The right DeWalt battery is determined first by your tool’s exact model and platform, not by the DeWalt name alone. Read the tool manual or its compatibility chart, confirm the battery family (12V MAX, 20V MAX, FLEXVOLT or an older 18V tool), then choose the lowest capacity that gives the runtime you need without adding unnecessary bulk. Check the charger separately: a battery that fits the tool may still require a different charger.
For a cross-platform option, DeWalt’s FLEXVOLT packs are documented for compatible 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools. They switch operating voltage according to the tool. Every other pairing should be verified by model number before purchase.

Start with the exact tool model
Look for the model code on the tool housing, nameplate, manual or original packaging. A label such as “20V MAX” narrows the search, but it does not prove that every 20V MAX battery, adapter or charger is approved for that particular tool. Tool electronics, physical rails and required current can differ within one voltage family.

DeWalt’s FLEXVOLT battery system information describes system-level compatibility, but it does not replace checking an individual tool model.
Understand DeWalt’s battery platforms
12V MAX
12V MAX batteries belong to DeWalt’s compact 12V tool platform. They are not interchangeable with 20V MAX packs simply because both are lithium-ion products. Use a 12V MAX battery only in a tool and charger identified for that platform.
20V MAX
20V MAX is DeWalt’s broad cordless-tool platform. A tool marked 20V MAX still needs a battery listed as compatible with its exact model. Standard 20V MAX packs are intended for 20V MAX tools; they are not a substitute for a battery specified for a 60V MAX tool.

FLEXVOLT is the documented DeWalt system that spans compatible 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools. DeWalt says a FLEXVOLT pack changes operating voltage automatically: in a compatible 20V MAX tool it operates as 20V MAX, and in a compatible 60V MAX tool it operates as 60V MAX. The DCB612 product page provides that automatic-switching description.
FLEXVOLT does not mean that every DeWalt tool accepts every FLEXVOLT pack. The tool’s model-specific documentation remains the authority, especially for older tools, specialty equipment and tools with unusual battery compartments.
Older 18V tools and the DCA1820 adapter
DeWalt lists the DCA1820 adapter for 20V batteries on most DeWalt 18V tools. “Most” is an important limitation. Check the adapter compatibility list and the older tool’s manual before ordering; do not assume that every 18V model is covered.

What FLEXVOLT voltage labels mean
DeWalt’s DCB612 documentation lists 20V, 60V and 120V MAX figures alongside nominal values of 18V, 54V and 108V. DeWalt explains that MAX voltage is the maximum initial voltage measured without workload; the nominal figure is lower during normal operation. The MAX number is therefore a labeling convention, not a promise that the pack continuously delivers that voltage under load.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a practical buying decision, match the platform named in the tool documentation. Do not reject a compatible pack because its nominal voltage differs from the marketing label, and do not infer compatibility from matching numbers alone.
Choose capacity for the work you actually do
Amp-hours (Ah) describe the amount of electrical charge a battery stores. They are useful for comparing packs within a compatible platform, but Ah is not a universal runtime calculator. Runtime changes with the tool’s motor, the material, cutting or fastening load, operating speed, battery condition and how continuously the trigger is held.
Smaller packs
A lower-Ah compatible pack is often the sensible choice for light-duty tools, short jobs and overhead work where reduced bulk matters. It can also suit a crew that keeps several charged packs available and returns to a charger frequently. The correct smaller pack is one that the tool manual approves; “smallest possible” is not a reason to use an unapproved battery.
Larger packs
Higher-Ah packs make more sense when a tool runs for long periods, performs demanding cuts or drilling, or is used far from a charger. The trade-off is a larger, heavier pack and a higher replacement cost when the pack eventually needs to be replaced. A larger label does not guarantee a proportional runtime increase on every tool.
FLEXVOLT capacity choices
DeWalt’s FLEXVOLT system pages list 6Ah, 9Ah, 12Ah and 15Ah capacities. Those capacities are product choices, not universal runtime ratings. Select among them only after confirming that your tool accepts the specific FLEXVOLT family and that the pack’s physical size is practical for the tool.

| FLEXVOLT capacity listed by DeWalt | When the capacity may make sense | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 6Ah | Portable work where you want a balance between stored charge and pack bulk | Capacity listed on DeWalt’s FLEXVOLT system information; actual runtime depends on tool and workload |
| 9Ah | Longer sessions when a larger pack is acceptable | Capacity listed on DeWalt’s FLEXVOLT system information; no universal runtime figure established |
| 12Ah | Sustained or demanding work where minimizing battery changes matters | Capacity listed on DeWalt’s FLEXVOLT system information; the DCB612 page identifies a 12Ah model |
| 15Ah | Maximum listed FLEXVOLT capacity for jobs that justify additional size | Capacity listed on DeWalt’s FLEXVOLT system information; tool-specific approval and handling still apply |
DeWalt states that its DCB612 FLEXVOLT battery provides “up to 6x the runtime” in 20V MAX tools compared with the DCB201 1.5Ah pack. That is a manufacturer comparison with a named baseline, not an independent test or a guarantee for every tool. Treat it as directional information and verify the battery recommendation for your model.
Use a compatibility-first comparison
When several packs are approved for your tool, compare them in this order:
- Platform and model approval: eliminate every pack that the tool manual or compatibility chart does not name.
- Capacity: choose the Ah level that covers your typical work period while keeping handling reasonable.
- Physical practicality: check the pack’s size and balance in the tool. DeWalt’s cited product pages do not establish a universal weight comparison for all capacities, so do not infer one from the Ah number.
- Charger coverage: confirm that your existing charger accepts the chosen battery family.
- Availability and warranty: verify the current terms and stock for the exact model before purchase; these can change by market and date.
This method prevents a common mistake: selecting a large, apparently powerful pack first and discovering later that it does not fit the tool, is not approved for the tool, or cannot be charged with the equipment already on site.

Check the charger as a separate compatibility decision
Battery-to-tool fit and charger compatibility are different checks. DeWalt’s charger catalog includes products for 12V MAX, 20V MAX and FLEXVOLT batteries, but individual charger models cover different combinations.
For example, DeWalt lists the DCB1404 multiport charger for DeWalt 12V MAX, 20V MAX and FLEXVOLT 20V/60V MAX batteries. That specification applies to the DCB1404; it does not mean every DeWalt charger supports all three platforms. Check the exact charger model in the charger catalog and its manual.
A practical charger check
- Read the model number on the charger label.
- Open DeWalt’s product page or manual for that charger.
- Confirm the listed battery families: 12V MAX, 20V MAX, FLEXVOLT 20V/60V MAX or another explicitly named combination.
- Compare that list with the battery model you intend to buy.
- If the family is not listed, use a charger that DeWalt documents for the pack instead of testing the fit.
Follow this decision process before buying
Step 1: Record the tool model and platform
Write down the complete model code, including suffixes. Photograph the tool label if several similar tools are on a job site. Note whether the documentation identifies the tool as 12V MAX, 20V MAX, 60V MAX or an older 18V model.

Step 2: Pull the compatibility information
Use the tool manual and DeWalt’s model-specific product information. For a FLEXVOLT candidate, consult the FLEXVOLT system page and the individual battery page, then confirm the tool model itself is included.
Step 3: Decide how much runtime you need
Estimate the longest uninterrupted work period rather than the entire day. A framing or cutting tool used continuously may justify a higher-Ah pack; a drill used for occasional holes may be easier to handle with a smaller approved pack and a spare. This is a workflow decision, not a promise that one Ah value lasts a fixed number of hours.
Step 4: Check balance and access
Consider overhead fastening, ladder work, tight cabinets and other positions where a bulky pack can make control harder. For ground-based saws or high-load tools, the extra stored charge may be worth the additional size. If DeWalt has not published a weight for the two packs you are comparing, inspect the documented dimensions or handle the pack at a dealer rather than guessing.
Step 5: Confirm the charger
Match the battery model to the charger’s explicit platform list. If your current charger is not listed, include a compatible charger in the purchase plan instead of relying on physical similarity.
Step 6: Verify the final model numbers
Before checkout, compare the battery, tool and charger model numbers character by character. Product names such as “20V” or “FLEXVOLT” are not enough to establish approval.
Common compatibility situations
“Will a 20V battery work in my DeWalt tool?”
It will work only when the tool is a compatible 20V MAX model and the battery is approved for that model. A 20V label by itself does not establish interchangeability. If the tool is an older 18V model, determine whether the DCA1820 adapter is listed for that specific tool and follow the tool manual.

“Can one battery cover my 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools?”
A FLEXVOLT pack is DeWalt’s documented cross-platform option for compatible 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools. It switches voltage according to the tool, but each tool still needs model-level confirmation. A standard 20V MAX pack is not automatically a 60V MAX solution.
“My battery fits the rails. Is it safe to use?”
Physical fit is not a safety or compatibility test. The tool may require electronic communication, a particular voltage range or a pack approved for its current demand. Use the manual and compatibility chart, not a trial insertion.
Safety: never force or modify a pack
The DeWalt DCS7485B instruction manual states: “NEVER force the battery pack into the charger. DO NOT modify the battery pack in any way to fit into a non-compatible charger as battery pack may rupture causing serious personal injury.” Read the full DCS7485B instruction manual and apply the same principle to other DeWalt tools: stop when the documented fit is wrong.

- Remove the pack and consult DeWalt documentation if charging behavior or fit is abnormal.
How to avoid the most expensive buying mistakes
Mistake: buying by Ah alone
A 12Ah pack is not automatically the best choice. First establish tool compatibility, then decide whether the additional stored charge justifies the extra size for your work pattern.
Mistake: treating MAX voltage as continuous voltage
MAX figures are maximum initial voltages measured without workload. Use the platform designation and nominal information in the documentation rather than comparing MAX numbers as if they were operating voltages under load.
Mistake: assuming every FLEXVOLT pack fits every DeWalt tool
FLEXVOLT’s cross-platform design is broad but not universal. Verify the exact tool model, especially when the tool is older or its battery compartment is unusually compact.
Mistake: forgetting the charger
A new battery can leave a crew unable to work if the existing charger does not list that platform. Check the charger before ordering the pack.
Mistake: treating a manufacturer claim as a guaranteed result
The DCB612 “up to 6x” statement uses DeWalt’s DCB201 1.5Ah pack as its comparison baseline in 20V MAX tools. Actual results vary by tool and workload, and the cited product information is not an independently published runtime study.
A job-site checklist
- Tool model recorded in full
- Tool platform confirmed from the manual or compatibility chart
- Battery model explicitly listed as compatible
- Capacity selected for the expected work period and handling needs
- Charger model checked against the battery’s platform
- Adapter requirement verified for any older 18V tool
- MAX and nominal voltage labels understood
- No forced fit, housing modification or undocumented adapter planned
- Current availability, warranty and regional listing verified before purchase
Bottom line for contractors and serious DIY users
Choose the battery in a strict sequence: exact tool model, approved platform, suitable capacity, then charger. FLEXVOLT is the documented way to share a pack between compatible 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools; it is not a blanket license for every DeWalt product. Ah helps you balance runtime against bulk, but it cannot predict a fixed number of hours across different tools. When documentation does not confirm a pairing, do not force the battery or charger—select a model that DeWalt explicitly lists.
