Clean a coffee maker according to its type and model: wash removable parts and clear away coffee residue routinely, then descale only as the manufacturer directs. Descaling removes mineral deposits; it does not replace cleaning a drip brewer’s carafe and basket or an espresso machine’s group head and steam wand. The title’s reference to baristas is not supported by attributable interviews, so the guidance below is limited to published manufacturer instructions.
Cleaning and descaling do different jobs
Used grounds, coffee oils, and residue collect on removable parts and brewing surfaces. Mineral deposits, often called scale, build up as water passes through a machine. Washing parts addresses residue; descaling addresses mineral buildup. A clean-looking machine may still need descaling, while a descale cycle does not necessarily clean every removable part.
There is no single cleaning solution or cycle that is right for every coffee maker. Before adding vinegar, descaler, or any other cleaning agent, check the manual for your exact model. The manual takes precedence on cleaning buttons, ratios, filter handling, and rinse cycles.
How to clean a standard drip coffee maker
- Remove the grounds. Discard the used filter and grounds after brewing.
- Wash removable parts. Clean the carafe and filter basket as directed in the manual. If the reservoir is removable, follow the model’s instructions for cleaning it.
- Use only a manufacturer-approved cleaning method. Cuisinart describes a vinegar-and-water cleaning brew cycle as one general approach, and also describes a baking-soda method for removable reservoirs. These are Cuisinart-published options, not universal directions for other brands or models. Follow your machine’s stated proportions and procedure.
- Rinse as directed. Cuisinart recommends running a clean-water cycle after its vinegar method; some model manuals may call for additional rinse cycles. Follow the exact manual rather than assuming one rinse is enough.
How to descale a coffee maker
Descaling is intended to remove mineral deposits from the water path and heating components. Cuisinart suggests descaling every one to three months depending on water hardness; that is general Cuisinart guidance, not a universal schedule. Use your model’s alerts and manual to determine timing and steps.

A ready-made coffee maker descaling solution, tablet, or liquid may be an option, but compatibility matters more than convenience. Check that the product is suitable for your specific machine and follow both the machine manual and the product directions. Cuisinart lists descaling tablets or liquids as possible options; this does not establish that any one product works with every brewer.
Espresso machines need more than descaling
Espresso-machine upkeep involves several separate tasks. Breville identifies group-head cleaning, steam-wand care, descaling, and water-filter maintenance as distinct parts of machine maintenance. Its Barista Express instructions describe a model-specific descale procedure and explain that mineral deposits can accumulate in heating elements. Use the alerts and manual for your own model rather than applying a drip-machine cleaning cycle to an espresso machine.

Breville Coffee Specialist Ryan McLachlan has said that cleaning is a major difference between home users and professional cafés, and that improper cleaning can contribute to a home machine becoming faulty. This is a statement from the manufacturer, not an independent study. The practical point is straightforward: follow the maintenance instructions for the machine you own.
