Assess the frame and its finish, the exposed weave or tabletop, and the cushion fabric as separate systems. Then match the manufacturer’s care instructions to your patio’s sun, rain, salt, wind, and winter exposure. A cover or indoor storage can extend protection during severe weather, but it does not turn an indoor-grade product into outdoor furniture.
Look for a specific construction description—such as polyethylene weave on a powder-coated aluminum frame—plus stated UV or weather performance and practical cleaning instructions. Treat every durability claim as product-specific: the available evidence consists of manufacturer guidance rather than independent, head-to-head testing.

Start with the complete furniture assembly
Outdoor durability is a chain. A frame can tolerate rain while its finish chalks in strong sun; a synthetic weave can be weather-rated while the cushions absorb moisture; a cushion fabric can resist fading while seams, zippers, or foam remain vulnerable. Judge each component before you judge the set.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Frame: Identify the base metal or other structural material and how it is protected. Ask whether joints are welded, mechanically fastened, or both.
- Finish: Find the stated coating or finish and the cleaning products it permits. A finish is part of the weather barrier, not merely a color choice.
- Exposed surface: Determine whether the visible material is synthetic polyethylene wicker, natural wicker, resin, teak, wrought iron, aluminum, Textiline sling, or another construction. “Wicker” describes a weave style; it does not identify the fiber.
- Cushions and fabric: Check the exact textile, UV or fade language, moisture behavior, stain resistance, and cleaning method. Do not infer cushion performance from the frame rating.
- Care and storage: Read the maker’s instructions before purchase. The need to cover, store, rinse, or clean a piece is part of its real ownership requirement.
No source establishes one universally best material. The right choice is the assembly whose documented limits and maintenance fit your exposure and the amount of care you will actually provide.

Evaluate the frame and finish first
Powder-coated aluminum
Several manufacturer descriptions pair aluminum with a protective powder coat. KETTLER specifies a polyethylene weave on powder-coated aluminum frames, while Gloster describes a welded, powder-coated aluminum foundation beneath its man-made polyethylene fiber. Those descriptions tell you how those particular products are built; they are not a blanket guarantee for every aluminum chair or table.
Ask for the exact frame alloy if it matters to your project, but place equal emphasis on the finish and joints. A product page that says only “aluminum frame” leaves important questions unanswered: Is the coating powder applied? Are welds sealed and finished? What cleaners are allowed? Is touch-up guidance supplied? Request the care sheet and warranty for the model, not a generic statement about the company’s entire range.
Other frame categories
KETTLER lists resin, wrought iron, aluminum, wicker, teak, and Textiline sling among its material categories. That list is useful for identifying what you are comparing, but it does not rank them or establish equal weather performance. For wrought iron, ask specifically about the protective finish and rust-care procedure. For resin, ask about UV treatment and temperature limits. For wood, ask about the required finish, recoating interval, and whether the manufacturer expects seasonal storage. For sling furniture, identify both the frame coating and the textile specification.

Fasteners, feet, hinges, and adjustable mechanisms deserve their own check. A weather-resistant frame can still develop problems where dissimilar materials meet or where water remains trapped. Before buying, look for accessible drainage, replaceable feet, and instructions for rinsing salt or dirt from joints. If the product will sit near a pool, ocean, or de-icing salts, ask whether the warranty addresses corrosion in that environment.
Understand what “wicker” actually means
Wicker is a weaving method, not a material grade. Synthetic polyethylene wicker and natural wicker should never be treated as interchangeable simply because both are woven. Read the fiber name, the frame construction, and the maker’s exposure statement together.
| Construction or material | What the available manufacturer information says | What you still need to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Synthetic polyethylene wicker on powder-coated aluminum | KETTLER describes this construction as weatherproof and suitable to remain outside year-round, with the exception of cushions. Its care guidance calls for a soft brush or vacuum, a damp cloth, medium-setting hose rinsing, and mild soap; it warns against bleach, abrasive cleaners, and high-power washing. | Confirm that the exact model uses the stated polyethylene and frame, whether cushions are excluded from the year-round claim, and any regional warranty or temperature limits. |
| Man-made polyethylene fiber on welded, powder-coated aluminum | Gloster says its woven pieces can remain outdoors year-round within a stated range of -20°C to +55°C (-4°F to 131°F). | Treat the temperature range as Gloster’s product claim. Verify the model, local climate, finish care, and what must be stored or covered. |
| High-density polyethylene all-weather wicker over aluminum | Bernhardt describes this construction and recommends mild soap and water, a soft brush or cloth, weekly rinsing in salty environments, and indoor storage or a cover during inclement weather. | Confirm the recommended frequency for your location, the fit of any cover, and whether cushions or inserts have separate instructions. |
| Natural wicker | The cited material pages do not establish a universal UV, rain, or temperature rating for natural wicker. | Obtain the exact fiber, finish, covered-versus-exposed use guidance, storage requirements, and warranty before treating it as a full-time outdoor product. |
KETTLER reports 2,000 UV-resistant light hours for its wicker and compares that figure with 1,000 UV light hours described on its page as an industry-standard figure. Both numbers are KETTLER’s stated figures; the available information does not independently verify the test or make either number a universal standard. Use the comparison to ask better questions, not to predict a precise service life.

Choose cushion fabric independently of the frame
Keep cushions out of any “year-round” assumption unless their own fabric and fill instructions allow it. KETTLER explicitly excludes cushions from the year-round outdoor statement for its wicker products. A frame may shed rain while a cushion retains water, develops mildew odor, fades, or suffers seam damage.
Look for specific fabric attributes
- Fiber and dye method: NewAge Products describes solution-dyed acrylic as colored throughout the fiber and says its outdoor cushion fabric is selected for weather resistance and color fastness. Confirm that the fabric on the model you are buying is the same construction.
- UV and fade language: KETTLER describes its Sunbrella cushion fabrics as UV protective and resistant to fading and stains. This is a product and fabric claim, not evidence that every cushion sold with every outdoor frame has those properties.
- Moisture behavior: Ask whether the cover is water-repellent, water-resistant, or merely quick-drying, and whether the cushion should be stood on edge after rain.
- Cleaning: Request the permitted soap, brush, rinse pressure, drying method, and stain-treatment limits. Fabric care can be stricter than frame care.
- Replacement: Verify whether covers, foam, and inserts are available separately. A replaceable cushion can change the long-term maintenance decision even when the frame is identical.
Open the cushion specification rather than relying on a photograph or the phrase “outdoor fabric.” Coverage, seam construction, and the maker’s drying instructions matter as much as the fiber name.
Match protection to your climate and exposure
Weather is not one condition. A shaded, dry balcony and an uncovered coastal deck impose different demands. Use the most severe regular exposure—not the average forecast—to set your care plan.
| Exposure | Selection priorities | Protection routine |
|---|---|---|
| Strong, uninterrupted sun | Require a stated UV or fade claim for the exposed material and cushion fabric. Ask whether the claim is a measured rating, a test description, or general marketing language. | Rotate cushions and movable pieces when practical, keep fabric clean, and use shade or a fitted cover when the furniture is not in use. |
| Frequent rain or humid conditions | Check drainage, drying instructions, cushion storage, and the finish’s approved cleaners. Avoid assuming a water-resistant cover means the item can remain wet underneath. | Remove standing water, allow cushions to dry fully, and follow the maker’s cleaning intervals rather than sealing damp pieces under a cover. |
| Coastal or salty air | Ask about fasteners, joints, finish care, and corrosion coverage. Bernhardt recommends weekly rinsing of its all-weather wicker in salty environments. | Rinse on the stated schedule, use mild soap and a soft brush or cloth when needed, and store indoors or cover the furniture during inclement weather as Bernhardt advises for its products. |
| Freezing winters or large temperature swings | Confirm the exact model’s temperature guidance, warranty, and whether cushions, glass, and moving parts have separate limits. Gloster’s -20°C to +55°C (-4°F to 131°F) range applies to its stated woven products. | Follow the manufacturer’s seasonal storage direction. Never transfer one product’s temperature range to another brand or material. |
| Wind, dust, or airborne debris | Prioritize stable geometry, secure placement, drainable covers, and finishes that tolerate the prescribed cleaning method. | Remove debris with a vacuum or soft brush before wiping, as KETTLER recommends for its wicker, and inspect joints after storms. |
Use this buying process before you pay
- Map the exposure. Note which hours receive direct sun, whether rain reaches the furniture, how close the site is to salt water or a pool, and where pieces can be stored. Include winter temperatures and prevailing wind.
- List every component. Write down the frame material, finish, exposed weave or tabletop, cushion cover fabric, insert, fasteners, feet, and any glass or moving hardware. If a listing omits one, mark it as unknown.
- Demand model-specific documentation. Download the care sheet, warranty, and technical description for the exact model. A company-wide materials page cannot substitute for a product-specific exposure statement.
- Separate claims from measurements. Record whether a statement is a general adjective such as “all-weather,” a stated temperature range, a UV light-hour figure, or a cleaning instruction. Keep the qualification attached to the claim.
- Check the cushion exception. Determine whether cushions may remain outside, must be covered, or must be stored indoors. Confirm how quickly they should be dried after rain.
- Test the maintenance plan. Make sure you can provide the required brush, mild soap, rinse access, storage space, and drying time. A theoretically durable product is a poor choice if its care routine is impractical at your home.
- Ask about replacement and warranty. Get written answers about fabric, weave, finish, fasteners, and foam. Ask whether coastal salt, freeze-thaw cycles, or severe weather are excluded.
- Plan storm protection. If the maker recommends indoor storage or a cover, measure the assembled furniture and select a breathable, correctly fitted cover. Confirm that the cover itself has care instructions and does not trap moisture.
- Inspect on delivery. Check coating continuity, welds, weave tension, drainage, zipper function, and cushion seams before the return period ends. Photograph any defect and keep the model and batch information.
Read durability claims without overinterpreting them
Marketing language becomes useful only when its scope is clear. “Weatherproof,” “UV resistant,” and “all-weather” should lead to follow-up questions, not an assumption of zero maintenance.
| Claim type | How to interpret it | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Weatherproof or all-weather | A manufacturer’s description of a particular construction under its stated conditions. | Does it include cushions, and what temperatures, cleaners, and storage practices apply? |
| UV-resistant light hours | A numerical figure tied to the maker’s own test or comparison. KETTLER states 2,000 hours for its wicker versus 1,000 hours it calls an industry-standard figure. | What test method and product component does the figure cover, and is it independently verified? |
| Color fastness | An indication that the specified fabric is designed to retain color under described exposure. | Is the statement for solution-dyed fiber, the finished cover, or the complete cushion assembly? |
| Temperature range | A product-specific operating or exposure range. Gloster gives -20°C to +55°C (-4°F to 131°F) for its described woven pieces. | Does the range apply during use, storage, or both, and are cushions and finishes covered separately? |
| Outdoor-rated frame | A broad category that does not identify the coating, joints, fasteners, or cushion behavior. | Which finish and hardware are used, and what is the required cleaning and inspection schedule? |
Independent comparative durability testing was not identified for these materials. Do not convert a manufacturer’s claim into a cross-brand ranking or a guaranteed lifespan.
Follow a care routine that protects the finish and fabric
Routine cleaning
For the polyethylene wicker described by KETTLER, remove loose debris with a vacuum or soft brush, wipe with a damp cloth, and rinse with a medium-setting hose. The company recommends mild soap and warns against high-power washers, bleach, and abrasive cleaners. Bernhardt likewise recommends mild soap and water with a soft brush or cloth for its all-weather wicker. These instructions are examples for those products; use the exact manual for another maker.

After rain
Clear leaves and grit before they grind against the finish. Remove standing water, open or separate cushions as the instructions permit, and let fabric dry completely before covering or storing it. Do not assume a cover improves a damp cushion; trapped moisture can make drying slower.
During salt exposure
Salt deposits should be rinsed rather than allowed to accumulate. Bernhardt’s guidance calls for weekly rinsing of its all-weather wicker in salty environments. Use that as a product-specific benchmark and confirm the appropriate schedule for your own furniture, especially where wind-driven spray is frequent.
Before severe weather
Follow the maker’s direction on indoor storage or covering. Bernhardt recommends indoor storage or a furniture cover during inclement weather for its all-weather wicker. A cover should fit the assembled piece, allow appropriate ventilation, and be used only after the furniture is clean and dry. Secure loose components according to the manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming a cover alone prevents movement.
Recognize common failure modes and correct them
Fading or chalky surfaces
Possible causes include direct UV exposure beyond the product’s stated conditions, incompatible cleaners, or a finish that was never intended for full-time exposure. Stop abrasive cleaning, photograph the affected area, and compare the care sheet with your routine. Ask the maker whether the finish or fabric is replaceable and whether the warranty covers the observed condition.
Mildew odor or persistently damp cushions
Separate the cushion from the frame, remove the cover only as the care instructions allow, and dry it completely in a ventilated place. Check whether the fabric is water-resistant or merely quick-drying and whether the insert can be removed. If the odor returns, request the manufacturer’s approved cleaning method instead of applying bleach or a high-pressure rinse.
Loose or frayed weave
Do not pull individual strands or cut the damaged section. Document the location, inspect the underlying frame for movement, and ask whether the maker offers a repair kit or service. A loose weave can expose the frame and worsen when scrubbed aggressively.

Rust-colored marks or corrosion at joints
Rinse away salt and dirt, then follow the approved cleaner and touch-up procedure. Record the fastener type and the environment, because coastal exposure or trapped moisture may affect warranty coverage. Do not substitute a household rust remover unless the product instructions specifically permit it.

Build a specification you can compare across products
Before comparing prices or styles, put the requirements in writing. A short specification makes omissions visible and lets you compare like with like.
- Frame: material, coating or finish, joint construction, hardware, feet, and drainage.
- Exposed material: exact fiber or species, weave or panel construction, UV statement, and temperature statement.
- Cushions: cover fiber, dye method, UV and fade language, water behavior, insert type, zipper, cleaning method, and replacement availability.
- Exposure: direct-sun hours, rainfall, humidity, salt, freezing temperatures, wind, and airborne debris.
- Maintenance: approved soap, brush, hose pressure, rinse frequency, drying method, and prohibited chemicals.
- Protection: whether cushions or the complete piece must be covered or stored during storms and winter.
- Evidence: model-specific manual, warranty exclusions, test or rating qualifications, and date of the documents.
When two products meet the same functional need, choose the one with clearer documentation and a care routine you can follow consistently. Better evidence is more useful than a vague superlative.
Questions to settle with the seller or manufacturer
Send the following questions before ordering if the listing does not answer them:
- What exact material and finish are used on the frame, and are the joints welded, fastened, or both?
- Is the exposed weave polyethylene, another synthetic, or natural fiber?
- Does the outdoor claim include cushions, covers, and inserts?
- What UV test, light-hour figure, or color-fastness statement applies to this model?
- What is the permitted cleaner, brush, hose pressure, and rinse frequency?
- What temperature range and storage conditions are specified?
- What changes for coastal salt, pool chemicals, or freeze-thaw conditions?
- Are replacement covers, cushions, feet, fasteners, or weave-repair parts available?
- Which conditions void the warranty, and how should a claim be documented?
Written answers tied to the model are more dependable than a salesperson’s general assurance that a collection is “made for outdoors.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Can cushions stay outside if the frame is rated for year-round use?
Not automatically. KETTLER’s year-round statement for its described wicker excludes cushions. Check the cushion fabric, insert, drying instructions, and storage requirement separately.
Is a higher UV-hour number proof that one furniture set will last longer?
No. KETTLER reports 2,000 UV-resistant light hours for its wicker and compares that with 1,000 industry-standard hours, but those are the manufacturer’s figures and are not independent, universal lifespan measurements.
How often should coastal furniture be rinsed?
Bernhardt recommends weekly rinsing for its all-weather wicker in salty environments. Confirm the schedule for your exact product and exposure rather than applying it universally.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

No. The furniture should be clean and dry before covering, and the cover must fit and ventilate correctly. Bernhardt recommends indoor storage or a cover during inclement weather for its specified wicker products.
What should I request for a patio with freezing winters?
Ask for the exact model’s temperature range, winter-storage instructions, warranty exclusions, and separate limits for cushions, glass, finishes, and moving parts. Gloster’s stated -20°C to +55°C (-4°F to 131°F) range applies only to its described woven pieces.
