To clean a chicken coop safely, move the birds out, remove manure and other debris before washing, then rinse, disinfect according to the product label, and let the coop dry completely before adding fresh bedding or returning the flock. This order matters: disinfectant cannot work properly through manure or caked-on dirt.

What to prepare before cleaning

Set aside a scraper or small shovel, a brush, water, detergent, clean bedding, and an EPA-registered disinfectant whose label covers the poultry disease concern you need to address. There is no single disinfectant established as suitable for every coop or pathogen. Check the label for dilution, contact time, ventilation, rinsing, surface compatibility, and animal re-entry instructions.

Wear clothes and footwear reserved for poultry care, or suitable disposable protection. Dedicated gear and handwashing help limit the movement of contamination between bird areas. For bird-flu exposure precautions, CDC recommends goggles, disposable gloves, waterproof or disinfectable boots or boot covers, an N95 respirator if available (or a well-fitting mask), fluid-resistant disposable coveralls, and a head cover. Those are CDC’s precautions for protecting backyard flock owners from bird flu, not a claim that every routine cleaning task requires respirator-level protection. See CDC’s backyard flock owner guidance.

How to clean a chicken coop in 7 steps

  1. Put on dedicated protective gear

Change into poultry-care clothes and footwear before entering the coop. Use appropriate disposable or reusable protection for the task and follow any additional precautions on the disinfectant label.

  3. Remove bedding and loose debris

Take out old litter, manure, feathers, and other organic material. A scraper or small shovel can help lift debris from floors, corners, and roost areas.

  6. Apply an appropriate disinfectant

Use an EPA-registered product with label directions and efficacy claims relevant to the poultry disease concern and setting. Follow the label exactly for dilution, application, contact time, ventilation, rinsing, and other precautions. Do not rely on an unverified homemade recipe or assume a product is effective against a pathogen unless its label says so. USDA APHIS explains its cleaning routine and disinfectant criteria.

  7. Let the coop dry, then reset and clean up

Leave the enclosure empty until every surface is completely dry. Open doors or windows, or use fans if appropriate, to help it dry. Add clean bedding only afterward. Clean and disinfect reusable boots; discard or wash protective gear as appropriate; then wash your hands thoroughly. USDA’s backyard poultry cleaning and disinfection checklist also stresses removing debris before disinfection and allowing surfaces to dry.

When coop cleaning is not enough

This routine is for ordinary backyard coop cleaning, not a suspected disease outbreak. If birds are sick or dying, contact your State veterinarian or USDA for animal-health guidance rather than treating cleaning as a substitute for veterinary advice. Keep birds out of the coop until it is fully dry, and follow all product-label precautions before they re-enter.
