedural standard.” Read about the IICRC S300 standard.
When choosing a provider, explain the couch’s care code, the stain or odor, and whether the cushion interior may be involved. Ask how the provider will assess the fabric and construction before selecting a method. IICRC lists upholstery and fabric cleaning, leather cleaning, and odor control among its certification areas; certification options can change. See IICRC’s certifications.

FAQ
Where can I find my couch’s cleaning code?
Check under a seat cushion or beneath the couch, and look up the specific model on the manufacturer’s care page. Ashley Furniture notes that tags are commonly found in those locations. If you cannot find or interpret the instructions, ask the maker or an upholstery specialist.
Can I use water on Code S upholstery?
Do not assume it is safe. Bernhardt’s Code S instructions say to use a water-free dry-cleaning solvent, pretest an inconspicuous area, avoid saturation, and not use water. Follow the instructions for your own couch, since makers’ directions vary.
