For most indoor home projects, compare Bosch laser measures in the 135–165 ft range and choose by the features you will actually use: area and volume calculations for room planning, memory or Bluetooth for recording readings, and indirect measurement for awkward sightlines. For long distances or sunlit targets, consider a 400 ft model with a digital viewfinder. Bosch’s US lineup spans 100–400 ft, but maximum range is a specification under stated conditions—not a guarantee for every surface or lighting situation.
How to narrow down your choice
- Estimate your longest measurement. Typical room dimensions and furniture layouts point toward a 135–165 ft model. Consider a longer-range model only if your work regularly calls for it; range alone does not solve aiming problems in bright light.
- Choose the calculations and functions you need. Area and volume support room and material planning. Indirect measurement can help when you cannot take a straight shot, while an inclinometer enables angle-related functions.
- Decide how you will record readings. On-tool memory is useful when surveying several rooms; Bluetooth and Bosch’s MeasureOn app support a connected documentation workflow on selected models.
- Check the work environment. A digital viewfinder can help locate a laser spot in sunlit conditions. For dusty or wet areas, compare the exact model’s IP rating and consult its manual; an IP rating does not make the tool waterproof.
- Confirm power and package details. Battery type and included items vary by model and listing, so check the exact SKU before buying.
Compare Bosch models by features
The following are Bosch-stated specifications and features, not independent comparative test results. The stated range and accuracy should be checked against the exact model manual and its measurement conditions.

Bosch says the GLM165-27CGL green beam can be up to four times brighter than standard red beams. That is a manufacturer claim about beam brightness, not a guarantee of visibility in every setting. Bosch describes the GLM400C digital viewfinder as helping locate the laser spot in sunlit conditions.
Which features matter for home projects?
Room dimensions, layouts and estimates
For measuring walls, floors or furniture clearances, start with a model whose range comfortably covers your longest expected room-scale measurement. Area calculation can help with floors or walls; volume can help when you need a cubic estimate. Bosch lists these functions on the GLM 42 and GLM165-22. A laser measure provides dimensions, but it does not replace checking site conditions or material requirements when preparing a renovation estimate.

Repeated surveys and keeping readings
If you are measuring several rooms or need to revisit readings, memory can reduce reliance on notes taken during the survey. Bosch lists capacity for 20 readings on the GLM 42 and 50 on the GLM400C. The GLM 50 C, GLM165-27CGL and GLM400C list Bluetooth and MeasureOn app support. Confirm that the app workflow suits the way you plan to organize and share measurements.
Obstructed sightlines and angles
When a direct measurement is blocked, indirect functions can help derive a distance from other measurements. The GLM 42 lists indirect functions; the GLM 50 C adds an inclinometer and angle-related functions, including double-indirect measurement. These functions require correct setup and aiming, so follow the relevant model’s manual for the method and conditions.

Outdoor work and visibility
Maximum range and ease of seeing or aiming at the laser spot are separate considerations. Bosch positions the GLM400C’s digital viewfinder for finding the spot in sunlit conditions, alongside its 400 ft stated range. Do not assume the maximum range will be usable on every target outdoors: target reflectivity and ambient light affect working range.
Dust, moisture and power
The listed protection ratings vary: Bosch specifies IP54 for the GLM165-40 and IP65 for the GLM165-22 and GLM165-27CGL. Treat these as model-specific ratings, not a claim that any unit is waterproof. Battery arrangements also differ: the GLM165-40 uses two AAA batteries, the GLM400C uses three AA batteries, and the GLM165-27CGL includes a 3.7 V lithium-ion battery. Check the product listing for what is included with the exact model and package.

What range and accuracy figures mean
Range is a limit under specified conditions, not a promise that the tool will measure that far against every surface. Bosch’s GLM 10 manual explains that working range depends on target reflectivity and ambient light: favorable light and a more reflective target can extend usable range, while extreme interior illumination or a poorly reflecting surface can reduce it. The manual also notes that unfavorable conditions can increase maximum deviation.
For the models compared here, Bosch lists typical accuracy of ±1/16 in for the GLM 42, GLM 50 C, GLM165-40, GLM165-22, GLM165-27CGL and GLM400C. The GLM 10 manual lists ±1/8 in typical accuracy and a typical range of 6 in–35 ft. Bosch manuals list typical ranges of 6 in–135 ft for the GLM 42 and 6 in–165 ft for the GLM 50 C. These figures are model-specific; consult the exact manual for the applicable measurement conditions. Bosch says its laser measures are certified to ISO 16331-1 for accuracy and range claims on relevant product pages.

For important dimensions, take more than one reading and cross-check critical cuts or installations with an appropriate reference method. This is practical jobsite guidance, not a manufacturer test result.
