Choose a portable dehumidifier by matching its rated moisture-removal capacity—pints per day—to both the area you want to treat and how damp that space is before operation. ENERGY STAR’s chart offers broad ranges for spaces under 2,000 square feet, not an exact prescription for an individual bedroom or room. Use it as a starting point, then compare current capacity ratings and efficiency; ENERGY STAR advises that it is better to oversize than undersize.
What size dehumidifier do I need for my room?
Start with two things: the floor area you want to treat and the space’s dampness before dehumidification. A room’s area alone cannot determine the right capacity. ENERGY STAR groups every space under 2,000 square feet into one broad size band, so its figures are useful for an initial estimate but cannot tell you the precise capacity for a particular bedroom, bathroom, or other room.

Use the table to find the published range that corresponds to both your area band and the signs of dampness. The figures are estimates for portable dehumidifiers in ENERGY STAR’s undated buying guidance, accessed in 2026. They are official guidance, not results of a study or a precise room-by-room formula.
| Condition before dehumidification | Relative humidity described in the guidance | Space under 2,000 sq. ft. | Space over 2,000 sq. ft. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slightly to moderately damp: intermittent damp feeling or musty odor | 50%–75% RH | 20–30 pints/day | 30+ pints/day |
| Very damp: consistently damp smell or visible damp spots on walls or floors | 75%–90% RH | 25–40 pints/day | 40+ pints/day |
| Wet: walls or floors sweat, seepage is present, or moisture load is high, such as from drying laundry | 90%–100% RH | 30–50 pints/day | 50+ pints/day |
Source: ENERGY STAR, “Dehumidifiers”. The chart identifies spaces below and above 2,000 square feet; it does not specify a separate band for exactly 2,000 square feet. It also does not subdivide the under-2,000-square-foot band into bedroom-sized areas. Don’t treat its capacity ranges as exact prescriptions for those cases.

How to apply the chart
- Define the area you want the unit to serve. Measure the room or other area you intend to treat. If you are considering treating connected spaces as one area, do not assume the chart provides an exact capacity for that arrangement; it gives broad area bands.
- Classify the dampness before running the unit. Use the signs in the table—intermittent or persistent dampness, visible damp spots, sweating surfaces, seepage, or a high moisture load—to identify the closest condition. If you have a relative-humidity reading, compare it with the chart’s ranges.
- Use the corresponding range as a starting estimate. A space under 2,000 square feet that is very damp, for example, falls in the chart’s 25–40-pint-per-day range. That range is broad; it does not mean that every room in that area band needs the same capacity.
- Compare products using their current published ratings. Check the rated pints per day and efficiency, and make sure you understand which rating generation you are comparing if you are looking at an older unit and a replacement.
ENERGY STAR’s rule of thumb is: “Remember, it’s better to oversize than undersize!” That is guidance to avoid choosing too little capacity, not a reason to infer an exact rating beyond the chart.
How damp is the room?
The chart’s three condition descriptions help distinguish occasional dampness from a heavier moisture problem. An intermittent damp feeling or musty odor corresponds to the slightly-to-moderately damp category. A consistently damp smell or visible damp spots on a wall or floor moves the space into the very damp category. Sweating walls or floors, seepage, or a high moisture load such as laundry drying are signs in the wet category.
These descriptions are not interchangeable. For example, a musty odor by itself appears in the first category when it is intermittent; the guidance describes a consistently damp smell and visible damp spots in the next category. The chart also pairs those descriptions with relative-humidity ranges: 50%–75%, 75%–90%, and 90%–100%, respectively. If you already know the space’s relative humidity, that reading can help you interpret the category, but the chart still offers only broad capacity ranges.
Consider the conditions in the space before the dehumidifier has been working. The chart is intended to help estimate the moisture-removal capacity for the initial dampness, not to tell you that a room currently held at a lower humidity belongs in a different size category. It also does not provide separate adjustments for room height, layout, or a particular type of room, so avoid turning it into a formula it does not contain.
What does “pints per day” mean?
Pints per day describes how much water a dehumidifier removes over 24 hours under the applicable test conditions. It measures moisture-removal capacity; it does not describe the size of the unit’s water bucket. A model’s bucket may need emptying more or less often than another’s even if their capacity ratings are similar, depending on its container and how it is operated.
The U.S. Department of Energy defines dehumidifier performance ratings and test methods. Because capacity is measured under test conditions, the figure is a standard for comparing rated removal ability—not a promise that the unit will collect that amount of water every day in your room. The conditions in the space and the unit’s operating circumstances matter.
When replacing an existing unit, the amount of water it collects in a day can offer a practical clue about the moisture load it has been handling. Treat that as context rather than as a direct conversion to a new model’s rated pints per day: compare replacement products using their own current ratings and test basis.

Capacity and water storage describe different parts of the product. The pints-per-day figure refers to removal over a 24-hour period under test conditions; the bucket is the container that holds water collected during operation. A larger bucket does not, by itself, indicate that a unit can remove more moisture per day, and a capacity rating does not tell you how much water the container holds.
That distinction matters when planning day-to-day use. ENERGY STAR identifies water-removal options as a buying consideration. A removable bucket commonly includes a full indicator and automatic shutoff, but the container still has to be emptied when full. If you prefer a drainage arrangement, make sure the hose or other setup is routed without creating a tripping hazard.

Why can a newer unit have a lower capacity rating?
The DOE’s test procedure changed to use cooler conditions intended to be more comparable to a basement setting. ENERGY STAR explains that capacity ratings on newer units can therefore be lower than older ratings even when the units have comparable performance. The size of the change varies by model, so a single general conversion should not be treated as exact.
When comparing a replacement with an older dehumidifier, first check whether the capacity figures use the same rating generation. A lower number on a newer label does not, by itself, establish that the newer unit removes less moisture in comparable use. Use current published ratings to compare current models, and consult the manufacturer’s specifications if the rating basis for a particular product is unclear.
This is especially relevant if you remember the capacity rating of an older unit or are comparing a used product listing with new models. The older and newer numbers may come from different test conditions. Rather than applying a universal adjustment, compare models reported on the same current basis when possible, and use the current rating and efficiency information for present-day product comparisons.
See ENERGY STAR’s explanation of dehumidifier testing and capacity for the rating definitions and test-procedure context.
How should you compare efficiency as well as capacity?
After identifying a suitable capacity range, compare the unit’s Integrated Energy Factor (IEF). IEF is expressed in liters of water removed per kilowatt-hour of energy used. ENERGY STAR says the measure accounts for energy used in dehumidification and relevant non-dehumidification modes, making it an efficiency measure to consider alongside pints per day.
Capacity and efficiency answer different buying questions. Capacity indicates rated moisture removal over 24 hours; IEF indicates water removed per unit of energy under the relevant rating method. A capacity range that looks appropriate is only one part of the comparison, so check both values rather than selecting by the pints-per-day number alone.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →ENERGY STAR’s efficiency criteria vary by portable-unit capacity band: at or below 25 pints per day, from 25.01 through 50 pints per day, and at or above 50 pints per day. The qualifying IEF thresholds are version-dependent, so it is better to check current certification than to rely on a threshold remembered from an older specification.
For a current model comparison, use the ENERGY STAR certified dehumidifier listing, which includes product capacity and IEF fields. The ENERGY STAR efficiency-criteria page explains its current criteria. Certification and IEF are useful comparison information; neither establishes that a particular model is the right capacity for your room.
When making a shortlist, compare like with like: note each candidate’s reported capacity, confirm that the rating basis is current, and then compare IEF. ENERGY STAR certification can help identify products meeting the program’s current criteria, but the chart’s capacity estimates remain a separate step in deciding what range is appropriate for the space. The criteria can change, so consult current certification data instead of treating a past threshold as permanent.

What humidity should you aim for?
ENERGY STAR says the optimum relative humidity for a building is generally 30%–50%. It recommends 30%–40% during the heating season in colder climates to help prevent window condensation. Its guidance also notes that relative humidity above 50% can be conducive to mold growth; that is a risk condition, not a guarantee that mold will develop.

A humidistat lets the dehumidifier respond to a humidity setting rather than requiring continuous manual operation. ENERGY STAR-certified units include a built-in humidistat. Choose a sensible target for the conditions in your space, then use the humidistat to control operation; avoid treating the chart’s pre-treatment dampness categories as a recommended operating target.
The sizing chart and humidity target serve related but different purposes. The chart describes how damp the space is before treatment and helps estimate a capacity range. The 30%–50% guidance describes a general optimum relative-humidity range for a building, with the colder-climate heating-season recommendation of 30%–40% tied to helping prevent window condensation. The 50% figure is also useful context because ENERGY STAR notes that higher relative humidity can be conducive to mold growth.
What else matters when choosing a unit?
Water removal and drainage
Consider how you will handle collected water. A removable bucket commonly has a full indicator and automatic shutoff, but those features do not eliminate the need to empty it or ensure uninterrupted operation. If you use a drainage arrangement, place and route it so it does not create a tripping hazard. ENERGY STAR identifies water-removal options as a useful buying consideration.
Think about whether emptying a bucket is workable for the location and use you have in mind. The full indicator and automatic shutoff are practical features of a removable-bucket arrangement, while drainage is another option to consider. The key is to understand how water will leave the unit and to keep any drainage route from becoming a hazard; the capacity rating itself does not specify which water-removal arrangement a product has.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHeat around the unit
A dehumidifier can make the air immediately around it warmer while it removes moisture. That local effect is worth considering when choosing where to operate the unit; it does not change what the pints-per-day rating means.
Leaks and seepage
Seepage and persistently wet surfaces fall into the chart’s wet, high-moisture-load category. A dehumidifier can remove moisture from air, but sizing a unit does not resolve the source of water intrusion. If water is entering through a leak or seepage, the source must be addressed rather than relying on dehumidification alone.
This distinction prevents a sizing decision from being mistaken for a repair. The chart includes seepage as a sign of a wet condition, but it does not claim that a higher-capacity appliance will stop the water entering the room. Use the capacity guidance to think about moisture removal from the air, and treat a leak or seepage source as a separate problem.
How to avoid common sizing mistakes
- Do not choose by bucket volume. Bucket size is not the rated moisture-removal capacity; compare pints removed per day.
- Do not size by area alone. Use the chart’s dampness descriptions as well as the area band.
- Do not read a broad range as an exact room prescription. The chart puts all spaces under 2,000 square feet together and does not give a bedroom-specific formula.
- Do not compare old and new capacity figures as though their test conditions must match. Check the rating basis because the DOE procedure changed.
- Do not ignore energy efficiency once capacity is appropriate. Compare IEF using current product information and criteria.
- Do not expect a dehumidifier to fix seepage. Treat water intrusion as a separate source problem.
Another avoidable mistake is treating the dampness percentages as exact room-size inputs. The humidity descriptions and area bands work together as broad guidance, but the chart does not provide a mathematical formula that converts a specific floor area and a relative-humidity reading into one precise capacity. Similarly, the overlap in the published ranges is intentional guidance, not a reason to assume every room at a given humidity requires an identical unit.

Do not assume a unit’s bucket needs emptying once per day simply because its capacity is stated per day. The rating is about moisture removal under test conditions, whereas the bucket is a container; the buying guidance does not make them equivalent. Plan for the product’s water-removal method and check the unit’s own information for its particular features.

How many pints per day do I need?
For a space under 2,000 square feet, ENERGY STAR’s broad estimates are 20–30 pints per day if it is slightly to moderately damp, 25–40 if it is very damp, and 30–50 if it is wet. For spaces over 2,000 square feet, the chart gives 30+, 40+, and 50+ pints per day for those same categories. These are starting ranges, not exact prescriptions for an individual room.
Can I use this chart to size a bedroom?
Not precisely. ENERGY STAR groups all areas under 2,000 square feet together, without a separate bedroom-sized category or room-by-room formula. You can use the dampness signs and broad range as an initial guide, then compare products’ current published capacity and IEF ratings.
Is a bigger dehumidifier always better?
ENERGY STAR says it is better to oversize than undersize. That advice cautions against choosing too little capacity; it does not provide an exact ideal rating for every room or mean that the chart’s broad ranges can be narrowed to a precise number.
Does a 30-pint-per-day rating mean the bucket holds 30 pints?
No. Pints per day measures moisture removal over 24 hours under test conditions. Bucket volume is the amount the container can hold. A removable bucket commonly has a full indicator and automatic shutoff, but its size is not the product’s capacity rating.
Why does my older unit have a higher pints-per-day number?
The DOE changed the test procedure to use cooler conditions. ENERGY STAR notes that newer ratings can be lower than older ones for units with comparable performance, and that the change varies by model. Do not use one universal conversion; check the rating basis and compare current models using current ratings.
What humidity level should I set?
