Choose an excavator by the work it must perform, not by tonnage alone. Define the required digging depth, reach, material and volume, lift radius, dump height, access width, attachments, terrain and transport limits. Then compare those requirements with the exact machine’s published digging geometry, lift chart, bucket and hydraulic specifications.
A larger excavator generally adds breakout force, reach and lifting capacity, but it also needs more room, costs more to move and can damage sensitive surfaces. A compact machine may fit through a gate yet lack the depth, reach or stability your production schedule requires. The right choice is the smallest machine that safely meets every critical requirement without excessive repositioning or cycle time.

Start with a job specification, not a machine class
Write down the work before looking at models. A useful specification describes what must be dug, moved or lifted and the conditions under which the excavator will operate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Excavation: trench or pit length, width, maximum depth and required side slopes.
- Material: topsoil, clay, gravel, rock, demolition debris or another material, including whether it is wet, compacted or abrasive.
- Production: approximate volume to remove, where spoil will be placed and the available truck or stockpile height.
- Handling: objects to lift, their weight, pick points and the farthest working radius.
- Access: narrowest gate, path or road, overhead clearance, nearby walls, utility lines and traffic.
- Surface and terrain: pavement, landscaped ground, slopes, mud, uneven terrain and any ground-pressure restrictions.
- Tools: buckets, breaker, auger, compactor or other attachments and their hydraulic requirements.
- Logistics: operating weight, transport dimensions, trailer capacity, route restrictions and local permit or driver rules.
Caterpillar’s January 15, 2025 sizing guidance captures the starting question well: “What is the maximum digging depth and reach typically required?” Ask it before comparing engine power or advertised tonnage.

Match the machine’s digging geometry
Two excavators with similar operating weights can have different boom, stick and bucket combinations. Check the model’s configuration-specific specifications rather than relying on a class label.
Depth
Compare maximum digging depth with the deepest point of the trench or excavation, allowing for the required working angle and any need to clean the bottom. If the published depth is only barely greater than your target, the operator may have to reposition frequently or work at an inefficient angle. A longer stick can increase depth in one configuration while changing breakout force and lift performance.
Reach
Ground-level reach determines how far the excavator can work from its position. Check reach at the digging depth you actually need, not only the headline maximum. Extra reach can reduce track movement, but extending the arm farther from the machine also changes stability and lift capacity.
Recommended Free Tools
Dump height
Measure the sideboard or hopper height of the truck, container or stockpile. The machine must clear that height with the intended bucket and load. A model with sufficient depth but inadequate dump height will require a different loading arrangement or additional repositioning.
Bucket capacity and breakout force
Bucket capacity should match material density and the volume you need to move. Breakout force matters when cutting compacted soil, clay or other resistant material. Use the manufacturer’s bucket range and force ratings for the selected boom, stick and counterweight; a larger bucket is not automatically productive if the machine cannot fill or swing it safely.

Understand excavator size classes
Size classes are useful for narrowing a search, but manufacturers group machines differently. The following ranges are Caterpillar’s approximate U.S. categories, published in 2025, not an industry-wide standard.
| Approximate class | Published weight range | Typical use described by Caterpillar |
|---|---|---|
| Compact/mini | Up to 13,000 lb (6 metric tons) | Confined work and landscaping |
| Midi | Approximately 15,400–22,000 lb (7–10 metric tons) | Intermediate work where more capability is needed than a compact machine provides |
| Standard | Approximately 22,000–99,200 lb (10–45 metric tons) | Common commercial construction with greater power and tool-hydraulic capability |
| Large | More than 99,200 lb (45 metric tons) | Heavy construction, demolition and truck loading |
Kubota’s U.S. compact-line guide uses a different grouping: 1–2 tons for very tight access, 3–5 tons as a balance for residential and smaller-footprint work, and 6–8 tons where more reach and lift are required. Bobcat’s current buyer guide associates 5–6 metric-ton compact machines with mid-size construction, roadwork and larger landscaping, and 7–10 metric-ton compact machines with more demanding commercial, utility and earthmoving work.
These overlapping ranges show why “five-ton excavator” is only a starting point. Confirm the exact model’s depth, reach, lift chart, width, tail swing, hydraulic flow, bucket range and transport weight.
Use lift capacity and working radius correctly
Rated lift capacity is not a single number that applies everywhere around the machine. It varies with boom and stick, bucket or lifting attachment, counterweight, track position, lift height and the distance from the swing center. Obtain the manufacturer’s lift chart for the exact configuration and compare it with the load at its farthest radius.
- Identify the heaviest load, including the bucket, hook, slings or other lifting gear.
- Measure the horizontal radius from the swing center to the load’s pick point.
- Check the chart for the required direction, such as over the side or over the front.
- Allow for ground conditions, slope and the need to keep the machine level.
- Stay within the chart and the attachment’s rated capacity; do not infer lifting ability from operating weight alone.
Conventional-tail machines generally provide a larger counterweight envelope and are described by Bobcat and Kubota as favoring stability and lifting capacity. Reduced- or zero-tail-swing machines trade some of that advantage for clearance. The lift chart, not the swing label, determines what a particular model can safely lift.

Check access, tail swing and site clearance
Measure the complete route
Record the narrowest gate, doorway, bridge, ramp and turning point. Use the machine’s actual operating width, including tracks or wheels, and account for mirrors, handrails, bucket position and any attachment that remains installed. Check overall height against tree limbs, roof edges and overhead utilities. A machine that fits the gate may still be unable to turn or swing safely inside the work area.
Choose the appropriate swing configuration
- Zero tail swing: the rear counterweight stays within the track width as the upper structure rotates, making close-wall work easier.
- Minimal or reduced tail swing: a small overhang offers more clearance than a conventional design while retaining some counterweight outside the tracks.
- Conventional tail swing: the counterweight extends farther beyond the tracks, commonly supporting greater stability and lifting performance but requiring more clearance.
Mark the complete swing envelope on the site plan. Include the boom, counterweight and attachment, not just the track width. Keep people, vehicles, walls and utilities outside that envelope unless the work plan and guarding arrangements specifically allow otherwise.
Match tracks or wheels to the ground
John Deere’s equipment guidance recommends considering both the tasks and the terrain. Wheeled excavators are suited to harder surfaces and can travel more readily on roads where permitted. Tracked machines generally handle uneven or muddy ground better and spread weight over a larger contact area, but they can mark finished surfaces and may require additional transport planning.
Confirm ground pressure, undercarriage width and surface protection requirements for the actual site. On lawns, pavers or recently completed pavement, plan mats or another approved protection method if the owner or site conditions require it. On slopes or soft ground, verify the manufacturer’s operating limits and use a site-specific stability assessment rather than assuming that a heavier machine is safer.
Select hydraulics and attachments together
Attachments can change the correct excavator size. A breaker, auger, compactor or hydraulic thumb may need a particular auxiliary flow and pressure, separate case drain, electrical control or coupler. Bobcat emphasizes checking auxiliary hydraulic flow and pressure and attachment compatibility; Kubota lists breakers and augers among common compact-excavator tasks.

Attachment checklist
- List every tool planned for the project and its required flow, pressure, weight and connection type.
- Confirm that the excavator can provide those hydraulic values continuously, not merely at a peak setting.
- Verify the coupler, pin dimensions, hydraulic hoses, electrical controls and any case-drain requirement.
- Check the attachment’s rated operating weight and working envelope against the machine’s lift chart.
- Confirm that the selected bucket capacity suits the material and that the boom and stick are approved for it.
If you are buying a mini excavator bucket, verify the exact machine model, coupler, pin or quick-attach system, weight class and hydraulic configuration where relevant. A bucket marketed as “mini excavator” is not universal; fitment must be confirmed with the manufacturer or supplier.
Account for transport before committing
Use loaded transport weight, not the bare machine specification. Include the cab or canopy, counterweight, bucket, quick coupler, auxiliary equipment, fuel and any attachment that will travel with the excavator.
- Record the machine’s transport length, width, height and operating weight in the intended configuration.
- Check the truck and trailer’s legal payload, axle ratings, deck length, tie-down points and braking requirements.
- Review the planned route for bridge limits, roadway restrictions, low clearances, narrow streets and seasonal limitations.
- Verify permit, escort, registration and driver requirements with the authority in the jurisdiction where the move occurs.
- Confirm loading angles, ramp capacity and tie-down procedures in the machine and trailer manuals.
Caterpillar notes that heavier standard excavators require larger trailers and asks buyers to consider suitable trailers, qualified drivers and restricted roadways. Those are planning prompts, not universal legal conclusions; local rules control.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Decide whether to rent or buy
Compare ownership with rental using the project schedule and expected utilization. A machine used only for occasional excavation may tie up capital and incur maintenance costs while idle; a heavily utilized fleet may justify ownership and a known attachment package.
| Cost or factor | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Utilization | How many productive hours or days will this exact size work each month and year? |
| Rental | What are the current local daily, weekly or monthly rates, delivery charges, damage waivers and fuel terms? |
| Finance | What deposit, interest, payment schedule and total borrowing cost apply? |
| Operating cost | What fuel consumption, wear parts, service intervals and operator costs should be budgeted? |
| Resale | What resale value is realistic for the age, hours, condition and local market? |
| Support | How quickly are parts, technicians and replacement attachments available? |
Caterpillar and Kubota both identify utilization, fuel, maintenance, resale and financing as relevant factors. Neither provides a universal rental-versus-purchase price result. Use current quotes for your area and the actual project dates. Renting can also let a contractor validate a size on a short or unusual job, but it is not automatically cheaper.

Use a repeatable sizing process
The following sequence turns a job description into a defensible machine specification.
- Define the work envelope. Write the maximum depth, working reach, dump height, trench width, material type and approximate volume.
- Define lifting requirements. Record the heaviest load, radius, lift height and whether the lift is over the front or side.
- Measure the site. Record access width, height, swing clearance, turning space, terrain, surface sensitivity and overhead hazards.
- Choose a preliminary class. Use manufacturer class ranges only to narrow the list; keep at least one size above and below if access allows.
- Build the configuration. Select boom, stick, counterweight, tracks or wheels, cab, coupler, bucket and attachments.
- Verify published performance. Check digging depth, reach, dump height, bucket capacity, breakout force, auxiliary hydraulics and the exact lift chart.
- Verify logistics. Check loaded transport dimensions and weight, trailer capacity, route limits and local legal requirements.
- Price the decision. Compare rental and ownership using utilization, finance, fuel, maintenance, resale and support assumptions.
- Document the choice. Keep the specification sheet, lift chart, attachment approvals, delivery plan and operator instructions with the job records.
Common sizing mistakes and their fixes
Choosing by tonnage alone
Symptom: the machine fits a nominal class but cannot reach the trench bottom or lift the load at radius. Fix: compare model-specific geometry and lift data first, then use tonnage as a logistics and stability reference.
Checking only maximum depth
Symptom: the excavator reaches the bottom but cannot dump high enough or work far enough from the edge. Fix: verify depth, reach and dump height in the same boom-and-stick configuration.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Ignoring the tail-swing envelope
Symptom: the tracks fit between walls but the counterweight strikes an obstacle during rotation. Fix: mark the full swing envelope and select reduced or zero swing only when its lift chart meets the job.
Overlooking attachment hydraulics
Symptom: a breaker or auger runs slowly, overheats or cannot connect. Fix: match required flow, pressure, case drain, coupler and controls before delivery.
Underestimating transport weight
Symptom: the trailer payload or route clearance is exceeded after the bucket and coupler are installed. Fix: plan from the loaded configuration and verify the route and jurisdictional rules.
Using the wrong bucket for the material
Symptom: cycles are slow, the bucket will not fill or the machine becomes unstable. Fix: select capacity and teeth for material density and resistance, then confirm manufacturer fitment and lift limits.
Questions to put on the rental or dealer quotation
- What are the maximum digging depth, ground-level reach and dump height for the quoted boom and stick?
- What is the rated lift capacity at my required radius and direction of lift?
- What is the operating and transport weight with the selected bucket, coupler and attachments?
- What are the machine width, overall height and tail-swing radius?
- What auxiliary hydraulic flow, pressure and electrical or case-drain provisions are included?
- Which buckets and tools are approved, and what are their capacities and weights?
- What delivery equipment, route restrictions, insurance terms and damage responsibilities apply?
- Which service intervals, fuel requirements and operator controls must be followed?
Final decision rule
Select the smallest excavator whose exact configuration satisfies the deepest dig, farthest reach, highest dump, heaviest lift and attachment requirements while fitting the site and transport plan. If one requirement fails—especially lift capacity, access, hydraulics or legal transport—the machine is not the right size, regardless of its advertised tonnage. Because manufacturer classes and specifications vary by model, year and market, obtain current local data and keep the configuration-specific charts with the job plan.
